Rand Show 2007, Bring Everyone!
The Rand Show opens for the 112th time on from Friday 30 March to Sunday 15 April 2007 at 10:00am to 20:00pm every day. At the Rand Show (look out for them, they are truly hilarious!) Something Representers might just be interested in is the YFM Lifestyle Zone. Want to be a good writer? Listen to Orwell.
If you believe that you can never stop learning and like to get ideas and direction from the experts every now and then to keep you moving on up, then take a moment to read this article from George Orwell on how to be an effective writer. It’s from an inspirational website called “Pick The Brain”.In today’s world of constant communication: email’s, reports, citizen journalism, increased viral marketing etc we all could do with a reminder of how to write better. We certainly know a number of journalists who could heed his advice! Pass it on! The article is titled : George Orwell’s 5 rules for Effective Writing and you can read the entire article here which we recommend. In summary the rules are: Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. Never use a long word where a short one will do. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. Never use the passive where you can use the active. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous. For all the academics and intellects or those in need of a reminder of your word-filled tertiary days – we recommend that you read the entire ORIGINAL article here! Enjoy! AxeJet – a playboy mansion in the sky?
I love a campaign that starts off with teasers, like this new campaign for the cheeky AXE brand. I always leave the Sunday Times travel section for a Tuesday or Wednesday read and hence today on this fake Sunday aka Human Rights day morning, I decided to pick up the paper and see what exotic destinations are going for a bargain. And then I spotted the Axe advertisement. It’s on page 14 and pictures a luxurious first class area in a plane with gorgeous air hostesses offering drinks, massage and pampering in a jacuzzi. The byline is “Coming soon… An airline that goes all the way.” http://www.axejet.co.za/ So obviously we popped on over to the site. Any campaign that offers an outsider’s chance at free travel never mind luxurious first class, is a campaign for us – we believe firmly in the “if you’re not in you can’t win” mentality. At the moment all you can do is give them your details. You then receive an email that says “welcome player” thanks you for signing up and tells you that you will find out as soon as the new website launches. Let’s hope this teaser does not let us down and becomes another boring datacollection exercise… advertisers you know who you are. Now we can’t imagine that this deodorant brand has actually started an airline – particularly a luxurious one. Our guess is that its an online campaign like a lot of recent campaigns that offers a ’round the world flight with 10 of your friends’ or ‘a playboy mansion in the skies’ or ‘a luxurious first class flight to Sweden’ or something like that. But it’s clearly more targetted at boys (and I use “boys” with meaning.) Oh well, guess we’ll find out soon. For now, SIGN UP with Inge...
Represent Interview: SPOEK MATHAMBO
Spoek Mathambo’s Spoek Mathambo’s name keeps on knocking on our radar so we thought we’d get straight to it, get in early before the rest & let you know all about this young rebel musician with his own flow. Expect the unexpected when it comes to our featured peeps! In the first of a whole lot of interviews with young people who stand out from the crowd and are defining their own future, here’s SPOEK – see how he rocks . You can check out his MySpace site here where you can hear his music and see his videos. It’s a long interview, but we think it’s worth it! Good luck to you Spoek and BIG UPS for the interview! Keep it up bro! : Represent: So Spoek, give us the short version of your back-story if you don’t mind… from birth to now, how did you find yourself where you are at? How old are you and where do you live? My real name’s Nthato Mokgata, I like to think of myself as the Ndebele prince (and I don’t mean prince like diamante studded one piece lycra suits and hi-heels, but I mean Maraba royal family of Polokwane). My connection to the crown is somewhat remote, but it makes me feel fun inside. I’m the singer, dancer, songwriter, fashion-face, doodle artist extraordinaire. I like watching old episodes of Seinfeld and drinking slush puppies until my face turns lime green. I have come to grips with the fact that I’m a bit of a nerd, because hey, what can I say, nerd is very much in vogue now. Everyday I wake up to my grandmother’s voice. She’s 94 and very strong, abnormally strong (and perty) for a lady of her age. She asks lots of questions, like what am I doing with my life, when I’m going to wash the dishes and when I’m, going to get my driver’s license. That’s my driving force. I live in Johannesburg in my mother and father’s house. I am 21. I have been writing songs since I was 10. I never, ever thought I could be a professional rapper. I wanted to become a ninja, a computer programmer and a doctor, then eventually went to med school (because I was a big hippy and wanted to save the world….long story) and ditched the whole ninja thing. I then ditched the whole med school thing and learned to make pictures on the computer…graphic design. I’ve now decided I will become a professional musician. I am in a group called SWEAT_X with the incredibly talented Afrikaaner, Markus Wormstorm. We...
