Be at the Cultural Revolution in Jozi city – 26 July

After a number of vague murmurings of “SOMETHING BIG” going down in the city on a cold Tuesday morning next week, we finally have some more meat on this gig and can tell you all about it – If you have nothing to do on Tuesday 26 July at 9:30am get to corner Simmonds and Main and prepare to have a rocking time – the Crazy Monkey boys will be there, lots of musical collaboration going on, bu…ilding abseiling, poetry, party, party, party DONT FORGET YOUR LIPGLOSS LOVIES, all of it is being filmed: Who’s Your Punk NOW????? It looks like this: A 25 metre SA flag draped from a skyscraper on the corner of Symmonds and Main street, downtown Johannesburg. The Time is 09:30 am, Tuesday 26 July. WHERE ARE YOU? You should be there to experience the unfolding of a youth culture project that everyone needs to be part of. At 09:30, the flag will be unfurled. Models dressed in Loxion Kulcha and Ghetto Star gear will abseil down the Y of our national flag to a platform several stories below where ska punk heroes Fuzigish will be playing with afro funk legend Sliq Angel and switching microphones with Julius Makweru of Y FM and his slam poets. While down below on street level Brendan Jack of Crazy Monkey will be giving foot skating lessons. Why? Because the cultural revolution has begun. Because the time is now. Because this kind of collaboration, of cross over, of cross pollination is a small sample of what we have to offer in SA and its time we all stood up and took notice! This is your notice, this is all the invitation you need. Don’t worry about whether you belong or not, just come on down and join in with us. When: Tuesday 26 July 2005 Time: 09:30 am Where: Cnr Symmonds and Main Who: Fuzigish, Sliq Angel, Loxion Kulcha, Ghetto star, Julius Makweru, Crazy Monkey, Motherland Come and hear and be heard as we demand that SA take notice of the cultural revolution that is happening under their noses. BAABA MAAL the legend is HERE!

BAABA MAAL is coming to South Africa – make sure to catch the “Nightingale’ in action… OppiKoppi Productions is proud to announce that the legendary Baaba Maal will be touring in South Africa during September and October 2005. This Senegal born singer will be appearing at some of South Africa’s benchmark Arts Festival during this period and will have a couple of normal… club performances as well. WHO IS BAABA MAAL? Baaba’s previous two releases Firin’ in Fouta and Nomad Soul earned critical acclaim worldwide, reinforcing his role as a seminal artist in the world music arena. With constant touring he has honed and enriched an already phenomenal stage show. Touring nearly every continent including the West Indies, the overwhelming universal response has been utter awe. Aside from being a remarkable musician, Baaba is socially conscious and represents the United Nations Development Program as a spokesman on the issue of HIV/Aids in Africa. He has been featured on both Red Hot and Rhapsody, a tribute to Gershwin, and the forthcoming release, Red Hot and Riot a tribute to Fela Kuti, both projects put together by the HIV/Aids awareness campaign group, The Red Hot Organization. Music was an integral part of Baaba’s childhood as he grew up on the banks of the river Senegal. Born to the Hal Pulaar people, (known to the English speaking world as Fulani) his mother used songs she composed herself to educate and instill in him the value of intelligent and thoughtful lyrics. Technically speaking, he was not destined to become the master musician he is today by virtue of the fact that he was not born into the caste of artists and communicators known as Griots. Through time, travel and education, his experiences have resulted in profound self awareness allowing him to deliver the message of empowerment, enlightenment, and peace. His early edudcation in St. Louis (the original French colonial capital) lead him to win an art scholarship in Senegal’s modern capital, Dakar. There he joined Asly Fouta, a group of seventy musicians. Thus began his study of local instruments which he was later expanded through an extensive tour of West Africa with longtime friend, Mansour Seck. Going from village to village, they tapped the oldest person in each location to learn about the history of the village, the country and the music. The final leg of his studies were completed at the Conservatoire des Beaux Arts in Paris. Following his return to Senegal, he formed his band Daande Lenol “Voice Of The People.” Complementing his comprehension of traditional music, he was also influenced by black American singers of the 1960’s such as James...

First the Violent Femmes and now RODRIGUEZ… NO THE MAN IS NOT DEAD, he’s very much alive and he’s playing at the Bassline soon! Actually this won’t be the first time we lay eyes on Rodriguez, back in the day while lolling around a Splashy Fen jol, Just Jinger had a rocking performance where they… did their take on the song SUGARMAN. Half-way through the song the dreadlocked lead singer Art got us all in a frenzy as he told us that Rodriguez himself was in the house… Out “Rodriguez” stumbled onto the stage and kinda stood there looking … well… splashied – I remember feeling remotely confused as we’d heard he had died and he didnt do much singing at that point either. But I digress, if you missed that star-strucking opportunity, the man is back in Africa so get to Bassline this Thursday and sing along! Entries close Monday 14 Nov. MIDEM 2006: SA music labels and publishers invitation The 2005 MIDEM event was witness to a South African national unit for the very first time when the Moshito, the Department of Arts and Culture and the French Embassy of South Africa partnership fostered a huge national presence at the world music market.
