London’s crazy about Johannesburg – We’re hot hot
YEBO! We’ve said it since we started, AFRICA’S TIME IS NOW!!!! In the past, many a South African, particularly those that have ‘immigrated’ to the UK, had a lot of bad things to say about their motherland… disgraceful really. For what is a person without a place of birth, a place to go home to, a sense of belonging…? We can only guess that choosing to cut ties from your l… and of birth must be a soul-destroying action leaving you fairly lost and blue. Especially when you have consciously made the choice and not been forced to leave. Being forced into Exile is an entirely different situation. Of course it is good to be critical and to have an opinion on your country… but some of the damaging ‘urban legends’ spread by South Africans in the UK in the past are unforgivable. THE GOOD NEWS IS – in our opinion, those days are numbered – THE TRUTH WILL OUT – People are tired of reading about negative stuff on South Africa – it’s time to spread the good news! And for once, people in London can believe the HYPE. The rejuvenation of Johannesburg city is a popular topic in many a London newspaper. Represent has even been commissioned to supply content for the South African TIMES based in London. Click here for a story by Editorista on inner city living. Click here for a story by Editorista on what to do in Jozi for a foreigner. This column will be a monthly one so you subscribe to their newsletter…! The latest story on Johannesburg comes from the much-respected GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER in the UK. Focusing on the rejuvenation and soaring property prices, it gives a really positive but fair spin on the recent developments… thanks to author Rory Carroll for his words. Click here for the full story: Boomtown Jo’burg rides the new gold rush With crime down, soaring property prices show scale of city’s regeneration Rory Carroll in Johannesburg Monday April 17, 2006 The Guardian The gold mines are long exhausted but there is a new way to get rich in Johannesburg: property. An economic boom is transforming what was once South Africa’s byword for crime and decay into a vibrant metropolis. Muggers and squatters in the notorious centre are making way for yuppies, loft apartments and renovated skyscrapers in what is one of the world’s fastest-growing property markets. By some estimates the value of real estate has risen 35-fold in six years, an extraordinary surge that outstrips growth rates in Manhattan, London or Sydney. Some developments include platinum-plated taps, rooftop swimming pools and helipads. Popping up like...
Wallpaper* magazine now available in Rands
Wallpaper* magazine, (the design, architecture and style bible used by anyone that wants to know what great taste and creative brilliance is) has once again featured a South African location. The May issue features Caffe e Vida, a South-African based portuguese-inspired chain of coffee shops… We assume they are referring to the popular shop in Kloof stre… et in Cape Town that serves exceptional espresso’s and pastries… But there’s a whole bunch all over CT and even one in Greenside in Jozi… all will be revealed when we get our hands on this edition. But know that if your establishment gets into Wallpaper*, you’re made. CLICK HERE TO GO TO VIDA E CAFFE WEBSITE – nice site! AND STILL ON WALLPAPER* and their ‘vision’….Applause all round as Wallpaper gives the South African consumers a nod by putting the RAND pricing of the magazine on the front cover… obviously it’s in high demand on SA bookshelves! We love to see our Rand side-by-side with the heavyweights of world currency. You go RAND! Thanks to Jaunted.com for pointing it out to us – click here for the full article! The May issue of Wallpaper* is the most inspiring issue of the magazine in quite some time, with the mag’s Newspaper section leading the way. Case in point: David Kaufman’s article on the proliferation of Israeli cafý chains, several of which are eyeing international markets. The accompanying sidebar pegs 12 coffee bar chains around the world, including Vienna’s iconic Aida, Jordan’s Blue Fig, California’s Peet’s, and Cape Town’s Vida e Caffý. The Cape Town chain gets the highest aesthetic praise. Also covered in the section is the happy return of Ostalgie. Berlin’s former East German State Council building, circa 1964, has morphed into the European School of Management and Technology. (It’s hard to keep the excitement out of a place like that, we guess) The honors go to HG Merz, an architecture firm focusing on museums and renovations, with offices in Stuttgart and Berlin. Also noteworthy in the May issue: Macau travel, Portuguese canned fish packaging, Paris’ Stalingrad ‘hood, and new Swedish furniture designers. Note that South Africa joins the Wallpaper pricing elite, with the price of the magazine now listed in rand. We know just the coffee shop for reading the mag. ************************************************** May 2005 PONTE is a popular topic in architectural circles and is definitely hot property if it’s featured in the latest Wallpaper* magazine – a true honour for any building – particularly a neglected and forgotten about one… We don’t have access to the article but if anyone that does could fill us in on what it says...
Can you go for 2 days without technology?
Do you remember the World Vision 40 hour famine weekends that were held back in the day? They’re held all over the world to raise awareness around the suffering of impoverished children and communities. There are a lot of hungry people out there, especially here in Africa, and World Vision are calling on the more privileged to do something about …it. So how does it work? Well on the 5th, 6th and 7th May you have the chance to show your support by EITHER going without food or by not engaging with the technology that surrounds us for two days… the question is… which one is harder? There are already a few celebs on board like David Kau and Lee Kasumba from YFM… WE ENCOURAGE ALL REPRESENTERS TO GIVE IT A BASH! Here’s how it works – click here to go to the site and ENTER. 1. schools / youth groups / church groups / community groups / corporate teams etc register to take part 2. they organise as many people to take part and as many sponsors of the team members as possible 3. they organise as much fun media attention of their group as possible generating interest in the 40-Hour Famine 4. participants go without food for 40-hours from Friday 5th May at 20h00 until Sunday 7th May at 12h00 – they can drink water at any time and replace meals with fruit juice, milk or other beverages OR they can experience having no access to technology during this time – no phone, no computers, DVD, CD’s, no transport etc. – collect all funds and send them to us. Your famine kit will include a deposit slip or you can make an electronic transfer to the account number provided. Return all sponsor tracking forms. MORE ON CONCEPT The 40-Hour Famine has been held in World Vision countries world wide as a major awareness raising and fund raising activity for many years. Day after day grinding poverty deprives millions of people throughout the world of the essentials of a decent life. Whilst the world has abundant resources to meet the basic human needs for nutritious food, clean water, shelter, healthcare, education and the means to earn a living, millions of people do not have a fair share of these resources. The World Vision 40-Hour Famine is one way in which you can help start to change this uneven balance in our country. Our children are the hope of our future – the light in a dark world. Yet many of them are walking in a dark world, walking alone, afraid and often hungry. With help gained from funds...
