Ticket Giveaway: Calling all Capetonians in Jozi!

The organizers are calling this one the party is for ‘ex pats’ to get together and party the way they would if they were back in Cape Town! How is that? You ask yourself as a full time Jozi citizen, well try Funky DJ’s playing good … no, make that great music, some of the best in Ol’ Skool Jazz and R&B hits, a lovely chilled atmosphere and just an all round lekker vibe. We are hooking you up with three double tickets to the party… The idea was originated by a group of tight friends, all originally from Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town who have been living and working in Jozi for the past 4- 8 years. They wanted to revive the warm feeling and goose bumps they (and a whole lot of other Capetonians) got when they heard their favorite old school songs on the radio. When they would scream “this is my song!!!” and got up to do the ‘Bart’ or ‘Spaceboy’ or the infamous ‘Running man’!If you’re thinking “Huh?” then you need to be at this party to learn all of these super cool moves! For one night you can all forget about the hustle and bustle of Jozi’s fast paced lifestyle, forget about worrying what the next one is going to think about your ‘outfit’, the Classique Party is all about a relaxed environment where people can just be who we truly are… Capetonian! Unfortunately, they won’t be bringing the beach with them this time round, but watch this space as the parties will take place monthly, the next one being at the end of March 2007. Who needs the beach anyway when the DJ line up consists of an all Capetonian ensamble of Natano, better known to Capetonians as Nate Dogg, formally from Good Hope FM, Clint the Legend from the legendary Cape Town nightclub The Galaxy and DJ Shaun Harry, who’s taken Jozi by storm in the past three years with his tight sets at clubs like Satala, Taboo and many more around the city. They’ll be bringing the house down with all the best ol’ skool R&B and jazz from the 90’s and just incase you thought you were not invited, Jozi peeps, you too can come along to the vibe (tone it down a notch tho… remember you’ll be in Cape Town for one night only!) This party is the first of its kind, and the organizers are looking forward to it becoming a big hit over here! Details: Venue: Roka Date: 10th Feb 2007 Cost: R50 Time: 20h00 Represent is giving away three double- tickets to some of our...

Ticket Giveaway: Heavyweight Comedy Jam

Heavyweight Comedy Jam Returns, Fitter and Funnier Than Ever Before! This February sees the return of South Africa’s hottest comedy event when the Heavyweight Comedy Jam takes to the Centre Court stage at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg. We are giving away two double tickets, so you and your partner can laugh your butts off and tell us all about it… Fast earning a reputation as the only place to have your funny bone tickled by the best in the business, 94.7 and Emperors Palace will host the first 2007 Heavyweight Comedy Jam on Friday February 9th at 20h00 – and the line-up is guaranteed to send comedy fans into a spin (that is once they’ve recovered from Laila Ali’s super middleweight fight against Gwendolyn O’Neil which takes place just days before!) Heading the side-splitting list of comedic heavyweights is Canada’s Tom Stade who, legend has it, broke out of the deep and dark backwoods to become a star in his home country on the back of such shows as ‘Stade and Confused’. It’s not the first-time that Stade has had South Africans guffawing in the aisles – Johannesburg is among the many international cities that he has played part of an impressive list that includes New York, London and Amsterdam. Known for his offbeat take on a wide range of subject matter, this versatile and compelling comedian has completed a sell-out show at the Adelaide Comedy Festival, and has appeared in a slate of UK comedy shows, including Channel 5’s ‘The Comedy Store’ and BBC TV’s ‘The Live Floor Show’. The list of homegrown heavyweights is just as impressive- with leading comedian, John Vlismas appearing in the Heavyweight Comedy Jam for the first time. Vlismas needs no introduction to comedy fans – over the years his skewered observations and on-point presentation, as well as his commitment to breaking comedic barriers, has earned him a strong following. Darren Simpson will join the event, having recently played a sold-out six-thousand plus show. The now notorious “Whackhead Simpson” wreaks even more havoc on stage than he does as a regular part of the Rude Awakening Breakfast Show with Jeremy Mansfield on 94.7 Also on the bill is the man who is fast gaining a reputation as one of the country’s funniest – Chris Forrest. Dubbed South Africa’s answer to Steve Wright, Chris’ witty and cynical one-line humour is thought provoking and to the point. Totally nerdish and unflappable, his Drew Carey-looks and slowed-up delivery have ensured that audiences take to him enthusiastically and he is racking up a brace of local and international appearances. Martin Jonas’s brand of comedy (which includes some fantastic impressions)...

Mikanic: In From The Cold

Mikanic is back in South Africa with a number of shows in February and March, and more dates to be added soon. The Cape Town duo Mike and Nick kick off the tour in Johannesburg with two acoustic shows. Shirzad and Alex will join them for the remaining dates ending at the spectacular Oude Libertas amphitheater in Stellenbosch and the much anticipated Sons of Trout reunion show on the 24th of February at Mercury in Cape Town. Mikanic was formed in 2003, with Michael Rennie on violin & vocals and Nick Turner on acoustic guitar & vocals.  Both musicians were already well known on the South African music scene having founded Sons of Trout, one of the country’s top selling acts. With Trout they headlined every major music festival in the country and toured extensively, releasing four albums and opening for a number of international artists. In 2004 Mikanic released its first album, Swimming with the Women, to great critical acclaim and popular success.  The album crossed musical boundaries, established Mikanic’s characteristic sound, and provided the springboard for their departure to the USA. Now based in New York, Mikanic’s line-up features musicians from Japan (Yasuhito Sasaki on lead guitar), India (Shirzad Khusrokhan on bass) and the USA (Alex Beckmann on drums).    Mikanic’s music effortlessly spans genres with influences ranging from rock, reggae and African to hip-hop and jazz.  Lyrically powerful, relevant, humorous and energetic, the music has a wide appeal. With shows that feature virtuosic musicianship, funky grooves and catchy tunes, Mikanic has quickly become one of New York’s hottest live acts. In June 2005, upon returning from tours in the UK and South Africa, Mikanic released a powerful second album, The Subway Tracks, showcasing the diversity and the instant appeal of their sound.  Mikanic also toured Japan with great success. Among other shows, the band played sold-out concerts at Sweet Basil and Mandala in Tokyo and at Olive Hall in Takamatsu, collaborating with some of Japan’s biggest stars, and appearing live on radio and TV. Mikanic has played many of New York City’s legendary venues including CBGB’s, Ace of Clubs and The Knitting Factory. They have also performed at the UN, Lincoln Center and at 9/11 memorial services held at Ground Zero in 2004 and 2005.   Mikanic’s universal appeal lies in the sincerity and positive energy of their music. Their new single Sweet Radio is mastered and up on MySpace. Click here to listen to it.
