Friday playlist: Albums we love

Artist: Trey Songz Album: T R I G G A In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment about the album, Trey Songz said “It’s my every emotion at this point in my life, it’s the good, the bad, the ugly, it’s the beautiful, its last night, its love, it’s hard-hitting beats, but beautiful keys. Its beautiful melodies, it’s so personal to me as well, of course I have songs that are impersonal, that are fun records that just want to get people to move and dance, but as you get to the depths and the layers of the album. We live in the days where people want to hear about the flaws and not perfections. The best albums happen to be the ones with strong lyrical content. The 17 track project is a blend of hip-hop and R&B, something that he’s successfully done well in the past. But what’s a Trey Songz album without them girls? Aha, same formula but that’s what works for him. Stand out tracks from the album are “Disrespectful” and “SmartPhones,” as well as “All We Do” and “Y.A.S. vocally, and production wise, Trigga is a solid commercial album. Some good turn up tunes you can enjoy from the album. In case you didn’t know, Kelis is a chef, maybe that’s what also influenced the album title and tracklist? It’s always cute when artists feature their children in their songs, we’ve seen Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Coldplay’s “Chris Martin” do it too. The album’s opening track “Breakfast” is introduced by Kelis’ four-year-old son Knight Jones, who speaks the monologue; “Hey guys! Are you hungry? My mom made food. The first track is catchy which makes you want to listen to the album to see it will be consistent throughout. Kelis’ husky voice is still the one to reckon with, with this album she delivered a plate full of soulfood for the soul. It’s kind of hard to box the album into one genre, or maybe it doesn’t need to be boxed at all and it should just be. Very strong vocals, vulnerable, soulful, honest. Just the way you always loved Kelis. Kudos to her for the amazing album. Get the album here:...

Thatch Music secures the prestigious tender for the SABC’s X-Factor reality series brand

Local music production company Thatch Music recently celebrated yet another major success, securing the prestigious tender for the SABC’s X-Factor reality series brand. The company, founded in 2009, has been the force behind some of the countries biggest musical productions to date and therefore was the natural choice for the reality show’s musical production. Working behind the scenes to ensure the success of some of South Africa’s most incredible live events in recent years, Thatch Music founder, owner and musical director James Bassingthwaighte is passionate about producing the best events possible. “I would like to be able to compete with international live broadcasts in terms of production quality. I know that South African viewers are looking for that kind of quality, especially now that so much international content is available and often goes viral.  It’s important to me to be part of an industry that’s competing internationally on both musical and technical levels”, he explains. Aside from interfacing with judges, record companies and the production team in terms of song selection, Thatch Music’s mandate for X Factor was to bring sexier and younger content to the shows. To that end, many of the Thatch musicians and producers actually perform and produce on each track, also ensuring that each track is immediately ready for download on itunes.  From a musical perspective, there is nothing the company is not responsible for – and that’s even before the live broadcast takes place. “Its so refreshing working on the X-Factor as they are placing a lot of creative faith in us.  It’s going to be an awesome first season and the audiences should go beserk for it”, Bassingthwaighte adds. Bassingthwaighte believes that 2014 was a huge turning point for the talented crew at Thatch Music.  The company has grown in leaps and bounds and has turned out phenomenally successful productions, from both a musical direction and live television broadcast perspective. Bassingthwaighte has surrounded himself with like-minded vocal coaches, musicians and producers, keeping the Thatch Music working ethic at the high standard he has always dreamed of. Respected by their peers and musicians alike, Thatch Music is fast becoming the countries most sought-after music production and live broadcast company....

Curator, director and choreographer Jay Pather, Grahamstown-based dancer Nomcebisi Moyikwa, human rights activist and performer Siphumeze Kunday, poet, writer and the Mail and Guardian 200 Young South Africans (2013) recipientGenna Gardini, and co-founder and artistic director of the Mothertongue Project Sara Matchett will sit down with attendees before the performances to give their insight on performance art as well as framing the performances featured on stage that evening. After the discussion, a series of international artists will explore femininity through dance, scripted narration, graphic design, photography, video and song. Grahamstown- based Nomcebisi Moyikwa, and fellow performers Maipelo Gabang andNtombizandile Nonyathi , push the boundaries of contemporary dance through their act ,Caught, which follows two women caught in a half room with a single bulb as their only source of light. Following its run at the 2013 SPILL Festival (UK) reviewer Dora Mortimer described UK artist Season Butler’s “Woman who walks on knives” as “creating a cobweb-fine balance of danger and seduction and raises interesting questions about the nature of sacrifice in art.” Nigerian-American artist Wura-Natasha Ogunji will collaborate with South African women for a stirring site-specific endurance performance called “Can’t I just decide to fly?” Artistic trio from the Mothertongue Project, Sara Matchett,Genna Gardini and Siphumeze Kundayi, will present The Walk: South Africa which was inspired by India’s Maya Krishna Rao.
