Have you heard of DIM SUM? It’s the new Sushi…

We love hearing and then learning about new buzz words and trends – so yet again we fill you in on the coolest most recent word and trend to buzz around in our global radar. It’s DIM SUM – the latest food frenzy all over the world. On tap in Cyrildene and Bruma. And just when you’d started to finally enjoy SUSHI! DIM SUM is CHINESE food with an interesting history : “The cust…om of tea drinking in China dates back to the legendary Shen Nung, who is said to have personally tried hundreds of grasses and herbs to test their medicinal effects and toxicity. Tea was a popular drink by the Sung Dynasty (960-1280 A.D.), and gradually, innovations in the tea drinking custom were introduced. In addition to a high level of connoisseurship of the various types of teas and improvements in the quality of tea leaves, a broad variety of accompaniments to tea drinking began to appear – dim sum. In China’s ancient agricultural society, people would often head for a tea house after an exhausting day in the fields. Here they would mix warm conversation with fine tea and a tantalizing selection of dim sum. The quantity of each was kept small-the delicacies were served in tiers of bamboo steamers or small to medium-sized plates-so that many different varieties could be sampled. This custom has continued up through present day. ” {www.dimsum.com) One of the most endearing things about dim sum, besides its exquisite taste combinations, is the infinitesimal scale: this is not just finger food, but fairy food, and it takes years of training to perfect. It’s highly labour-intensive and a chef has to show aptitude and artistry for this kind of work. [Iafrica.com] Head on down to BRUMA and CYRILDENE – our new CHINATOWN – and try out DIM SUM. Let us know what you think! THE BBC fills us in on DIM SUM in the UK and around the world: Dim Sum, meaning literally, ‘touch your heart’, is a Chinese cuisine that has several things in common with Sushi: it’s oriental, it’s reasonably good for you, it’s tasty, and it’s modular. Unlike Sushi, it’s almost always cooked. Although it’s a Chinese cuisine, Dim Sum is seldom found in what are usually termed ‘Chinese’ Restaurants. Instead, Dim Sum is served in special Dim Sum restaurants, which can be found in most major cities in the world with a significant Chinese population concentrated in one area. What is Dim Sum? When you enter a Dim Sum restaurant, you will first wait in line for a table. This seems to be true no matter what time...

KAIZER CHIEFS – who are these cheeky boys?

KAIZER CHIEFS – who are these cheeky boys?

Have you heard about the cheeky UK Punk/Rock band that have named themselves after our very own Amakhosi??? They’re making huge waves in Europe – find out all about them here: Sometimes the greatest success stories sprout from the tiniest of ambitions. When Kaiser Chiefs formed up in notso-sunny Leeds, England around the summer of 2003, their aim was not to conquer stadiums and… change the world. Instead, these five oddballs began plotting a rather more modest plan. In the shadowy corners of clubs and venues across the city Ricky Wilson (lead vocals, owner of stylish blue and orange suit), Andrew “Whitey” White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Nick “Peanut” Baines (keyboards and modeller of impressive pork-pie hats) and Nick Hodgson (drums and vocals) decided to form a band that would harness the awesome capability of being able to, erm, blag an early slot at their hometown Leeds Festival. Impressive, eh? They achieved it without breaking sweat, naturally, but with it came a whole lot more. 18 months down the line and the boys have gatecrashed the UK singles charts, laid waste to huge crowds as far away as Moscow, played triumphant support slots with Franz Ferdinand, made waves at US radio and signed to Universal Records. Kaisers’ story actually begins some time before they’d decided to name themselves after a successful South African football team. School friends Simon, Peanut and Nick had been playing together in various bands since the age of 15 before spying art school graduate and restless-ball-of-energy, Ricky singing with a Rolling Stones tribute band. Initially Ricky refused their invitation to join the ranks, but eventually he relented. “I don’t know why,” laughs Nick. “We didn’t have any songs at the time.” Of course, being at the core of the UK’s most vibrant local music scene made the band realize they had to raise their game musically. And so, after a particularly heated crisis meeting, they agreed that if they were ever to secure that Leeds Festival spot, they had to start afresh. They rapidly went about changing everything, which meant a new name (“It was the only one suggested that we didn’t all hate”) and ditching all their old songs. “It was like seeing the light,” says Ricky. “We’d been trying so hard to fit in that we’d lost sight of what we were best at – not fitting in.” “Not fitting in,” it seems, involved crafting world-beating pop songs about looter-filled city streets at closing time and relationships-gone-wonky. Songs that could only have been written by observing the peculiarities of life in Northern England, and songs that sparkled with the sound of Madness and...

