What’s happening on JUNE 16th?
We know it’s a public holiday, but never forget that JUNE 16TH is all about remembering and commemorating the SOWETO UPRISING – the Soweto youth whose brave and selfless action in 1976 was a turning point for change in our country. This year is the 30th anniversary of that day and we urge everyone to take some time on the 16th to remember our past and pay hommage to those who gave their …young lives in the struggle for freedom. We must never forget our past in order to continue to move onwards and up. Represent! The main event will be taking place in the FNB stadium – we urge all Representers to go along and join in the day’s events. National Youth Day Rally all roads to FNB Stadium (16 June 2006) The National Youth Day programme will commence with the moment of silence throughout the country at 09:00 which is the approximate time in which the first victim of the June 16, 1976, Hector Zolile Peterson, was shot by the security forces of the time. A march will commence from the Morris Isaacson High school and proceed to the Hector Peterson memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony. President Thabo Mbeki will address a rally at the Soccer City Stadium (FNB) immediately after the wreath-laying ceremony. ********************************************************************** Then there’s live music in Newtown – it’s not on the 16th but it’s all about the 16th: Dr Badela The name Dr Badela comes from a black journalist named Dr Mono Badela. He worked for the Daily Despatch where he was controversially fired for writing about the June 16 Massacre and writing about things as they were. He then moved to Johannesburg and worked for City Press and onto Mail & Guardian. At Mail & Guardian he was again fired for writing black consciousness stories which led him to be exiled to Europe, America etc where he wrote about the true state of affaires in South Africa. While in exile, he worked at the New York Times, mobilizing rallies in Sweden, England etc. Dr Badela became the first Communication Minister at the Eastern Cape after 1994. He later retired and passed on of which its been three years now. He was Honored Doctor of Journalism by the Rhodes University after his death. Hence the band Dr Badela was formed in honor of the late Dr Mono Badela. It’s a 6 piece band with three vocal artists and 3 instrument artist. Long Live Dr Badela! Monday Blues Production Zimele Concert 17 June 2006 @ Horror Cafý 20h30 R50 Line up: Dr Badela, Roots 2000, Mpandekor, Sliq Angel & MXO, Poet: Motofela *****************************************************************...
Dance your way towards SPRING
We love it when we start getting Press Releases for September, it means that SPRING is not far away and you know how we love SPRING. So to encourage us all to look ahead to the gorgeous Spring and Summer Months to come, we thought we’d publish it. We also love the Moving into Dance Company so book your tickets now for SPRING! Civic Theatr…e site. Moving into Dance Site Moving into Dance Mophatong will premiere a new work by Gregory Vuyani Maqoma in the company’s first ever season Flesh at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre later this year. Maqoma’s latest work Flesh is part of a triple bill which also includes Catching the Bird by Sweden’s Marie Brolin-Tani and eMandulo choreographed by Thabo Rapoo. Flesh is inspired by Japanese spirituality, philosophy, rituals and discipline in line with the spiritual healers and prophets of Southern Africa. Stripped of all excess, the work is based on the minimal aspects of unencumbered flesh. Flesh persists, even when transformed after death. Catching the Bird is an abstract piece of choreography inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s two most famous works, the Firebird and Rite of Spring. In it Brolin-Tani has addressed the dichotomy between identifying oneself as part of a group or a culture while still standing alone and taking responsibility for oneself as an individual. As the bird is the image of freedom, and fire is the image of passion, the work depicts the independent, free, passionate soul that is the core of every human being. The Stravinsky music used by the Danish composer Henrik Munch is the base to which he has added in both contemporary and traditional South African music to show how the similarity in the rhythmical complexity stretches worldwide. The scenography designed by Hans-Olof Tani emphasises the atmosphere of searching and the past and current fragility of the internal soul. Brolin-Tani was assisted by is Melody Putu and Belinda Nusser, both South African dancers formerly with the State Theatre Dance Company. Brolin Tani is artistic leader of Skýnes Dansteater, Malmý, Sweden and founder of MBT Dansteater in Denmark. She has produced more than 20 original contemporary dance productions since 1987. Catching the Bird is the result of a Swedish South African cultural collaboration and is supported by the Culture Fund of both governments. The work was premiered in Malmo Sweden in 2005. Thabo Rapoo’s eMandulo explores issues about the importance of the role played by women in traditional society and how that impacts on contemporary living in term of values and morals. For 27 years the trailblazing Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM) Company has been presenting a unique contemporary cross-cultural...

Vote for UJU at Levi’s Young Guns
Have you heard the infectious band UJU yet? They play at ROKA aka the old Color Bar every Thursday night and they are awesome. We’re sure we’re not the only ones to notice the huge dosh Levi’s are spending lately on South African music… and in a NCA underground kind of way. But you know that we at Represent love to make the Underground the Norm… so we bring it to you and the challenge is fo…r you to take it on…COME ON! Support live music! Musicians work very hard! Levi’s Young Guns has nothing to do with the YoungGuns awards we told you about recently. It is instead a plaform to profile 15 of the hottest young bands that are coming through the ranks. We like that. Right now they are inviting you to vote for UJU, Newtown or Nouveau Riche to add one of them to the gigguide. We vote UJU. There’s the first bash “DISRUPTION OF THE STATUS QUO” this coming Friday 9 June at the Space Frame theatre at WITS (Education campus) – 19h30 – R20 to enter. CHIPILE!!! Click here to go to the website for more. Levi’s Young Guns They’re loud. They’re brazen. They make no excuses. They’re the Young Guns, an array of musicians who are about to rip into the very fabric of South African nightlife. Levi’s Original Music is behind this groundbreaking concept, one that will uncover and then unleash fifteen cutting edge musical acts at a series of gigs throughout the country. This is the chance to hear the very talented young performers whilst they’re still fresh. They’re original, uncompromising and incredibly loud. Catch them before they’re household names. Parading under a banner that defiantly calls for a disruption of the status quo, this is what happens when a rebel cause is mixed in with music, counter-culture and self identity. Levi’s Young Guns is not about fame or fortune, musical or hair style, it’s about deliberately disrupting the prevailing order with the aim breaking new ground. The routine has officially changed. Are you on board? Levi’s Young Guns is the latest in a long list of music initiatives supported by Levi’s Original Music. And it’s the most radical. Tapping into the mad energy that swirls around the DIY aesthetics of punk culture, Levi’s Young Guns will provide a platform for the myriad of defiant voices in our local scene. This is a stage built for self-expression, one that is likely to be torn up, burnt down and reignited as these prophets of rebellion take their attitude countrywide. It’s about time we had some bad boys and girls in the...
