More classical highs with the Joburg Philly

Oh yes the Joburg Philly is back again – this time round there’s a child-prodigy pianist of only 24, there’s a hot SA trumpeter and a very popular young conductor – sounds like fun. Unwind from a hectic Wed or Thursday next week with some qulity classical music. The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra performs Haydn, Shostakovich and Mozart The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra’s S…econd Symphony Season fourth week programme will be performed on Wednesday 7 June and Thursday 8 June. Sponsored by Anglo American, the performances feature Haydn’s dramatic Symphony No. 83 (“La Poule”), Mozart’s popular Concerto No.21 and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto Con Tromba and Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 (“The Prague”). Haydn’s Symphony No. 83, one of Haydn’s Paris Symphonies composed in 1784, has become known as “The Hen” because of a curious clucking effect from the strings and oboes in the first movement. One of Mozart’s most popular piano concertos – Concerto No. 21 is the performance that follows. This C Major concerto has captured the hearts of millions of people over the years. Mozart is in his famous “trumpets and drums” mood in this concerto and dazzles us with his humour. The magnificent Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto Con Tromba follows Mozart’s composition. Shostakovitch was such a fine pianist as a young student and he won numerous competitions, his technique was said to be brilliant. However, the astonishing success of his First Symphony, when he was only 20, convinced him that his future lay in composing. Shostakovitch decided to write some piano music to play himself and in 1933 wrote his First Piano Concerto and scored it for piano, string orchestra and the unusual addition of the trumpet as a solo instrument alongside the piano. The very fact that these two instruments are not normally paired clearly gave Shostakovitch an impish urge and allowed his sardonic wit to prevail, especially in the finale where piano and trumpet battle for supremacy. Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 (“The Prague”) ends the memorable performances. Mozart wrote and completed this symphony in Vienna in 1786 and the first performance took place in Prague in January 1787. Two features of this magnificent symphony make it distinctively identifiable – the three movement design and a long, slow introduction. Popular conductor Bernhard Gueller will lead the orchestra. Music director of both Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax, Canada, and the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany, Bernhard Gueller is well known to South African audiences where he has been conducting since 1994. He has been acclaimed as one of Germany’s most talented young conductors and many of his concerts have been broadcast nationally and internationally. Bernhard has extraordinary musicianship, marvellous ability...

ROLY STRUCKMEYER – far too modest!

We have known Roly since our innocent days where we frequented the fabulous Buzz Bar together – or should we say He ran it and we frequented. He being Roly – an extremely modest musician with a voice not unlike the sweetness of Eagle Eyed Cherry and guitar skills to envy. Roly should be a legend in our country – let’s make him one. He’s got a show all to himself by the organisers of Out… For The Nite in Durban – these guys are working hard at resurrecting the vibrancy of the live music scene that rocked Durbs in the 90’s in particular. Big Ups to you! Here it is: Roly Struckmeyer Is Out For The Nite Over the last few decades, a number of names have appeared in the music scene in Durban & some have slowly and quietly faded out of tune while a handful managed to remain sound in the music scene. Amongst that handful of artists, Roly Struckmeyer’s name is mentioned without any hesitancy. Having been a fixture on the music scene in KwaZulu-Natal since the late 80’s, Pietermaritzburg-born acoustic guitarist & vocalist Roly Struckmeyer started playing the guitar at age seven. His music career began when he returned from England in 1989 to form a band known as “House On The Hill.” In the short years of his career as a performer, Roly has toured & performed with names such as Wonderboom and Landscape Prayers. He has also played with a number of amazing bands such as Butternut, The Farryl Purkiss Band & Deluxe to name a few. In 1994, while in America, he played on the Free Stage at a festival in Boulder, Colorado, and was a member of Arapaho for the last year of their career. Roly still remains at the top of his league & will be hosted at Vestige Bistro & Bar corner St. Thomas & Musgrave Road on the 8th of June 2006. The show will resume at 20h30. For more information on the show, please contact Derryn or Clive on 031 201 7767....

Ellis & Bheki coming to Jozi

Durban’s finest performers, Ellis and Bheki – the amazing theatrical duo, will be doing a stint (at last!) in Jozi at the Market Theatre from the 5 April until the 7 May in the Laager theatre. If this work is anything like all the other outstanding work that they have created together over the years – we highly recommend this show. Click here to g…o to the Market Theatre website. The Hungry takes a look at the relationship between Africa and the West and was created by creative artists who are driven by the need to explore powerful issues. The play is a unique and interactive theatre experience. “People are gathering, two magic men are present. Something is going to happen. There are glances, sounds, the energy is increasing, slowly; an extraordinary world is conjured in the ears of everyone there. It is the world of Sinako village. A stranger appears. Why has Mr. Pumpkin Man invited him? The Great Prophet is angry. Nxaloti, the quiet one, goes mad. Ma Gumbi and her friend, Florence, betray the village and things will never be the same again.” The Hungry is performed by the internationally acclaimed performance duo, Bheki Mkhwane and Ellis Pearson, both accomplished and well-known theatre practitioners they bring decades of experience to this, their first full-length collaboration. Full of fun and nonsense, The Hungry, also offers profound insights into some of the issues that concern contemporary South Africa. This exciting theatrical journey makes use of physical theatre and innovative musical instruments. The Hungry Co-written by: Ellis Pearson and Bheki Mkhwane Venue: Laager Theatre @ the Market.
