CHARACTER Breakdown…

1. Siyabonga Sibanda

Black, Male

Siyabonga Sibanda is about +/-45 years old. He is from a rural background and has been working in the city for a number of years. For the few years he has been running his own car wash business near to the urban hostel where he lives. He deals only with cars. He is still ‘in the old ways’ and believes that the safest place for one’s money is under the mattress. When he sends money home to his wife, he does so by putting it in an envelope, and sending it with someone who is travelling by taxi to his village.

2. Mmaka Madikizela

Black, Male

Mmaka Madikizela is about +/-30 years old. He is one of Siyabonga’s best friends. Mmaka lives in the same hostel. He is from a different rural area than Jerry. Mmaka was suspicious of banks until he listened to a radio programme one day when he heard what banks are, how one’s money can be kept there safely, and how one can get a bit of extra back if you always leave some money in your bank account. Because Mmaka is a confident and inquisitive person, he visited a bank after that. A person at the bank explained the different kinds of services that he can get at a bank. After listening very carefully, and asking some questions, he opened a savings account. He now has his wages paid directly into his account. He is saving to buy bricks for a house he wants to build his fiancýe. And he uses his bankcard to send money to his mother.

3. Fanuel Ngubane

Black , Male

Fanuel Ngubane is about +/-20 years old and lives in the same hostel. He has recently come to the city from a deep rural area. He is very shy, and unskilled in many ways. He is working as a cleaner in an office block in town and gets paid his wages weekly. This is his first job. For him seeing the real, hard cash at the end of every week is precious. It is proof that he has been paid. He has no understanding as to what banks are and what they do.

4. Gloria Morake

Black, Female

Gloria Morake is a matronly +/-30 client consultant at the local Standard Bank branch. She is a firm, but kind person who looks like she knows what she is talking about. She can speak at least three languages. She speaks English to clients, but to make them feel at ease, she slips in a few words in the mother tongue of the client.
