Call for Jozi photo’s – snap away!

Put your money where your lens is… If you been snapping away at our gorgeous city and her people, here’s your chance to get your pics published. A publishing company is calling all photographers with a passion for Joburg to help them record the revival and rejuvenation of the city through a publication to appear early in 2006. Timed to capture and promote the new sen…se of optimism and pride manifest in this city, ‘The Passion Behind a City’ will include over 200 high quality photos that reflect the daily life, growth and renewal taking place in the greater Johannesburg area. “Joburg is pulsating with life and with unlimited optimism for the future – one in which all its peoples will participate. This is what we intend to capture in the book – with the help of some talented photographers,” says publisher Ken Preston of Affinity Publishing. Criteria used to select the material will include creativity and the extent to which it portrays the many landscapes and lifestyles of Joburg, including different communities and religions. There will for instance be a pictorial feature portraying 24 hours in Joburg. This will include not only famous landmarks and landmark brands, but also the life and character of the entire metropolitan area – from Midrand to Rosebank and Orange Farm, from the “far” east to the “wild” west. “We are looking for a wide selection of material, including commercial activity (eg, retail and business centres, city street scenes, traffic on the move), residential scenes (eg, different cultural communities), leisure activities (eg, major sporting and entertainment events), nature in the city (eg a thunderstorm over Joburg), and landmark features of the city. Photographers are welcome to include branded images, since brands are an inseparable part of the identity of the city,” says Preston. Photographers chosen to have their work featured will have a brief biography and contact details published in the book, and will receive 10 copies. They will be invited to display their work at a launch event. Photos can be submitted electronically to this email address initially in either high or low resolution. Please limit each picture to 1.5megs or less to avoid transmission problems. Alternatively, material can be submitted as 6×8 prints to Affinity Publishing, P O Box 672, Auckland Park,...

FRANCHISE – exploring the real joy of PAINTING

The 44 Stanley avenue creative hub is a fabulous place to while away a few hours – next time you’re there pop into FRANCHISE, just one of the fabulara art galleries in the hood. This week is the last week of the SURFACE exhibition which features paintings by some of our top young artists: Luan Nel, Virginia MacKenny, Moshekwa Langa, Doro…thee Kreutzfeldt, Trasi Henen and Themba Shibase. They take us away from digital and back to basics as they celebrate all the wonderful aspects of painting as a medium. In the current global market, where art and commodity appear inseperable, and the tendency is to migrate towards “surfaceless” digital media, there is an apparent resurgence in the popularity of painting. Painting is being re-examined and celebrated as a medium which consistently resonates as a vehicle for expressing contemporary issues. Perhaps this trend is partly attributable to its having grown the most comfortable with its object status. This group exhibition brings together the work of several South African artists to explore current attitudes to the medium. Works by Luan Nel, Virginia MacKenny, Moshekwa Langa, Dorothee Kreutzfeldt, Trasi Henen and Themba Shibase, form a dynamic and diverse group show. While there are varying degrees of figuration, abstraction and painterliness in this selection, these artists are less concerned with the formal delimitations of their work. The focus of this exhibition is the physical, conceptual, and social space explored by painting. The emphasis is on discovery and celebration of painting as the embodiment of surface.
