Represent Review: Best of Ian & Rory
Sharpile to John for his words, if you’re a big fan of Ian von Memerty or Rory Rootenburg like John is, this sounds right up your alley. The Best of Ian and Rory plays at the University Of Johannesburg Theatre on June 5, 6, 8 and 9. Booking is open at Computicket. Two lives, played out on a stage in one and a half hours – it was an honour attending the Best of Rory and Ian show at the University of Johannesburg Arts Centre. I’ve been waiting in anticipation since last year to see this show. Those that know Rory Rootenburg and Ian von Memerty will know that they are two seasoned professionals – no surprises here. The show contained clips of their careers in the music business and contained something for every music lover’s taste. My musical taste buds were tickled when Rory reprised his role as the Phantom of the Opera with two beautiful songs – taking me back to the State Theatre a few years back when the show exploded on our stages. Ian’s rendition of pop classics by Elton John and such had us rolling in the isles with laughter – man this guy can make magic with a piano. There were some sad and some serious moments as well. The segment on Jewish music had me totally lost for ten minutes – but rather than criticize, I’m willing to admit my total ignorance on the subject. The comedy came thick and fast with funny lyrics and the two performers playing a bitchy role while announcing each other – the comments had us laughing our heads off. Rory’s comedy version of Carmen and Ian’s walk through the history of South Africa were very funny and worth the price of admission by themselves. Their pianist also needs a mention. He played flawlessly and even participated in some of the antics on stage. As I said – nothing new in this show – you get what you expect from two artists of this caliber. Good, solid performances, brilliant vocals, brilliant “piano”, and a good chuckle. Go see it – I highly recommend it – they have a very limited run in Johannesburg. ************************************* PR: They are two of South Africa’s best-loved entertainers and they’ve joined forces in a hilarious and moving not-to-be-missed journey down musical lane. The inimitable music duo of Ian von Memerty and Rory Rootenberg perform highlights from their favourite musicals in The Best of Ian and Rory which plays Johannesburg for four nights only next month. Rootenberg shares some of the great moments as The Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, does the opera...
London 2012 Logo causing a blog stir
Londoner’s are not impressed with the 2012 Olympics logo. And to be honest, nor are we – it’s pretty fugly. Have a long look at it… what do you see? Stare long and hard now – can you make out anything? It’s supposed to be a “powerful” and “modern” rendition of the letters 2012…. Reminds me of when I was in Std 3 trying to draw ‘cool’ graffiti style titles for my school projects. Badly. Just to check if we’re out of touch with logo design and branding trends, we asked one of the best designers we know to have a look and tell us his thoughts – he said, and we quote: “What is that? Jeez that’s crap.” Your thoughts? Bloggers are venting their anger and confusion around the logo which looks to be a little too abstract for the everyday man. What will be interesting is what happens from here… if enough bloggers voice their opinion, will the public voice hold any weight? This is where blogging and the concept of citizen journalism gets interesting. The popular (and free) underground daily newspaper Metro gives us some of the Bloggers POV – read more here – good old British sense of humour! ‘OMG! The ‘London 2012′ logo makes me want to pluck out my eyes. And it’s going to be everywhere I work. I may die. Or kill. Or both.’ Reynolds, Twitter ‘I would say I’m left speechless but it’s more muttering and bashing my head against my keyboard… Fear not, should you not like pink though as it comes in a further variety of vomit inducing colours – yes, it’s a pick and choose wreck of a logo.’ www.diaryofawebsite.com ‘Despite the fact that if you squint it looks a bit like a couple engaging in an act of oral sex and despite the fact that one of the Londonist co-editors described it as a “joke”, I really like it. To those of you who agree with me – I fear we might be part of an oppressed minority for the next five years.’ Ben, londonist.com ‘The 2012 London Olympics logo looks like bad stone age art.’ dfl, Twitter ‘There were lots of good things about the 80s. Style was not one of them. And yet, this identity screams 1985 at me like a dodgy set of legwarmers.’...

See Rihanna & Amy prepping at MTV Movie Awards
There’s something distinctly voyeuristic about seeing an artist getting ready with the production crew in a quiet backstage area just before going onto stage with Jay-Z at the MTV Movie Awards- particularly if it’s Rihanna, the shiniest star on the pop scene, getting ready to perform her ella ella ella hitsong Umbrella. You can watch Rihanna “shaking off her nerves” before her big performance with the Jiggaman on MTV’s site right here – it’s a long video so let it load a while. You even get to see a smiley Paris Hilton bopping along to the music – maybe this was before all the jibes and digs around her her impending (today?) jail sentence that she had to listen to from the various presenters including the harsh Sarah Silverman… And for all the Amy Winehouse fans (if you’re not over her already 🙂 ), there’s also a clip of an apparently tipsy Amy hanging backstage with her newly betrothed husband (of two weeks) Blake Fielder-Civil before performing a ‘smouldering rendition of “Rehab” ‘. In the video she does look a bit shaky (doesn’t she always??) but they were definitely looking very in love and happy – which is a good thing considering the news that the performance was actually boo’ed by the audience (glad it doesn’t only happen at the SAMA’s) and they had a huge bust-up the next day or early morning at their hotel according to the dodgy Uk Mirror. Not the smiliest of performers. In terms of celebrating the actors and who won the actual MTV Movie Awards – Barry Ronge would be horrified to hear that the THIRD Pirates of the Caribbean was the big winner, with Johnny Depp winning the Best Performance. Mike Myers and Sasha Baron Cohen (aka Ali G) were also winners. More from Hollywood Reporters...
Winter Advice from the mouths of Babes
Most South African’s will happily admit that we’re sun babies and we don’t handle our winters well. Fact is, a thick jersey is just not enough for a serious cold onslaught. So we thought a little help from fellow South Africans can go a long way to keeping your body and skin from flaking apart. If you find yourself scratching your name into the skin of your arm just for fun, this one is for you – smoothen up babies! We asked some of our friendsters to tell us what their Winter secrets are to making things as bearable as possible. Sharpile to all of you for your words! Marketers – you owe us and chommies we owe you :). It’s amazing how popular and useful Vaseline is – check this article on Unilever’s site for the history of Vaseline. They’ve got a new Vaseline skincare range – now would be a good time to put it to the test. TANTAN – DCT (daily conditioning treatment) only thing that helps for my chapped lips, Clicks or pharmacies for about R50 – Revlon hand and nail cream, apply after EVERY time you wash your hands – long socks to wear with boots – at least 2 x pairs of fuzzy slippers – Funky hat or beanie – stock up on packets of split peas to make pea soup with smoked Eisbein KEKE – Ingram’s Camphor Cream is key for me…for my feet. It’s the best. MEL – Lip Ice / Vaseline – Socks from Woolies – Johnson and Johnson Baby Oil – An oil heater (mine blows once a year cause I cover the vent with a blanket) – New jerseys / woolie tops (normally from Mr Price cos they last one season) – Gloves (normally lose one over summer) – Hair food – Blankets (one easy per season) – I don’t eat carbs over the winter period – Watch more TV – Party less, go out less in general over the winter period – Drink more coffee and soup – Less cooldrinks in winter – Phone bill is normally higher meaning I chat to friends and family more – Budget transferred from clubbing to hiring dvds PEPI – Glycerine to put into any body lotion I use at the time. – Vaseline for my lips – Thick stockings – Hand Cream – under vests KELLY – Bio Oil on my face – Johnssons Baby Oil in the bath once a week – Blue Seal Vaseline – If my feet feel dry I slather Vaseline and baby oil and put a pair of socks on – Vaseline Skin Food is not rich enough for me so I mix it with...