Joburg to become a WIRELESS ADSL HOTSPOT – YAY!

Just when we were about to ask how come Joburg CIty is not a WIFI hotspot we hear that it may be on the books… You have to love this city and it’s passionate leaders, pushing it ahead and keeping it up to date with worldwide technology. “What’s a WIFI hotspot?” you may ask… In our words – it’s an area where internet access is offered to those with wireless enabled computers… and other techie machines. The area is called a “HOTSPOT“. There are already cities around the world that offer this service for free to their citizens – At the moment you can have FREE WIFI access at most NEWSCAFE’s in South Africa and at the airport. So you take your laptop there for a meeting and you can surf the net or download your emails without being fixed to your desktop. Now it looks like the whole of Joburg may become a HOTSPOT if the Techies have their way. We love that. THe only thing that isn’t clear is if this will be a free initiative or will one have to subscribe???It’s not clear… can anyone enlighten us? You can refer to the brilliant source WIKIPEDIA (the peoples free encyclopedia) for the correct definitions and more detail on WIFI. Here’s the scoop courtesy of MYADSL: The City of Johannesburg’s Economic Development Unit in conjunction with BMI TechKnowledge Group held a series of workshops last week to discuss a broadband strategy for Johannesburg. Role players from all interested fields including MyADSL, Johannesburg Area Wireless Users Group (JAWUG), Telkom, the SNO, Vodacom, various ISP’s and others were invited to provide input regarding the development of Johannesburg as a broadband enabled “Smart City”. Johannesburg is a hub of economic activity in South Africa with 74% of all corporate head offices, 59% of I.T. enterprises and a large majority of accounting; legal and media firms based in the City. The City of Joburg’s contribution to the national economy is almost 16%. The City’s Economic Development Unit has had the great foresight to acknowledge the need for a comprehensive and sustainable broadband initiative for Joburg in order to further stimulate economic growth. Whilst this project is still in the discussion phase the aim of these workshops was to pool together ideas and views in order to develop a sustainable broadband initiative for the City of Johannesburg to implement before 2010 and to continue towards their 2030 Vision. Roelf Diedericks, a representative from JAWUG, raised concerns regarding legislation and regulations on WiFi. He addressed many valuable issues turning the spotlight on developing a competitive internet access environment. An interesting development on the international...

LOOKING FOR SOME MEANING? FIND IT AT ASTRO.com

GENERALISTA directs us to the stars for answers to earthly situations… She reckons it comes pretty close and looks forward to the SECOND half of ’05 – check it out and see if it works for you… I have found the answer! Or rather, answers. Since January, when it first became evident that 2005 was certainly not going to be “Two thousand and thrive” for this jinxed sista, I have …been looking for some kind of explanation as to how so much can possibly go so wrong for just one person in 5 short months. And then someone had the sense to suggest that I turn to astro.com. If you haven’t logged on already and are looking for answers, or at least a bloody good insight into the various elements of your life (love, work, home, friends), then this is the place you’ll find it. Honest. Now, I’ll admit that I have always been drawn to the psychic world in various shapes and forms, but I am not a fool and I challenge any sceptic or non-believer to type www.astro.com into their search bar and not find something out about themselves that they didn’t know before; something that they also immediately recognize to be true. Scarily so. Astro.com is the most successful astrology source online. Run by a small Swiss company that has been developing and selling horoscopes for 20 years, the site itself is based on a computer software programme developed precisely for horoscope calculation by computer whiz Alois Treindl and Liz Greene – a name that anyone who knows anything about astrology and horoscopes will recognize immediately. The challenge, of course, was to enable a computer to make expert and specific astrological interpretations of a person’s personality and problematic issues based on hundreds of different factors, depending on the individual logging on. It sounds impossible I know. But the knowledge based system they’ve ended up with works. Try it. In fact, in my opinion, it works with such expert precision that you’ll be hooked immediately. Guaranteed. Of course, the site has been set up as an e-business and the ultimate aim is to get you to buy the full, 30+ page versions of what you only get a “preview” of on the site. But the previews, some of which are more than 10 pages long, provide enough insights and answers in themselves and certainly gave me more than enough food for thought. “Gratis” from the site, you can read your horoscope every day, get a personal portrait (and discover what makes you tick), find out everything you ever wanted to know about your partner and the how’s...
