The 4U Performance Awards (sponsored by Vodacom 4U and hosted by Atoll Media – publishers of blunt, Zigzag and Saltwater GIRL), were designed to recognise and reward performance and achievement in South African Youth Culture.
The awards were launched in June last year and over an eleven month period, 54 nominees were collected. The list of nominees represented a broad cross section of the subcultures that drive youth culture. These include surfing, skateboarding, inline skating, snowboarding, skydiving, graffiti, street art, fmx, bmx, hip hop, punk, and rock music, wakeboarding, photography, animation and design. The winners were decided by public sms votes and decisions by a panel of judges.
Top SA and international surfer Travis Logie was awarded Male Rider of the Year for walking away with the title at the WQS six star rated Rip Curl Pro held in Hossegor, France. This insane win earned him 2500 points, which qualified him for a position on the 2005 WCT (World Championship Tour). His high level international achievements make him the deserving winner of this category.
Tamarys de Maroussem earned the title of Female Rider of the Year after some insane surfing achievements during the nomination period. Tamarys was nominated when she wowed onlookers with her third consecutive win of the Roxy Wahine cup. She then went on to win the women’s open division of the Gotcha Pro and she also won the ladies open division of the ASP Africa (Association of Surfing Professionals) PST (Professional Surf Tour).
Local freesports photographer Barry Tuck won the Best Artistic Contribution category for extensively documenting the dynamic environment of youth culture over the last year. His body of work nominated included cover shots for blunt and Zigzag magazines, as well as many other insane photos published. His images are one of the main outlets of expression for a culture that redefines its boundaries and questions reality every second of every session. When the trends have changed, the names are only memories and the sessions are long forgotten, Barry’s pictures will still remain.
Big wave surfer Jason Ribbink came up tops in the Most Radical Performance category with his entry of a big wave session in Cape Town last year. The biggest swell to hit Cape Town in three years was rolling in and Jason flew down with photographer Brenton Geach to meet with possibly the biggest waves seen, surfed and captured on film ever in South Africa. The surf was massive, wild and very dangerous, but Jason put his neck on the line anyway. If that isn’t radical, then what is?
Finally, Best Live Music Performance was awarded to Ready D, hip hop scratch DJ. He won the category for his insane live music performance at the Vodacom Beach Africa in July 2004. He presented one of the craziest and most energetic live Hip Hop scratch performances ever seen in Durban. Those who saw it commented that to witness his mastery of mixing was an unforgettable experience. PIC courtest of ý de Kock/Tostee.com.
