AxeJet plane ready for take off
Axejet has redeemed themselves here at Represent with a fabulous response and healthy debate around the campaign. Big Ups. Now we wish we were on the plane! The line up for Ibiza is well-balanced to cater for a range of music tastes and represents the Best of Breed of local DJ’s as the first passengers. We hope you’ve all entered and hold thumbs that you get to join in the bash. We look forward to the rollout. AxeJet, the risqué new airline by Axe deodorant, has been cleared for take-off to the party capital of the world – Ibiza, Spain. The airline, in partnership with 5FM, Metro FM and The Sunday Times takes to the sky on Satruday 18 August. Well-known 5FM DJs: DJ Fresh and Roger Goode as well as Metro FM’s Thomas and DJ Fistaz and DJ Tira are confirmed as the first passengers. The AxeJet aircraft is currently being prepared for take-off at OR Tambo International Airport and is scheduled to make its first flight to the sunny shores of Ibiza for a week of sun, music and parties. The Boeing 727 will have the first ever Mile High Class with all the AxeJet luxury trimmings – as seen on television. Targeted at young men, AxeJet will combine male fantasy with air travel to provide luxuries as yet unheard of in the local market. Apart from sexy cabin attendants, cheekily dubbed “mostesses”, the service will also include racy in-flight entertainment with a variety of options like pillow fighting, spanking and mud wrestling. Tickets for the maiden flight are already reserved for a host of well-known South Africans and a handful of lucky Axe competition winners. Axe users will be required to purchase a can of Axe and SMS their unique barcode to 33975 to stand the chance to join the Mile High Class this August. A limited number of tickets will be available for sale through selected travel agent partners. More details will be made available in the Sunday Times, on 5FM and Metro FM and at www.axejet.co.za. Whereas AxeJet was executed purely as a marketing campaign in overseas markets like Germany, Australia and New Zealand, the South African venture will aim to make this fantasy airline a reality with trips to exotic locations. Axe Brand Manager, Shren Moodley says: “Ibiza was the obvious choice for our first destination, and who better to fly our top house DJs to the island than AxeJet? We know our DJs can shake up the party over there, just like we know AxeJet can seriously shake up the airline industry. Our new service is about making every guy’s fantasy a...
Represent Revisits: Studio 83
Some of you will remember an interview with “The Cut” contestant Gorgeous George in January – my how time flies. With the phenomenal proliferation of blogging, online mags and offline mags, we caught up with him to discuss where his magazine journey has taken him and to check out his June 16 special edition. We fill you in on the “Creative Editor” – thanks to AmorAmor for the interview. PS: Click on the flyer to see Represent’s latest ad featured first in S83. Comments? Click here to fly to Studio83. 1. The magazine has been running for a few months now. Has your readership increased and how do you measure it? Well it’s not really about the readership _ it’s about doing what you really want and others appreciating it. The last couple of months of the magazine have been about growth not numbers. After this one we can start talking about numbers. 2. How do you source your contributors? Before you go to bed with S83 Magazine, you have to love it first (no sexual connotations intended). This means that before you can write for S83, you have to love the magazine first. Most contributors are in love with S83, so that makes a lot easier for them to write for the magazine. Most approach S83 to see if they can write for the magazine and they mostly do. Sometimes S83 bumps into creative lifestyle igniters then the usual happens – they hook up. 3. Your graphic and photographic contributors are amazing. Have you considered running a design competition to source new designers? Well S83 is looking for sponsors for that idea. S83 is a magazine where you will find your black diamond talent and it will be great to reward the designers and photographers. That is still work in progress. 4. I showed your mag to a cousin from Cape Town who was very impressed. Being an aspiring young entrepreneur himself, his first question was, “how do you make your money?” Has the magazine become an income stream for you? I’m sure it’s not your only source of income. Care to share your secrets? It’s not a secret really. The 1st six months was all about growth. Now that S83 has grow(n) the next step is to take it to the next level. S83 does not generate income yet. It will be very soon. No, S83 is not the Creative Editor’s Source of income. 5. Are you happy with the way the magazine is evolving? Yes. 6. In terms of exposure, do you think you are reaching your target audience? S83 target audience is not everybody. So yes, we...
Represent Review: Omar Pene
How we wish we could have been there to get down with The Matrix as he swung his hips to Senegalese rhythms transfixed by the backing singers agility. Despite his opening sentence, we’re sure he had no problem doing the kwasa-kwasa at Kippies: Change is good they say, but I have to admit, I’m a bit nervous when it comes to dealing with cultural adjustments and their resulting (pre-requisite) behaviour. Well, to sift through the chuff – I plunged head first into unbeknown territory when I marched into Newtown’s legendary Jazz club – Kippies International – to attend the live music show from Senegal’s jazz star: Omar Pene. The atmosphere on 66 Quinn Str (Cnr Carr) was made lively by the opening act: Nathi and the Band performing a remix of the famous “Mangwane Mpulele” with all of us automatically joining in! The mood became emotional as we all listened as one to the poignant title track: Soze- a dedication to his late sister who passed away from an AIDS related illness. Nathi has dedicated the track to all live with HIV/AIDS. (Nathi/Soze, the album is out on sale now!) Apart from the annoying bankcard machines being offline, the ambience was groovy, welcoming and conducive to a good night in Jozi`s cultural heartland – Newtown. Then came the cultural twist as Omar Pene took us on a hip-swinging journey of authentic Senegalese dance floor tunes, even the Matrix lost all control and hit the dance floor Big Time. Kippies had a true multicultural audience on Friday; all paying homage to the singing sensation that is Omar Pene; there were us Darkies (dressed to shame the devil as usual), Whities in their droves (well prinked up too admittedly!) and enthusiasts of all sorts! Omar had us eating out his hands as we got down to the elaborate “Kwasa-Kwasa” dance of North West African origins, shaking it till the end. At one point I found myself multitasking as I gasped, stared and pondered on how horrified the Teasers girls would be if they could witness the things which Mr. Pene`s lead backup singer and beloved daughter could do with (just) her hips (Ka Mmago!!!). Omar Pene came to South Africa to perform at the Durban Film Festival, but owing to the dedication of Africa Synergy and the support of Kaya FM to the continuous development of a cultured Jozi inner City, Kippies international became the proud host of this ingenious and indigenous Senegalese artist. Nothing could have been more befitting and so rewarding! How grateful we are to have such culturally inclined international music supporters such as Africa Synergy, Kippies International and Kaya FM. For loads...
