Review: BUSTA – leave your valuables @home

Thanks to one of our readers for this review – straight from the heart!

Yo, I had such a blast at the Busta concert! I went there with a friend with the hook up so I had a backstage pass. The line up included Busta, Eve, Pro Kid and the beautiful talented KB. I personally enjoyed KB’s performance and her hot dancers (one of which was the…
King/Queen of dance Somizi Mhlongo) who just rocked!

Pro Kid: It was the fist time a saw him perform and I had heard that he was HOT, but I must say I was very disappointed. It was just aight…Then the last song, he brought on Wikid, Selwyn and ten million other dudes and he had these dancers as well so you had a crowd of human beings on the stage shouting and I thought that was very unnecessary!

Eve was really hot. She did about 6 songs though and let some of her dancers bust some moves for us. She never had a single wardrobe change or any actual effort in the performance. I find that a lot of these American artists when they come here to perform they really don’t put any effort into it. I feel that they undermine the “AFRICAN” crowd because I have seen EVE on MTV doing her thang on stage and one can see the effort she took to the performance. AnYWAY-she was cool.

Mr Busta Bust was hot, he also made people wait a while before he actually came on stage. I was back stage before he came on and just before EVE finished he got into the Mercs saying he is going to the hotel to change!

He also threw a fanny wobble about people recording him on stage with their phones of digi cams, and then threatened to leave if he saw even a single person recording him. But he made it back, got over himself and kicked ass. But again: get on stage-grab the mic- smoke a blunt-on stage, do your songs and bounce! He hooked me up though, I liked the songs but there was nothing amazing about his performance.

PROBLEM-thieves! My phone got stolen, my friends phone got stolen, my friends friends phone got stolen and everyday I speak to people about the concert, first thing they say is that their phones got jacked at that concert.

It seems there was a syndicate of cell phone thieves (on a serious note) operating at that concert, its actually hectic how many people I know whose phones got jacked there. It’s actually disgusting but we do live in that kind of society!

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE, EVEN AT CLUBS-LEAVE YOUR PHONE IN THE CAR! THESE $@**>>> ARE SLICK!

Editista: We heard via someone in the know that these guys/girls buy golden circle tickets and steal stuff all night and live off it for the rest of the month – someone needs to do something – it’s clearly out of hand – we also know a few people who had things stolen.

I’m still annoyed about last year’s so-called gig with Busta and DMX in Midrand that we actually drove to and hung out at waiting for our heroes like fools…d*mn dawgs… Well apparently they’re back this year and it’s a lot more of an official gig with them head-lining the ARTS ALIVE festival – so we hope they’ve stopped pulling our legs. If he doesn’t rock up, PROKID is a pleasure to watch 🙂

One of the first artists to rewrite the rap style guide by fusing a unique ragga-inspired, halting rhyme style laced with lyrics of incredible complexity, ingenuity and humour is about to hit the South African stages this September. Annual arts extravaganza, Jourg Arts Alive is bringing Busta Rhymes to perform at Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday 3rd September!

Supporting Busta Rhymes is one of the most potent battle lyricists in the local rap scene, PROkid; as well as one of the sexiest and most accomplished female vocalists KB. This fascinating combination of lyrical and vocal diversity from’Woo-Hah’ to ‘Wozobona’ to ‘ Musica’ should not only have fans bopping their heads so hard, but also prove that where music is concerned synergy is rife.

Born in East Flatbush, Brooklyn in 1972 of Jamaican heritage (a definite influence on his rapping style), Busta Rhymes broke into the rap game in 1996 with his unconventional and popular solo hit single, “Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check!” featured on his hit debut album, The Coming. His second album, When Disaster Strikes, debuted at number three in September 1997. Extinction Level Event followed a year later and in mid-2000 Busta released Anarchy.

Undoubtedly one of the most creative artists to come out of label Elektra, with his crew Flipmode squad, his album titles tell of a catastrophic effect he causes with his rhymes. His most recent offerings include hit tracks, Gimme Some More, Pass the Courvosier, Make it Clap amongst others. Busta Rhymes has also been very instrumental in bringing invention and humour into hip hop, inspiring even the phenomenal and wacky style of our very own bigwig rhyme genius Pitch Black Afro!

Opening acts PROkid and KB have also been breaking major musical waves locally. Known in the hip hop world as the kid who had killed many hip hop heads with his powerful lyrical skills, proudly Sowetan rapper PROKid broke into the mainstream last year with his hit single “Soweto”, and finally released his long-awaited and phenomenal album Heads and Tales recently. Also having released her much-anticipated hit album recently is R & B songstress KB with the rocking dance hit ” Musica”.

The annual Joburg Arts Alive International Festival springs to life on Thursday 1st September and runs to Sunday 4th September 2005 across various venues in Johannesburg; and features a wide array of cultural art forms including music, visual art, theatre, spoken word, comedy and dance, delivered by the finest South African, African and international artists.
