Candy Kramer @ the Obert

confluence.jpg Don’t miss Candy Kramer’s exhibit entitled ‘Confluence’ at the Obert Contemporary at Melrose Arch from the 28 March 2008. In her first solo exhibition Candy Kramer explores her identity as a South African with Eastern European heritage. With the passing of decades and the migration between continents, Kramer is moved to ask the questions: how does one transmit immutable deep-rooted values while adapting to a new, fast changing world? Which of those values are malleable and which ones remain immutable? The themes of the passing of time, the fusing of old and new and the erosion and transmission of memories and values infuse the works on show.

Kramer’s method includes both the traditional medium of oil on canvas and, more significantly, the rusting process of steel. by taking steel, something so solid, dense, strong and uniform in nature, and immersing it in water (to which it reacts by eroding all but the indelible image) the artist conceptually expresses her curiosity with degeneration and regeneration. The rusting process allows the essential portrait to emerge – the outcome of this technique, seen in these vibrant works, hints at the answers to Kramer’s questions: what has remained intact from the original? what has been eroded and what has evolved?
