Soweto finally gets it’s own beach, sea and fun!
UPDATE So after a long warm-up, it’s that time at last – the Spiced Gold Summer Beach party on the 5th and 6th November in Orlando, Soweto as the Power Park dam gets transformed into a beach environmet -check it out: You know it’s going to be bikinis and beach sand when the sea comes to Soweto on the 5th and 6th of November. So grab the sun block and cancel the rest of your week…end, because the Spiced Gold Summer Spice Beach Party is taking over Power Park Dam in Orlando, and the heat’s going to hit way past boiling point. And it’s not just about the tonnes of beach sand, a range of taverns and activities like beach volleyball and soccer. The main attractions are going to be the medley of musicians who will be ensuring that the crowds get over 24 hours of music over the two-day party. These are the guys and gals who’ll be turning up the vibes, bringing on the moves and setting the sand flying as they blast out their eclectic range of pure African beats. The heat is on. The volume is up. Here’s who’s going to make sure that the party is official. Kicking off on Saturday are some of Mzansi’s top live acts and most popular DJ’s. SAMA award winning trio Malaika are on the bill, livening things up with their universally funky Afro sound. Fellow SAMA winner, actress and R ‘n B sensation KB is also in the house, ensuring that things stay silken, smooth and sexy. Then there’s MXO, the socially conscious voice of contemporary hip hop. Expect him to rip it up and bring the house down. Also appearing beach style is Sliq Angel, who soul-funk African inspired rhythms are sure to keep the party going. Kwaito sensations and platinum sellers Chippa and Mzambiya will keep the vibes hot as they deliver a power-packed performance. Then there’s Baphixile, the hip hop pioneers who will be keeping it real. The party will stay on a hip hop tip with Hidden Force, township narrators extraordinaire whose live act is nothing short of awesome. Rounding things off on the live side are Chomee, the young gal rapper with a twist in the tongue, Donald Duck the multi-talented producer who defies categorization and Psyfo, another young rapper with a big future. Taking the party from the live to vinyl are some seriously fine DJs. DJ Fresh is on the wheels of steel, bringing his Big Dawg sound to the Soweto beach. PLAYTIME FESTIVAL – 2 -3 Nov Newtown / Kliptown
Seems like having your offices in the city makes for ongoing city initiatives… I don’t know when last someone thanked the French Institute (and the Alliance Francaise) for all the hard work that they do to drive the arts, culture and city experiences for Joburgers – so THANK YOU guys – or as we say SHARPILE! IFAS – the French Institute – has got a fantastic fes…tival coming up at the beginning of November called PLAYTIME which is taking part in both Newtown and Soweto (Kliptown) – the aim of the festival is to remove the somtimes “exclusive” feel of arts and make it accessible to a wider audience. For more information click here. Here’s the scoop: The Playtime Festival 3 – 5 November Newtown, Johannesburg 6 November Kliptown, Soweto The Playtime Festival is simultaneously a celebration of the arts and of the spirit of the city. The festival plays host to a wide and varied range of events; photography, film, video art, dance, music and poetry. Every year is a little bit different and every year one gets to meet new artists and audiences. Originally Playtime was about getting audiences back into their city to enjoy the arts and culture that has always existed in Newtown. The positive and vibrant Newtown neighbourhood was overshadowed by the negative impression people had about the city. The Playtime Festival was, and still is, about inviting and encouraging audiences to come back into the city and see for themselves that it is an exciting nucleus of art and culture. It is about establishing a network within Newtown of likeminded enthusiasts to promote the different venues and talents that make up the diverse community. Playtime has always striven to be a family event where people can get together outdoors. It is accessible to everyone either for free or for a minimal charge. We have arranged something for everyone, but the heart of the festival life is the outdoor cinema where audiences can really feel part of the city and not simply racing from one enclosed venue to another. Our mandate is to not only to bring French or Francophone artists to South Africa but also to enable a synergy and exchange between artists that often continues long after the festival in the form of constructive and ongoing collaborations. This is where the idea of the Pan-African platform for artistic endeavors really started to take flight. We are taking art and performances out of the galleries and theatres and bringing it to a wider audience. The Playtime Festival is against artistic exclusivity; we aim to make contemporary culture available to everyone. SCHEDULE FOR PLAYTIME...
Telkom or Hong Kong – what a choice.
Thanks to BOB for this info – always out there and free to express. This picture courtesy hellob’s photo’s on Flickr – click here to see more on Hong Kong. This is taken from MyADSL Forums – thanks to these guys for always fighting for better connections. … We all know that Telkom has ridiculously high telecoms charges – that’s no secret. But whenever a comparison is made to other countries, Telkom has a tantrum like a spoilt child stating that it’s unfair to compare South Africa to other countries. I decided to do a little comparison to show how expensive it really is… so here are the results of the investigation. I compared the time and costs involved in downloading 100GB of data over Telkom’s fastest ADSL offering (1Mbps) with the time and costs involved in flying to Hong Kong, visiting an Internet cafý, downloading 100GB of data at their fastest speed (1Gbps), and flying back. Yep… that’s quite a challenge! And here are the details: Telkom Line speed = 1Mbps Download Size = 100GB Estimated Download Time = 9.5 days ISP (34 x 3GB accounts @ R269) = R 9,146.00 Line Rental (ADSL) = R 680.00 Line Rental (Residential Voice) = R 92.28 TOTAL = R 9,918.28 Hong Kong Line speed = 1Gbps Download Size = 100GB Estimated Download Time = 13 minutes Flight (SAA) = R 7,942.00 Internet Cafý (average cost @ HKD20) = R 17.43 TOTAL = R 7,959.43 Difference: Hong Kong is cheaper by R 1,958.85 So to sum up… it’s cheaper and quicker to fly to Hong Kong if you want to download 100GB of data! I haven’t got the time to work out where the two converge, but it just shows how badly we’re being ripped...
