We’re still on at you Durbanites about you bad reputation for attending cultural events – come on, wozani… go and support young artists. Put on your berets and get to the exhibition opening on Monday the 15 May 2006.
“Co-ordinates” a solo exhibition by Grace Kotze Co-ordinates is Grace Kotze’s third solo show, worked on over an intensive five month period forming an intrinsically linked collection of oil paintings which work as a group of individual art works but also as
one. The works expand on and link one another, setting up many points of dialogue within the show.
Opening Monday, 15 May at 6:30pm.

“Foursome” an exhibition of work by Pascale Chandler, Di Maroun, Marlene Wasserman, and Sharon Zoepke. The idea for this exhibition was born out of Pascale’s studio where all four meet on a regular basis to motivate one another.

FUR, FISH, AND FEATHERS by Coral Spencer Domijan
“Fur, Fish, and Feathers” is an exhibition of oil paintings by Durban-based artist Coral Spencer Domijan. This is Coral’s 3rd solo exhibition at artSPACE durban.
This exhibition is about painting. Coral is a painter who loves the stroke of the brush on the canvas and the smell associated with the oil paint when she is busily working in her studio.
There is no overriding theme to Coral’s exhibition this year (unlike last year’s “Maid in Africa” exhibition) except this love of painting all the while playing around with the composition
and light.

Desmond Zeederberg’s “Carnival of Perception” exhibition of paintings and installation opens at artSPACE durban today.
“Carnival of Perception” by Desmond Zeederberg
Perceiving the way one understands and interprets the world around us fascinates Zeederberg. He notes that many strive to attain perfect perception through religious enlightenment, some deliberately skew theirs through the use of chemicals, and many allow others to formulate their perceptions for them.
In this Zeederberg’s first solo exhibition at aSd, he tries to distance himself from his own perceptions and create artworks from the viewpoint of randomly chosen individuals. He finds it impossible to withdraw completely so what is left is a hybrid, cross-pollinated, almost chaotic body of work.
Exhibition closes Saturday, 19 November at 1pm

THE KO FILM FESTIVAL IS HAPPENING IN DURBAN – Get to artSPACE and the other venues!
The KO Video Festival will be showing until the end of October, with the open seminar at eKhaya on the 14th October. artSPACE durban continues to show the videos from India/Pakistan and Germany/International on alternate days. The videos are on show throughout the day and open during gallery hours.
Also on show at artSPACE durban is “All Dolled Up”, a drawing exhibition by the Garret Artists. This exhibition continues until 20 October.
MORE ON THE FEST:
Video, as a contemporary art form has been difficult for most gallery goers to come to grips with. This is often the case with things that are unfamiliar. Contemporary video art is challenging and often makes direct socio/political comment and or evokes a sensibility that is very close to the technological realities we find ourselves living in. Video Art has been part of the western art history cannon since the late fifties but only really made any significant impact on the South African art scene from the early nineties. With little exposure to the medium it is very difficult to develop a relationship with it.
The KO Video – First Durban Video Festival is brought to Durban by PULSE the artist run initiative run by Durban based artist Greg Streak. The KO Video Festival runs from 1-31 October, 2005 and sees some 300 contemporary video works from 28 different countries shown at 5 different venues across the city of Durban.
The works are shown in cinema-type screenings with each country represented by a DVD loop of work. There are video works from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, India/Pakistan, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, South Africa and a host of other countries. The works are spread out across Durban at the following venues: Durban Art Gallery, KZNSA Gallery, Vega (Westville), Art Space Durban and Ekhaya Media Lab in Kwa-Mashu (screenings here shown on request).
A conference will be held on Friday 14th October, 2005 at the Ekhaya Media Lab in Kwa-Mashu from 9h30 am. The conference is not to be missed. It includes critically acclaimed UK filmmaker Owen Oppenheimer, Greg Streak, Jose’ Ferreira, Storm van Rensburg and Minnette Výri – one of South Africa’s premiere video artists. There is a bus leaving at 8h30 from the City street campus of the Durban Institute of Technology for anyone interested. “Garret Artists”- a group of artists coordinated by fibre/textile artist Jeanette Gilks-will again be exhibiting a selection their drawings at artSPACE durban opening on Tuesday, 4th October at 6pm.

“All Dolled Up” aims to explore how 2 dimensional images have been transformed via technology and will reveal how students have gained insight into processing, reworking and manipulating existing images. These drawings will expose a variety of inspirations and a diverse range of images will emerge – expressive, perceptual, symbolic, dreamed and remembered and sometimes combinations of these.

artSPACE durban is a new initiative in… Durban that recently opened its doors.
artSPACE durban is located in a warehouse in a light industrial area of Durban, South Africa. artSPACE durban is a SPACE for artists of all disciplines to interact within. There are three galleries to exhibit in and on the floor above are artists studio spaces to rent.

“Snaps” is an exhibition of photographs by Peter Bendheim, who is well known in Durban as the editor of MetroBeat magazine. This is Peter’s first solo exhibition and he will be exhibiting images of Durban and other places.
Peter manages to capture snapshots of Durban that many of us see but never seem to take. Peter is never without a camera at hand. His use of intense colour saturates the image and makes it more alive, almost surreal. His love of Durban emanates from the images.

“Chinese Whispers” by Terrence Patrick

The work sometimes has Allegorical or Symbolist intentions, which Terrence likes to define as ‘magical realism’. He strives towards the condition of music, dance and poetry and the work is often ironic, erotic or comic. He has painted all his adult life and considers the Durban artist/ poet Willie Chalmers (now deceased) his most important influence. The exhibition
will show mainly paintings or drawings and they be representative of the last ten years or so.
