Represent Review: Niemand/Lonehill Estate

Representah John went to check out Niemand and Lonehill Estate at Carnival City – the bottom line is the same old story guys, we need to support our hard-working and superbly talented artists more – let’s get behind them and attend as many shows as we can.  This is what Represent is all about so let’s Represent!  Here’s Johns words, Sharpile!: I don’t know what the issue is, marketing, the fans or winter? Twice I’ve gone to see a show at Carnival City, first the Carnival Pops, and now the Niemand show – and both times the venue was almost empty. I really feel for the excellent performers on stage having to play to almost empty halls. Friday night’s show by Niemand really lived up to it’s name as almost no one pitched to see the show. That said, the show was brilliant. Niemand is one of the best acts I’ve ever seen on the local scene and were it not for the awkward seating arrangements, we would have been dancing and rocking violently. They delivered what I expected and more. The highlight of the show though, was the opening act – Lonehill Estate. Wow ! These young guys are playing at a level only seen in seasoned performers. Why they opened for Niemand is beyond me because they deserve their own show. The front man Nathan Ro has an incredible voice and it helps that he is a born performer. He presented the songs in a funny, sometimes sad and always most entertaining manner. He has the charisma of a dictator on stage yet will stun you when he and the band do an ad-libbed song, with words and themes  – including musical keys – from the audience. He is a REAL “Soutie” and yet he enthralled the small crowd with his take of an Afrikaans song. The rest of the band, The President (well deserved name) and Sunshine D,  is VERY capable but the base player, Gabriel Craig,  stunned us. The guy is so versatile – after playing base for a few songs he switched to piano, penny whistle and the flute.  Wow – what a talent! The show gets full marks – it’s entertaining – a bit loud so leave the old folks at home – and tickled our feet which left us wanting for space to dance. Come on everyone! This kind of talent deserves better support all...

Represent Competition: Win with DORP!

Many old faithful SA rockers will remember DORP the band that rocked our world’s mid to late 90’s.   We have to give a massive big ups to these guys for never giving up – seems like their time is now as their single “London out there” (video) gathers some traction in the UK where they are now based.  They’re bringing it home in August and we have an awesome prize for a lucky Representah to celebrate their return: a Dorp goodiebag filled with: Limited edition CD single, 2 different limited edition vinyls, Dorp Sticker, T shirt and 2 tickets into a dorp show on their tour to SA… Awesome hey? Simply read the article below, email editor@represent.co.za with your name, age and cell number and answer the question: “What is the name of the brand new DORP single ?” (Clue: they’re coming to shoot the video here.)  Read all about their backstory below. Following on from their hugely successful SA tour in December 2006 and the incredible response from radio to their previous single, “London Out There”, Dorp return to South Africa in August of this year for 8 date tour and video shoot AND to release their latest single , “Simon Says’. “As Kevin and I are from SA, we always like to return as much as we can,” commented lead singer Piet Bez, “But nowadays its also a business pleasure. We are so pleased that the South African music public has taken to our new music so well, and its great to play to a home town crowd. The best part is that our French DJ and English drummer also absolutely love it!” The tour stretches from Oppikoppi in the North, to Cape Town, back to Durban and returns to Johannesburg before August is out. The band will also be taking time out to shoot a new music video and the public is warned to listen out for the new single, Simon Says from their forthcoming album, on radio stations countrywide. Fall Out Boy support bands announced

Rockers, you’re in for another treat – 94.7 are bringing Fall Out Boy to South Africa in July and they’ll be supported by some of our top rock/indie bands FEVERTREE, J, LOVE JONES and HARRIS TWEED: We’ve waited in anticipation for details of the local line-up, and now The 94.7 TOP 8 @ 8 are thrilled to announce that joining headlining band FALL OUT BOY, are local favourites FEVERTREE, J, LOVE JONES, and HARRIS TWEED. It’s going to be a BIG NITE OUT, on the 20th of July at Joburg’s Coca-Cola Dome! FALL OUT BOY are climbing the ranks on 94.7’s Top 8@8, with their new single, “Thank You for the Memories”, following in the footsteps of “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race”, which reached the No.1 position. The American rockers have constructed a distinctive sound, combining darkly comical lyricism, soulful voices, and a backdrop of pop, punk, and hardcore. “No frills” rock with choruses that stick and lines that fans tattoo on their bodies. It is only fitting that the hottest South African talent share the bill… FEVERTREE are famed for their raw live performances, their gritty, uplifting rock-pop sound, and powerful ballads. Their debut album, Quest for a Cure, dominated South African radio with five top-ten singles. Along with extensive airplay, the album received rave reviews, and the band was nominated for “Best Adult Contemporary Album” in the 2004 SAMAs. Their latest album, “Under a New Regime”, was released earlier this year to critical acclaim, and a hungry public.  J writes honest pop songs, and then turns them into sprawling Indie masterpieces. He’s only been in South Africa for a year and has already signed record, publishing and management deals, written a host of autobiographical songs, and convinced a respected international producer to record his debut album. Not only does prolific songwriter pen his own songs, he played nearly all of the instruments on the album, and arranged the strings too!   LOVE JONES is a dynamic fusion of the most appealing elements of rock ‘n roll and popular music – raw power prettied up with the glossy overtones of accessible pop. The band formed in 2005, and found themselves rocking up a storm on a cold night at Splashy Fen – their first ever performance. Their self-titled debut album thrilled local fans and enabled the band to compete on an international level, with its first single invading the airwaves countrywide.   Since the release of HARRIS TWEED’s debut album ‘The Younger’, the duo have become one of the most affecting live acts in the country. They’ve performed numerous local gigs, supported Swedish singer-songwriter Jose Gonzalez,...

TICKETS! Rock is back and it’s Black!

*To win a pair of tickets for Friday please email the editor with subject BLK JKS, include your name, age and cell number asap!*  Well that’s what the Weekly Mail said about the dark and deep rockers BLK JKS – see if it’s true this Friday at the Bohemian in Richmond, near Melville (leave all comfort requirements at home).  Last time we saw the dudes in action we were way impressed – I remember thinking “a South African RadioHead” (if that is remotely possible.) We’ve also heard a lot about Desmond and the Tutu’s although the name makes us cringe and certainly a bit skeptical of them.  Wonder what uBabe Tutu thinks?  We just have too much respect to use his name in vain but maybe we’re being old and boring?  Surely there could be better name options – besides the association, it just sounds so corny…and you know Editorista can’t take corn.  We’ll have to check them out and let you know but they’re going to have to persuade us. The BLK JKS – Natalia (Cpt) – Desmond & Tutus @ Bohemians – Friday 8th June The winning combination of The BLK JKS with Desmond & the Tutus is rekindled to heat up the winter night on Friday the 8th June at Bohemians, alongside Natalia the special guest folk /pop singer songwriter from Cape Town. Melville) Entrance: R30 Info: 076-590-0564 or MovementMedia@gmail.com Websites: http://www.thebo.co.za/; – www.myspace.com/BLKJKS – www.rock.co.za/natalia Line Up: BLK JKS – Desmond & the Tutus – Natalia (Cpt) The BLK JKS “Rock is back, and it’s black!” –Weekly Mail.
