Potter book beats US sales record

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth in the series
The new Harry Potter book has sold 6.9 million copies in the US in its first 24 hours, beating the record held by the previous Potter release.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince sold more than 250,000 copies per hour after its publication on Saturday.

The previous Potter book, Order of the Phoenix, sold five million copies in 24 hours in the US when released in 2003.

The number of US Potter launch parties increased from 800 in 2003 to 5,000 on Saturday, US publisher Scholastic said.

Sales figures for the UK were expected to be released on Monday.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released at 0001 BST on Saturday.
