STUDENTS… we know how it feels – we’ve been there… the jacaranda flowers have come and gone which means that your exams are nearly over! We hope you pushed through brothers and sisters… it’s all worth it.
Just two pointers to all young students from us old professional knowalls
1) make sure what you’re studying is something you ACTUALLY want to do as a career – if not- CHANGE IT NOW before you waste more time and
2)Once you’re sure you’re studying the right thing, TAKE SOME OF IT IN!!!! Don’t just ‘pass exams’ – try and learn a few things – they’ll really help you get ahead.
Anyway, after that diatribe, the good news is there’s a year-end party for students this weekend – ENJOY!!!!
This is the first of what will definitely be a diarised event in future years to come! On FRIDAY 25th November, student village is hosting it’s first ever PENS DOWN party in commemoration of what has been a smashing year for us as a company.

Thanks to Mbali for directing us to this article – it’s a great site STUDENT VILLAGE that doesn’t just spill out the ‘where to party’ info (we thought that’s what being a student was all about.) but instead has loads of useful, empowering and positive living messaging.
They ran a survey over two months on the site earlier this year where they asked students to be upfront about their sexual activities, granted they onlu had 1000 people fill in the survey, however the results are interesting – here’s a scary thought – one out of every four aren’t using any form of protection against unplanned pregnancies or sexually transmitted infections (STIs)…. That’s intelligent. Check the rest out here.
Here’s a bit:
The results of the Student Village Sex Survey 2005 are out – and while many students are “safe sex” savvy, others are dicing with disaster.
The survey ran on www.studentvillage.co.za for two months between mid-March and mid-May, and was filled in by over 1 000 students. Over 90 % of them are between 17 and 24 years old, and just under half (44%) are female. Almost 70% are black, 15% are white, seven percent are coloured, and five percent are of Indian descent. The others were shy about letting Student Village know which group they fell in to.
The students attend lectures at varsity campuses countrywide, such as Cape Peninsula, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan, North West, Rhodes, Tshwane, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Kwazulu Natal, Pretoria, Stellenbosch, Free State, Wits, and Vaal. Also represented are students from the University of the North and the University of the Western Cape.
Unsafe sex still an issue
Almost two-thirds of these students say they know “everything” about HIV/Aids, and 38% believe they know “enough”. Many students are being careful – 60% are using condoms. But – while others are using either the pill or a contraception injection (14%) – one out of every four aren’t using any form of protection against unplanned pregnancies or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Even if you take into account that about 17% claim they’re still virgins that still means a lot of unsafe sex is taking place on South African campuses.
Asked whether Aids could be cured by sleeping with a virgin, 97% are savvy enough to know that this is just a myth. Group sex is definitely not a favoured pastime, and most of them have no major issue with homosexuality. Inter-racial sex also isn’t a big deal – over half these students say “if someone’s hot they’re hot, it doesn’t matter what race they are.”
