CALL RYAN … I MEAN JOHN… I MEAN REG

You can’t slip anything past Willy’s beady eye… thanks for the cool post Willy – NIce revenge tactic! So there’s this billboard at the corner of Hans Strijdom & Lyn just South of the N1 turnoff in Randburg… THIS IS RYAN, He’s 31. For fun call… So I called Ryan, and after wishing him a happy birthday, I asked him how his day has been…. He said that he had received about 200 calls, 80 SMSs and a handfull of offers from women for intimate visits (and perhaps from some guys too, but he was not saying). I offered to help him get back at his boss, Reg, who is responsible for the billboard ad. What you do, I said, is everytime someone calls you, you ask them to make just one more call. Get them to call Reg’s number and ask to speak to John, and act surprised and bemused that it is not John answering. Then ask if it is possible to leave a message for John. In a few day’s time, get a buddy to call Reg and say “Hi, this is John. Are there any messages for me?” Of course there are also accomplices to take care of like the secretary, co-workers, etc…We’ll get to them later....

NOLLYWOOD DREAMS – Nigeria on Special A

NEXT WEEK TUESDAY the 29th March (not tonight) Special Assignment takes you on a journey to the fascinating and sometimes bizarre world of Nollywood – Nigeria’s film industry. Nollywood is now the third biggest movie industry in the world after Hollywood and India’s Bollywood. Nollywood releases almost a thousand movies every year ONGand in Lagos alone, there are 5 000 registered actors. Yet, there are no movie houses in Nigeria. Nollywood caters for the home video market – and in this country of 120 million people there are 70 million video recorders and DVD players. “Nollywood Dreams” also tells how Special Assignment’s executive producer, Jacques Pauw, became an instant Nollywood movie star! While Special Assignment was filming a 17th century Igbo epic in a small village in eastern Nigeria, the young female director/producer suddenly “discovered” that she needed a white man to play the role of a colonial priest who brings Christianity to the king and his followers. She pleaded with Jacques and said it would involve only one scene and one line. He agreed – and was given a tight-fitting white robe to wear. But what was supposed to be a single scene turned into a major role in the movie. Jacques acted non-stop for two days, converting the king, preaching to the locals and trying to save the lives of twin babies who were about to be sacrificed by an evil priest. He even appears on the poster promoting the movie. 🙂 Besides spending almost a week on set in Enugu, Special Assignment also visited Nollywood in Lagos. They interviewed and filmed two of the biggest stars in the industry and spoke to various producers and directors. They also ventured into the film market in central Lagos where millions of copies of movies are sold by hundreds of merchants. In that week alone, 56 new movies were released! Virtually an entire suburb of Lagos – Surelere – has been taken over by Nollywood and this is where actors, actresses, directors, producers and of course movie-hopefuls gather. Nollywood movies mostly take a few days to shoot, on a shoestring budget and on very basic equipment. Yet, a blockbuster can sell up to 200 000 copies. The movies are sometimes violent and issues like vampirism, witchcraft, love, hate and betrayal are often the central themes. Strict censorship rules however ensure that love scenes are limited to light kissing and issues of religious conflict are taboo. In a country better known for drug dealing, 419 scams and corruption, “Nollywood Dreams” gives a unique insight into an incredibly vibrant, creative and innovative industry. “Nollywood Dreams” is directed by Jacques Pauw and...

ONE night MEAT Stand in SELBY

So has anyone heard of the trend overseas where shops are opened for a night or a weekend or one week only and then silently and slickly dissapear??? Its a worldwide phenomenon known as POP UP RETAIL – kinda like a chic mysterious fleamarket. Except that if you miss it you may never catch it again. Well we are VERY pleased to announce that some trendy young Jo…burgers have their eye on worldwide trends and have set up a POP UP ART GALLERY – it’s happening this week in the new hip Urban regeneration suburb SELBY (always head for the TopStar drive in its not far) on Friday night (the 1st April) so make sure to BE THERE. If you’re an artist and you’d like the chance to flog your stuff – it’s too late for this shindig – but you can always try your luck – number below. Here’s the 411: A group of people from the Ad industry decided to put together a non–profit nomadic exhibition for any artists out there that would like to put their work on display. This time round the theme is MEAT – it’s a ONE NIGHT AFFAIR and it’t taking place this Friday night. The way it works is that you join the email list – then you get sent an email that tells you about the next Exhibitions theme and entry requirements – you then get creative and do it. They (the innovative Ad peeps) then curate the work that is sent in and decide who makes it in… The one night stand nomadic event then takes place – with usually about 300 – 400 people attending – completely wack off the wall DJs setting the tone and a well-stocked bar – you can also buy any of the Art on display (thats not sold already!) You shake your touche till the early hours and go home inspired to send something in next time. By the way there is no COUVERT CHARGE. Its Free. What we at REPRESENT love about these doo’s are the fact that they are using new, sometimes undiscovered non-gallery spaces that turn the whole concept of ‘Art Gallery’ on its head and translate into an Urban experience… By the way – its too late for many of us non-artists to get it together – but there’s a t-shirt exhibition in two months time so get going and design… Call Jonathan on 083.628.5159 or MEAT It’s a little hard to read the flyer so here goes: MEAT Friday 1st April 18h30 38 Roger st Cnr Webber st SELBY No Couvert Charge Directions: Take M1 South Keep left...
