The possibilities that Designer burgers bring

By Khumo Ntoane I’ll try anything once. This philosophy has gotten me into some trouble a few times and it’s also taken me to unbelievable places. I mean, I accidentally ate dog meat once and didn’t even flinch when I found out, because my taste buds were not reacting to my brain’s reprimanding scold. (Dog meat is a delicacy in South Korea before you start jumping and thinking I’m a terrible human being). I’m going to make a confession, I recently introduced red meat back into my diet because I had it in me that the lentils and other form of none animal protein wasn’t enough to supplement my protein intake and I was constantly fatigued for the last 6 months of being a vegetarian. The mushroom burgers have always been my favourite and I love the creativity that non meat eaters apply to their food consumption but there is nothing like having a ‘real’ burger. I went to Craft Burger, a new-ish burger joint on Sea Point main road.  It’s not simply eating any commercial burger packaged for the masses. You sit down and get a piece of paper and design your own burger. This being the design capital of SA Craft Burger serves as one of chestnuts that make it such. Other than all that ladidaah daah speak, go have yourself a mouth-watering burger at a really relaxed and pleasant space. The place is intimate with a few tables. You have the option of choosing how you want your burger to be done; rare, medium rare or well done. There is also an assortment of cheeses to choose from. The whole menu gives you options because you design your own burger. The guys that work there are very friendly and you can get free wifi. I always mix and match when I go there, why have the same things when you have options? 10 Reasons To Watch The Movie, iNumber Number.

10 Reasons To Watch The Movie, iNumber Number.

Thina jumped at the opportunity to go watch the new film, iNumber Number. Upon her return, she was more than convince everyone in the office has to go see it. To help us all understand her reasons – why should we all go watch it – she gives us the 10 reasons why inumber-number i-rokha! 1. It’s WOW!: I don’t dish out compliments all willy-nilly & my vocab is by no means limited, but for some reason if I had to describe my reaction to Inamba Namba in two words, it would be – in the famous words of a former colleague – “JUST WOOOOOW!” 2. You WANT to see it: I’m one of those people who (mostly) watches S.A films out of an ag-shame responsibility to support local art. I think that’s the attitude I had when I walked into the theatre. Imagine my surprise when I found myself having the rollercoaster ride of my life enjoying the action packed film. 3. It’s nothing like I’VE ever seen locally: I don’t claim to have seen every South African film, but I don’t think I’m off the mark when I say a bulk of our productions are based on the struggle, apartheid, the atrocities of the past, sadness & tears. As important as I feel these films are, I also feel that there is more to our country & to our stories. 4. It doesn’t take itself too seriously: The self-deprecation in the script had the crowd in stitches. I can’t reveal what it was about, but all I can say is if you were an avid old-school Backstage fan, you’ll know what I’m on about. 5. You will LOOOVE the cast: Literally, as each cast member appeared, there was hooting & hollering. The enthusiastic First Wednesdays Club crowd at Atlas studios, where the movie premiered, couldn’t contain their excitement. 6. Eye candy for the ladies: The ‘starring’ Sdumo Mtshali … ooooooh … is it appropriate to say ‘he can get it’ on this platform? lol 7. Already has a nod from Universal Studios for a remake in the States: Not that we need American approval, but those Americans ‘have been having it’ (they’ve been doing this for a while), so an acknowledgement from them is a very good look. 8. Vernac all the way: Initially I thought the style of creating movies in local languages was a fad. I’m glad to see that it has endured. Inamba namba reps street languages from all over & the result is an authentic, raw & real script that makes you feel like “maaan! those people are speaking my taal ek se.”...

African Metropolis Short Films to Premiere in Europe and USA

Directing talents from six African countries invited to festivals in Rotterdam and Santa Barbara African Metropolis premieres in Europe on 26 January 2014 at the renowned International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). On top of that, the short film programme revisits North America in February for their USA premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in California. The compilation of six short fiction films, set in six major African cities, tells urban tales about life in African metropolises. Besides the screenings and a panel discussion in Rotterdam, Marie KA, one of the African Metropolis directors, will talk about her experiences at Berlinale Talents 2014, the Berlin International Film Festival‘s annual platform for the most promising emerging filmmakers. The African Metropolis Short Film Project is an initiative of the Goethe-Institut South Africa and South African executive producer Steven Markovitz, with support from Guaranty Trust Bank and the Hubert Bals Fund of International Film Festival Rotterdam. With short films set in Lagos (Director: Folasakin Iwajomo), Abidjan (Philippe Lacôte), Dakar (Marie KA), Johannesburg (Vincent Moloi), Cairo (Ahmed Ghoneimy) and Nairobi (Jim Chuchu), the filmmakers’ work shows the face of a modern and cosmopolitan Africa and challenges long-standing clichés about the continent. Gertjan Zuilhof, International Programmer and Peter van Hoof, Head of Short Film Programme of IFFR, say: “Big city films from African big cities is just what we have been waiting for. It is about time we move on from pre-colonial nostalgia. The best would be if this project could work as a model for the future.” www.africanmetropolis.com Facebook: AfricanMetropolis Twitter: @Africanmet Dates: International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR): 26.01.2014: – Boost! coproduction workshop with Steven Markovitz – Premiere Screening, followed by a panel discussion – Party hosted by African Metropolis and Boost! A nod from the Bookmarks Awards for REDD’S Africa.

When SoulProviders launched as a Content and Digital agency they couldn’t have foreseen what the future held a mere two years down the line. The big dreams and consistent hard work have culminated in recognition by the Digital industry’s most prestigious awards. SoulProviders is proud to announce that one of their online flagship brands REDD’S Africa, under their Africa Desk division, has been nominated in this year’s Bookmarks Awards in theBest brand/company category. REDD’S Africa client Langa Khanyile – Category Expansion Manager – AFB’s & Spirits, SABMiller Africa – had this to say about working with the agency SoulProviders. “When I challenged the SoulProviders team to reach 100k FB fans by the end of F14 it was an audacious goal that I considered to be unachievable by most.  As it stands, not only are we fast becoming the biggest REDD’S community in the world, in one month, we were able to interact with 1 million consumers across the continent; more remarkable is the high engagement levels you will see on our page vs peer pages – which speaks to the relevancy and resonance of the content that is posted by the SoulProviders team –they just get our consumers, more than this, they are able to get them to go into outlets and purchase REDD’S by letting them know where it is available in their neighborhoods – no billboard can do that for you.  Our unified vision is  “one Redd’s, one Africa, one million hectolitres” – digital remains a key part of ensuring this vision is realised. All the markets where digital is employed have posteddoubledigitgrowth” The Chief-Firestarter of SoulProviders,Sarah-Jane Bodenhad this to add,“Really chuffed that REDD’S Africa is our first ever Bookmarks shortlist, it’s a passion project for us, where we have bravely ventured with our client into new territories, doing our best to bring an authenticity to pan-African storytelling on behalf of an exciting brand.  We’re delighted the judges gave a nod to our efforts. We’re a small content and digital agency and being up there with all the legendary big guys is a big compliment for us. Represent!” This article wouldn’t be complete without hearing from Thina Mazulu who said “We’re so thrilled about the nomination & would like to raise our REDD’S ( 🙂 I couldn’t resist) to the Bookmarks judges for the vote of confidence. We’d also like to extend a big thank you to our clients for trusting us with sharing the brand with the continent. Holding thumbs for that award” Here’s to work with soul. Cheers. A special “Thank You” goes to all the  REDD’S Africa team members. Looking forward to seeing this brand soar to greater heights: Kenya:...
