We’re not huge rockers though so excuse our ignorance. These are the bands who will represent the creme de la creme of SA rock music at the My Coke Fest this year, Rockers – what are your thoughts? WONDERBOOM
It’s not often a band delivers such unbridled passion, commitment and superlative, original sounds. WONDERBOOM does. They (Cito Otto on vocals, Martin Schofield on guitars, Wade Williams on bass, and Danny De Wet on drums) are one of South Africa’s most established and successful rock bands. During their decade together, they have released 7 albums, headlined every major SA festival and been nominated for 4 SAMA’s. In 2004 they won the local leg of the Global Battle of the Bands, and came second worldwide. ‘City of Gold’, WONDERBOOM’s seventh album, was released last year, and has seen its first single “Best Side” receive extensive airplay on radio stations nationally, and reaching No.1 on 5fm’s Hi5@5 chart. (Performing in Johannesburg ONLY!)
CRASH CAR BURN
Local power-pop contenders CRASH CAR BURN, were ironically formed in London two years ago. The band is made up of Brendan Barnes (Drums) and Garth Barnes (vocals/guitar), who were both in the hugely popular punk band Tweak, Ian Broekhuizen (guitar), who was with both Sugardrive, and Ethel My Love, and Etienne van Rensburg (bass). CRASH CAR BURN recorded their first EP on a short visit home to SA, and following their return to the UK, the single “Broken Skyline”, was featured on Kerrang’s! Unsigned radio show, and added to Kerrang’s! Compilation CD. After recording their second EP, they toured extensively across the UK, Holland and Germany before returning home to SA, and releasing their debut album, ‘This City Needs a Hero’ late last year. The first and second singles, ‘Serenade’ and ‘Get Away’, have already been featured on the 5FM Top 40 and Hi5@5 charts! Their live performances are as their name suggests… explosive! (Performing in Johannesburg ONLY!)
LONEHILL ESTATE
LONEHILL ESTATE is one of the most diverse and dynamic live bands around with a unique pop/rock sound that is influenced by a multitude of genres. Their stage command, song-writing ability belief in just putting on a fun-filled no-ego show have built them a loyal following, and helped them crack the charts on almost every radio station in the country, with ‘Take It All’, their debut album. The single Skyward” also ranked 23 in 5FM’s Top 40 songs of 2006! LONEHILL ESTATE, comprising of Nathan Ro (Vocals and Acoustic Guitar), Gabriel Craig (Bass), Dave Waugh (Electric guitar) and Travis Marc (Drums), have also performed at Woodstock, and won the SA leg of the Global Battle of the Bands. … Not to mention Nathan Ro’s (Jonathan Ross) second place victory on ‘Project Fame Africa’. (Performing in Johannesburg ONLY!)
VAN COKE KARTEL
After revolutionising Afrikaans rock music, becoming the first Afrikaans band to have tracks play-listed on 5fm, and writing themselves into the history books of Afrikaans Music with their excellent musicianship, relevant intelligent lyrics and bold live performances, SAMA Award-winning Fokofpolisiekar took a well deserved break. It was then that two band members, Francois Van Coke (singer) and Wynand Myburgh (bassist) joined up with session drummer Justin Kruger (who also recorded with Fokofpolisiekar), to form the new Afrikaans rock outfit: VAN COKE KARTEL. After releasing their self-titled debut album and taking their high-energy live show on the road last year, VAN COKE CARTEL have quickly climbed the alternative scene, and have music fans begging for more! (Performing in Cape Town ONLY!)
SHY GUEVARAS
Alternative rock band SHY GUEVARAS, are unique in South African rock, with infectious bass lines, solid backbeats, and smooth, vocal melodies. Their songs are as easy to listen to as they are to sing along to. The band released their debut album ‘We Owe You One’ in 2007 and the catchy single “Little Suzie has now reached the top download position on 24.com. The SHY GUEVARAS, Gareth Vorster (vocals), Stuart Scott (guitar), Justin Barnard (bass) and Sergio Barbosa (drums), have an undeniable chemistry on stage, and their live shows are original and energetic. They are anything but… shy! (Performing in Cape Town ONLY!)
MY COKE FEST 08 is presented by Coca-Cola with official radio partner 5fm, in association with Big Concerts.
