The South African passport that American movie star Wesley Snipes attempted to use when leaving the country last month was fake.
This was confirmed on Monday by the department of home affairs.
An investigation was conducted by the department after The Star submitted photocopies of the passport Snipes used to home affairs.
“It was checked and the ID number does not exist. I can confirm it is a fraudulent passport and was never printed by home affairs,” department spokesperson, Nkosana Sibuyi, said on Monday.
He said an internal investigation into the matter was being conducted and its outcome, which will be brought to the attention of Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, would be released once the investigation had been concluded.
Sibuyi said the matter was being treated in a “very serious” light.

Well not quite – not only did we not know he was here, we didn’t know he was from here!
Wesley Snipes has a FAKE SOUTH AFRICAN ID and thought we were too dumb to pick it up… what did u think boyo? That we don’t have TV in deepest darkest Africa?

Hollywood actor Wesley Snipes is an “undesirable person” and his fake South African passport has been confiscated, the department of home affairs said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Nkosana Sibuyi said Snipes slipped into the country undetected on May 23 through the Johannesburg International Airport.
A discrepancy in his ID number was picked up by the system and immigration officers were put on alert.
“On June 1, Snipes was stopped by immigration officials and questioned,” Sibuyi said.
“During the interview it was established that he did in fact have fraudulent South African documentation in his possession.”
Sibuyi said that Snipes’ defence was that he had applied for South African documents for himself and his family through his American attorneys.
