A group of friends growing up in the suburbs of Newlands East in Durban, Juvenile 031 first got together in 1997. The name of their outfit is quite appropriate – “Juvenile” representing their youth and “031” the dialling code for Durban. In the early days, these talented performers would go out and buy Puff Daddy and Mase instrumentals and use them to do gigs in and around town, performing at clubs, schools and charity fairs. Known for their cool clothes and even cooler lyrics, it wasn’t long before they built up quite a following in the “East”. They have also appeared on the main stages of the Splashy Fen Music Festival for the last three years in a row. Juvenile 031 consists of Prince “Prinston” Zondo and Melchuan “Mel-Capone” Barends, with Mel-Capone and Prinston writing most of their lyrics. While these guys are totally dedicated to their music, there’s still plenty of time in their lives for other interests. For instance, Mel-Capone has done two years in speech and drama at UDW and Prinston three years in IT at Oval International College. Priding themselves on “nothing but the tightest flow, fattest beats, and flyest gear”, Juvenile 031’s hit tracks include City Without Pity, Unfamous and BumpMyShit, which is soon to be released on their debut album “The Pension Plan”. Their track (Juvenile in me), which is “strictly for the ladies”, featured on the C-Weed Three compilation in 2003....

Brought to you by BIG Concerts, the SA tour kicks off on the 12th of July in Johannesburg, before grooving down to the Mother City on the 10th, and to Durban on the of 16th of August 2005. A synthesis between modern-academic dance and hip-hop creates an inventive new way of dealing with hip-hop dance. “BOUNCE is a smashing, entertaining and amazingly brilliant show, that incorporates an exciting array of dance styles, combining Breaking and Popping with Swing, Tap and Boogaloo, in a unique production set to a pulsating soundtrack of music including Hip Hop, Jazz and Rap. The stage of Bounce looks like an urban adaption to the successful set of West Side Story, with ghetto architecture. The dance is mixed with rap from a DJ and a human beat-box, and shows the history and culture of hip-hop in a nutshell. Funk, jazz, nightclub dance, John Travolta disco soul from the 70’s, the first raps of Grandmaster Flash, and the MC Hammer dance: the black street culture in a free associative form. The 15 dancers can perform all styles like popping, locking, b-boying or the boogaloo in a breathtaking way. Limbs go every way and in unexpected directions, the un-logic of the human body is visualized. HIP HOP This term refers to the culture itself. It’s not something you do, it’s a way of life! There are 7 elements of hip-hop: MC, DJ, graffiti, locking, popping, breaking and beat boxing. LOCKING This style was developed on the west coast of America by Don Camballock and his fabulous lockers, and was a forerunner to hip hop. It is best described as playful, with over- exaggerated gestures and explicit, distinct movements. POPPING This dance came from the US west coast. Loyiso Gola Takes on The Tesson Theatre as One Man
This guy is getting funnier and funnier over the last two years that we have been watching him – he has worked hard and looks to be one big-time funny guy in the near future – Loyiso’s lines are original, provocative and in no way cliched – he has that certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ that is hard to find for some. His one-man show is on for one-night only – catch him. … I Am Frank Monday 8 August 2005 sees Loyiso Gola taking a ground breaking and dynamic step: He will become the youngest, black comedian to stage a one-man theatre show in South Africa when he unleashes his show, ‘I Am Frank’ for one night only at The Tesson Theatre at the Civic in Johannesburg. Gola is a well known face on the local comedy scene. He has appeared on SABC 3’s Comedy Showcase and the Pure Monate Show, as well as MC-ing the Metro Awards and appearing at the Blacks Only and Blackout Festivals. “This show is an opportunity for me to explore material that short slots and corporate gigs don’t often allow me to explore,” comments Gola of ‘I Am Frank’, “This is a good way for me to really run with some of the ideas I have and develop them to their logical conclusion.” “The thinking man’s Kofi Anan, the lighter side of Dark,” responds John Vlismas of Whacked management, in description of Gola, “Loyiso has an uncompromising sense of humour and his social commentary is provocative.
