STEREO MC’s. FLASH REPUBLIC, GOLDFISH join the party
So the COCACOLA COLAB MASSIVE MIX is hotting up with a whole lot more bands joining the frey … One thing is clear about this concert, although the name refers to the Colab album that was released last year, there’s nothing Kwaito or SA HipHop about this line up – it’s for the ROCKERS in the house… unless there will be suprise additions at the end – what about MXO, Brasse van die Kaap, …Kwane Experience, Tumi and the Volume? We’re sure they would bring a little soul to this African-based event??? Anyway that’s just the Represent way of thinking… moving on, the latest bands announced at this gig are: AUDIO BILLY’s, STEREO MC’s, ROGER GOODE (some house music in the mix! nice one) FLASH REPUBLIC (fabulous band featuring Tamara Dey) and GOLDFISH (hot hot hot). Don’t forget the HUGE names of Fatboy Slim and Metallica … Then there’s Simple Plan, Collective Soul, The Rasmus, Seether, Fatboy Slim, Prime Circle, The Finkelsteins, The Parlotones, Arno Carstens, Flat Stanley, State Far Better, Karen Zoid, Fokofpolisiekar, Sitter, and the SpoonFeedas. Our opinion is that they love the anonymity that SA brings them – they can chill out without being constantly hounded or followed – well not by us anyway, you never know who tagged along with them. SABC CHANDELIER
Anyone that has had the pleasure of working in the SABC buildings will tell you that it is a strange place. I was given a tour a while back of the bomb-proof underground levels in radio park – damn… it’s like stepping back in time! Do not be scared of the mullet styled gargoyles skulking around in the shadows – some of them have worked there for over 20 years – they don’t bite! The SABC was established in 1936 with the first radio service being launched – the English Service – very pooh pooh hockey sticks my dear – I can just imagine the accents. It was originally called ‘the A Program’ and I can even remember my Gogo referring to it as that! My best place within the SABC is the foyer near the K1 auditorium – you know the one I mean – BLING BLING all over again – check out this amazing Chandelier. Wab blog – The Lady at the Spar
Every now and then we come across a Blog that is worth reading and has some ties to the sentiment of Represent… Check out the musings of someone called “Gogopimp” from a blog called Worker and the Bee… Click here to go there. I was telling some gents the other day about the lady at the spar on sunday. I was in the Spar pic…king up some fresh fruit. Whilst standing in the line to have the fruit weighed I could not help but notice how the lady weighing the fruit was not answering anybody upon being greeted. She would just take the bag of fruit from them, place it on the scale, slap on the sticker and then hand it back. “hmmmm” I pondered, “why is she not greeting anyone?” I quickly conjured a plan to get her to speak. When it came my turn to have my fruit weighted I handed her the first of my bags and said “The lichis are looking quite good today, what do you reckon?” To which she smiled, bowed her head slightly, slapped on a sticker and took my next bag. Dammit, I was running out of bags fast. I had to come up with something chop chop. She was at least in her early to mid fifties, standing all day at the spar weighing packets of fruit can’t be fun. When it came time to take my last bag of fruit from me I held the bag for one inkling of a second longer than she expected, looked her straight in the eye when she looked up, and I said “How are you?” “I’m fine.” she replied, smiling. Her breath was so strong with alchohol it was like being hit by a tank (a cornerhouse abrams tank i.e. hard). It was no wonder she was not talking. She was totally pissed! At first I thought this was one hardcore old bird. Getting pissed at work. Nice! But then I looked at her feet. The cracks along the side of her shoes made it clear that she was no foreigner to standing at the scale weighing bags of fruit on a sunday as a woman having cleared fifty. So what I initially thought was bloody hilarious was, once again, sad as shit. I tried not to pass out from the fumes as the commented on the lichis. We had a quick conversation about how rewarding it can be to eat lichis (because of extra effort involved in getting the f*ckers peeled) and then we parted ways. I wondered about how hard it would be getting drunk at work. Probably not that...
Freshly Ground in Swaziland this weekend!!!
You know how much we love Swaziland – what an awesome place – and only 3 hours drive from Johannesburg… If you haven’t yet made plans for the weekend, what about going to hang out in the beautiful Malkerns valley and going to one of the most gorgeous venues in the Southern Hemisphere – House on Fire – to watch one of our favourite bands FRESHLY GROUND… you won’t regret it. In fact we …guarantee that you will have one of the best weekend’s yet 🙂 WASHA UMKHUKHU! The concert is on Saturday night, it’s only R80 or 80 Emalangeni in SD.
