An Environmentalist with a Passion, Michael O’brien-Onyeka.
Represent caught up with Environmentalist Michael O’Brien-Onyeka, the Executive Director of Greenpeace Africa to discuss issues around Global Warming and to find out where Africa as a continent stands in the fight against this phenomenon. Read the interview after the jump. 1. What has been the number one priority in your portfolio as an environmental activist and why As a Pan African environmental activist on a continent where many are already feeling the impacts of devastating climate change, I am working as a catalyst; seeking solutions for, and promoting open, informed debate about society’s environmental choices. We can no longer continue to ignore the plight particularly of the many vulnerable women and men – who although did not necessarily contribute to global warming trends – are now having to deal with environmental and social injustice. As an activist, it is also about speaking truth to power irrespective of how uncomfortable we may feel or make others particularly governments and corporates feel. For me as an activist it is also about the courage to not simply think out of the box, but also being willing enough to throw away the box altogether in the quest to create a better legacy for humanity. For example if we continue allow over fishing to regulate the oceans in the Eastern oceans of Senegal, that would eventually result in an empty ocean which would mean an absence in the ecosystem which would ultimately affect all living creatures on earth for as we know everything lives off another. 2. What are the top main challenges Africa is facing when it comes to preserving the environment? This beautiful continent is at risk. Over 60% of Africa’s population is poor, faced with food insecurity, dwindling livelihoods, poor health and the impacts of decade long unsustainable resource exploitation, growing water scarcity, pollution and overfishing, just to name a few. The scale of the loss of species over the decades is scary to say the least, all made worse by the devastating impacts of climate change. In South Africa alone, poverty among youths is prevalent due to the extremely high number of unemployed youths, and this presents a major challenge. • Over 180 million people in sub Saharan Africa will be directly impacted by the consequences of global warming. • Food security in many African countries and regions will be severely affected by climate change. Agricultural losses are estimated to be possibly severe for several areas (like the Sahel, East Africa, and southern Africa) accompanied by changes in the length of growing periods impacting mixed rain-fed, arid and semi-arid systems becasuse of changes in the eco-system. · According to the...
Well Wishes to David Tshabalala.
“You’re only as good as your last show” is a quote the SoulProviders team carry with them in and out of the organisation as they manage some of the most exciting brands around. These words are also a testament regarding our own Graphic Designer, David Tshabalala, one of the chosen few to appear in a Vuzu reality show with Creative Union. As he embarks on this glitz and glam project (set to highlight him as one of the young Graphic Designers Johannesburg needs to watch) we at SP think he is worthy of the applause. To kick it all off, we summoned the big guns of SP, to share with us here at Represent Headquarters, their well wishes for David. Sibongiseni, Football Journalist, is quoted as saying “David is an amazing spirit. He likes his job and the variety of people that it brings. I wish him all the best.” While Dumile, Community Manager, says “Go get ’em creative beast! We have no doubts you’ll represent SP to the fullest.” David has been with SoulProviders for a good five months and he is one of the most sort after Graphic Designers the organisation has. Khumo and Violet also wish David the best of luck as he begins shooting for the reality show today. You wonder what gift David has, how we know he will succeed? Words from Thina, the creative copy master reveal that “David AKA Goliath Slayer AKA Davidooo AKA Magic Marker Man (just made that up, oooh & I like it) AKA Resident Design Extraordinaire. Show them what you got booooi. All the bestes.” We cannot deny the impact David’s skills have had on his colleagues. Even the newbie of the organisation, Gcobisa, had some encouraging second draft words to add: “As you usually avoid tedious human fallacy, excel in what you do and remember that greatness begets perfections. All the best sir!” Indeed, David is the “Sir” of his craft, the master of his territory and we appreciate the work. Vanessa, Community Manager and Editorial Head adds: “David’s work let’s the love shine through!” Bringing the fire is David’s speciality; his work speaks volumes about excellence. Of course, David still gets those random work/colleagues tease-him-jokes, Nokwanda, the resident IT maestro proves this when she says, “David’s got the driest humour but is still the coolest kid on the block” lol, you got jokes girl. Muntu, Digital Community Manager, extends his wishes and says “Be the paragon of digital perfection, see pixels in 3D and project your talent in that pulchritude portrait beyond expectations.” Yes, look up the word in the dictionary. The Head of Client Management,...
