Loyiso Gola Takes on The Tesson Theatre as One Man
This guy is getting funnier and funnier over the last two years that we have been watching him – he has worked hard and looks to be one big-time funny guy in the near future – Loyiso’s lines are original, provocative and in no way cliched – he has that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that is hard to find for some. His one-man show is on for one-night only – catch him. … I Am Frank Monday 8 August 2005 sees Loyiso Gola taking a ground breaking and dynamic step: He will become the youngest, black comedian to stage a one-man theatre show in South Africa when he unleashes his show, ‘I Am Frank’ for one night only at The Tesson Theatre at the Civic in Johannesburg. Gola is a well known face on the local comedy scene. He has appeared on SABC 3’s Comedy Showcase and the Pure Monate Show, as well as MC-ing the Metro Awards and appearing at the Blacks Only and Blackout Festivals. “This show is an opportunity for me to explore material that short slots and corporate gigs don’t often allow me to explore,” comments Gola of ‘I Am Frank’, “This is a good way for me to really run with some of the ideas I have and develop them to their logical conclusion.” “The thinking man’s Kofi Anan, the lighter side of Dark,” responds John Vlismas of Whacked management, in description of Gola, “Loyiso has an uncompromising sense of humour and his social commentary is provocative. He later moved to Cape Town after studying Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch where he graduated in 1987 with a cum laude distinction in graphic design and illustration. He then pursued a career in fashion design designing mainly mens wear and this is where he developed his passion for fashion illustration and figure study of the male physique. These dynamics of his career and background led to this current exhibition which is a celebration of the male body in it’s different facets, expressed mainly in acrylic on canvas.
