BUMPER MOVIE CLUB THIS WEDNESDAY @ ATLAS
Apple Park presents Film Club – Represent loves it and encourages all movie lovers to go – it’s a really down-to-earth, relaxed atmosphere where u can grab a boerie roll, a dop and watch some great flieks. This Wednesday night the 22nd we have a large line up for you at Atlas Studios. 8:00pm we kick off with “before tv” a beauti…ful little 12 minuter directed by Stacey Sacks about her father. 8:15pm we showing “decision makers” a film about 4 youngsters who run away from home and end up living in the streets of Johannesburg. Life in the city is not as great as they thought and they get caught up robbing, sniffing and eating out of dumpsters for survival – but one day a special woman comes into their lives. 8:30pm we have the bizarre “bakgat copshop” a celebration of political changes and a satirical glance back into the madness we’ve left behind. It’s a saga about a demented policeman, a moffie, a rasta, a news crew, a drug deal gone horribly wrong, “heath” donuts with “herbs”, a hit man, a “HOT” half naked hypnotised woman (yes, all in one 26min story) and a doctor who survives a car bomb. 9:00pm is Q&A with the directors & producers of the shorts and a smoke break. 9:30pm we finish you off with “definition of freedom” a documentary about how hip-hop has become the new weapon to challenge status quo. We go back to the 80’s when a movement was born that reflected the harsh and violent realities of ghetto youths in living in South Africa and how with the use of hip hop they rebelled against the oppressive apartheid regime. This will be followed by Q&A with director Kurt Orderson and then it’s bed time thanks for coming. Take note of our new and permanent email address filmclub@mailbox.co.za and feel free to email us any time. WHAT’S THE MOVIE CLUB ABOUT? Johannesburg has a large television and film industry and yet there is no independent cinema in the city. We feel that our fledgling yet promising film industry needs a space where film makers and connoisseurs of film can get together to share ideas and network in a relaxed environment. John Barker, Ziggy Hofmeyer, Apple Park Films, The Pure Monate Show team (Virtual Productions) & Atlas Studios now screen movies, doccies, shorts etc every second week!! (please forward your details for regular info) Our aim is to create a venue where South African independent film makers can showcase their films and get constructive feed back from a knowledgeable audience. Feel a sister!!!
What do you do when you have a whole lot to say and no where to say it? Self-publish your work, of course. Some of our poets have taken a cue from artist and publisher Aryan Kaganoff, who insists that writers should rather strive to publish and thus own their work, instead of relying on big-name publishers to get their word out. The latest poet to join the long list of wordsmits… who have publish their work is Chico Gondwe, who will be lauching her album and poetry book tomorrow night at the Horror Cafe in Newtown. Respect. The launch will be followed by the cafe’s weekly African Storm session, with DJs Admiral and Jah Seed dishing out the best of commercial ragga and dancehall....
FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL OF FIRST FILMS
Cinema Nouveau showcases a NEW FILMAKERS FESTIVAL of FRENCH FILM this week until the 23 June. For a bit of background and to see which one looks like your cup of tea, go to Alliance Francais. Since 2002, approximately 40% of the yearly French film production has been made up of first films. Every year, more t…han 60 of the new feature films are first films! This illustrates the good health, rich diversity and strong vitality of French cinema. It is a source of talent which never ceases to flourish. In the world, French cinema has gained recognition because of blockbusters such as “Amýlie” and “Asterix”, or because of world famous directors such as Luc Besson or actors like Gýrard Depardieu, Juliette Binoche or Jean Reno. Generation after generation, from Gýrard Philippe to Vincent Perez, French cinema has succeeded throughout the world in satisfying audience’s hunger for new talents and emerging stars. For this reason, it is important to constantly discover tomorrow’s talents, bring them to light and encourage appreciation beyond our frontiers. The French Embassy in South Africa is proud to bring this selection of 6 first films to South Africa. Each has its own style, ambition and approach, ranging from family to art films, and from reality to comedy. It is also a selection that respects, albeit unintentionally, male/female parity. Johannesburg Rosebank Mall 10 June – 23 June 2005 Cinema Nouveau...
