Whats up with 46664 in Fancourt?
Last night a few of the gels were throwing back some vino getting all deep n stuff… We started discussing the much publicised 46664 concert that’s to be held at Fancourt on the 19th March and the general feeling is that the venue, the very Exclusive Golfing estate Fancourt, in George, just does not make sense.
What we want to know is why is s…
uch a HUGE concert being held in such a small town, miles away from anywhere – well – about 440kms from Cape Town, 600 kms from East London and 300 kms from PE? Where are all the people going to come from??? Does it mean that only those that can afford to get to George, buy the ticket and pay for accommodation will be able to attend??? A little exclusive indeed!! We are working women and none of us could afford to go… what about those who you’re singing, crying and talking about???
Rumours have it that last years concert (which was a bit boring) ran up a huge loss which may explain the organisers strange choice of location – a business heavywieght, philanthropist Prof. Dr. Hasso Plattner, co-founder and chairman of SAP – has offered to stage the concert and pay for everything himself… He is also the owner of Fancourt… mhhh. The artists are all playing for free… so WHY HOLD IT IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE where only the PRIVELEGED and a few token locals get to attend? Have you seen that part of the country? Beautiful indeed, but VERY NOUVEAU RICHE MONEY and over-the-top wealth…not much transformation going on in that corner as in most of the Cape.
The point of 46664 is to raise money for HIV/AIDS and much of it comes from the concert being beamed out to the world and people then making donations… Our feelings on the matter were that 46664 needs to get closer to the REAL people, those who are affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa – the mostly white crowd at last years concert and the low attendance of community members will probably be predominant at this years 46664 if not worse. There is a ‘patronising tone’ to this event – a real THEM and US – and we really encourage the organisers to downscale the event and bring it down to earth and closer to the masses… Come on guys. Your response and comments much needed on this topic.. thanks!
