03/09 – 31/10 :: DAVID GOLDBLATT – new and rarely-seen

The Goodman Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new and rarely seen works by David Goldblatt. The opening of the show will take place on Saturday 3rd September 2005. The gallery will have extended hours on this day, from 09h30 – 17h00. Please join us for a drink at noon. David Goldblatt is renowned for his documentation of the progress of societal changes and… how these impact on the landscape and South African communities. His body of work will consist of stark landscapes shot in the Northern Cape, the impact of AIDS in various communities as well as the increasing roadside memorial sites that one encounters when driving through several landscapes in South Africa. Goldblatt will also be exhibiting portrait photographs of municipal officials. An established photographer Goldblatt has always interacted immensely with the subjects of his photographs. In a documentary (“On the Road”, Produced by Greg Marinovich) recently flighted on SABC, Goldblatt revisited people he photographed in the 70’s and spoke quite earnestly about these interactions reflecting that language has been the only barrier in communicating. The exhibition closes on Saturday 1st October 2005....

07/09 :: Deluge of SA content @ Animation Xchange

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW VENUE – IT IS NOT AT WITS THIS MONTH!!! Animation Xchange Joburg is on Wednesday 7 September and Touchvision have kindly offered to host the get-together for them. There’s a deluge of South African content that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy… We will have feedback on SIGGRAPH from the Touchvision team and Brian Goodwin, some work bei…ng presented by Nick Gordon, Ministry of Illusion and David Felix, and finally after much haggling and arm-twisting, Brian has also obtained the Oscar-winning short film ‘Ryan’ for our viewing pleasure. And as if that wasn’t enough, Touchvision will be giving a brief preview of 3DS Max 8, and handing out free trial versions of Max and Combustion! So don’t go to Wits on Wednesday 7 September! You could, but you’d probably be quite lonely and not see much animation. Touchvision’s address is (click the address for a map): 3rd Floor Standard Bank Centre 304 Oak Avenue Ferndale Randburg or email....

13/09 :: RICHARD SMITH exhibition @ CONHILL

Best known for his political satire, Smith began his career as a cartoonist for the Sunday Times in 1966 and served as curator for the inaugural Brett Kebble Art Awards, the country’s largest visual art award. His CV includes a host of solo and group shows both locally and internationally. ‘Dialogues’, an exhibition of recent works by Richard Smith celebrates a collaboration betw…een Artspace and Constitution Hill. This body of work was produced by the artist during a period of 18 months of near seclusion in the artist’s home in Onrus. ‘The only people to have seen these works are those that have visited my studio over the past year…’ Smith commented, ‘This is a completely fresh collection of work’. The exhibition comprises mainly large portraits of real people and smaller portraits of imagined people. Smith uses mixed media on Fabriano paper. Central to this exhibition is the theme of dialogue and communication, both as a means of hope and a source of tension. The work explores conflict, communication and exchange between the past and the present, between the people depicted and the visual elements within the works. Venue: The Temporary Exhibition Space, The Old Fort Date: 13 September – 2 October Walkabouts with the artist on Sunday 17th Sept Constitution Hill Sam Hancock Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg Tel: (011) 381 3100 Tel: (011) 381 3108 Email: taryn@ochre.co.za Hours: Mon-Sat 9am-5pm...
