Represent Recommends: La Traviata
Our very fabulous world traveller, in-house dancer, choreographer and sometime therapist (yeah, we’ve got a biiiig colourful family at Represent and lots of talent!) went to spend some time at the La Traviata open-day rehearsals – she was inspired and loved every minute of it, convinced to get her tutu back on. Elmarie gives you LOTS of reasons why you MUST go to the Ballet in 2008 and specifically to La Traviata by the South African Ballet Theatre, dates and details provided below. Sharpile Elms! (PS – How awesome is that rehearsal studio? I wanna dance there!) “Get high on dance! To say ballet is a dying art form is completely inaccurate! The South African Ballet Theatre company is very much alive. In disbelief? My advice is that you get yourself to their newest performance ‘La Traviata’ opening 15 August. I recently had the privilege of attending an open day rehearsal at their magnificent studios in Jozi; it was uplifting to say the very least. Once again, I felt extremely proud of our South African talent. So! For some divine inspiration treat your mind to a night at the ballet. No one’s asking you to wear the tights, simply turn off the tele’ and indulge in a truly beautiful mood-altering experience. If you’re interested in seeing a perfect machine reveal its existence of a soul then you owe it to yourself to see this dynamic company perform La Traviata. And remember, Live a lot!” www.saballettheatre.co.za FNB’s La Traviata – The Ballet The Nelson Mandela Stage At The Johannesburg Civic Theatre 15 August – 7 September 2008 A ballet in three Acts With The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Allan Stephenson Twenty two performances of FNB’s La Traviata – the Ballet choreographed by Veronica Paeper. An exquisite story ballet based on the famous opera ‘La Traviata” La Traviata is Cape Town based choreographer Veronica Paeper’s ballet translation of the Verdi opera of the same name. Based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, it tells the story of a Parisian courtesan who unexpectedly finds herself in love and loved in the midst of a cynical and frivolous life among the demi-monde of Paris. But it is a love that is destined soon to be shattered on the shoals of family duty and mortal illness. The score is drawn from Verdi’s exquisite opera, especially arranged for ballet. Regarded as one of Paeper’s finest works, La Traviata brings to the stage the tragic story of a dying woman’s last love. Hello Lionel, is it me you’re looking for ???
Everyone has their soft spot. For some, it’s chocolate, for others, it’s Madonna (what???). For us, it’s Lionel. Anyone that’s a friend of Editorista will know how she and certain friends get all soppy and soft when the legendary Lionel’s voice comes on the radio, although it’s usually being played off an ipod or cd as being such fans, they have the entire collection. So she just wanted to remind you of how you MUST MUST MUST go to his concert when Lionel graces our shores in November… SCREAM…… Do it to me one more time! BIG Concerts are thrilled to announce that one of the most prolific hitmakers, Lionel Richie will tour South Africa in November this year. The highly anticipated tour, presented by 94.7 Highveld Stereo, will play ABSA Stadium in Durban on the 25th of November, and 28th November the Coca Cola Dome, Johannesburg. Lionel Richie has set aside the 22nd November 2008 to perform in Cape Town, the details of which will be released in due course. “Lionel Richie is a popular music artist featured on 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s playlist. His song, ‘I Call It Love’ has proved particularly popular among our listeners, as have a number of other hits he has produced over the years,” said 94.7 Station Manager Ravi Naidoo. “The fact that he’s coming to South Africa to perform is truly amazing and we’re honoured to be a partner to this tour.” “Simplicity,” Lionel Richie explains, “is the key to what I do.” These are surprising, even shocking, words from an artist whose achievements, creatively and commercially… have been anything but simple. Lionel Richie is, after all, one of the world’s most recognized and rewarded performers. He’s sold nearly 100 million albums and is the biggest selling RnB artists in South Africa with over 1 million records sold, notching up twenty-two Top 10 singles, including legendary hits such All Night Long, Dancin’ on the Ceiling, Hello and the Commodores’ Brickhouse, Easy, and Zoom. Among the many awards that grace his shelves, the collection includes five Grammy Awards, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and not to mention piles of American Music and People’s Choice awards. “I want to find the simplest phrase that everybody says, no matter what language you speak.” Richie’s perspective is a product of nearly four decades of making music, since he co-founded the Commodores in 1967 at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. Signed in 1971 to Motown, The Commodores became one of America’s most popular bands by the mid-’70s. Richie began stepping outside the Commodores after producing Kenny Roger’s album “Share Your Love” in 1981, which spawned the hit “Lady”....
Sipho Gumede stage @ Oppikoppi
It’s never to late to join in the fun, if you still don’t have plans this weekend, get in your cars and drive to the beautiful North West Province to the Oppikoppi festival and get down at the SIPHO GUMEDE stage this year. They have a jam-packed line up just waiting for you to forget all our your city ills, including of course our favourite DJ Kenzhero and the Party People interlude. Represent! Way back in 1997, when most of us OppiKoppi buffs were still laaities, the Allan brothers were cordially invited to play broken beats and Elvis tunes from the roof of the Gito Baloi stage; The following year, the boys invited even more wayward DJ friends and musicians and annexed an old ossewa to serve as a stage, on a hill far away from the madding crowd and rock-fuelled masses. Fast forward to the present and said stage, affectionately known as the 206 stage, has morphed into the “Sipho Gumede Mein Stage”, which has become a force of note(s) at the festival, and certainly a harbinger of breaking (!) and exciting acts every year. With each passing year, the stage and the lineup has grown and diversified, and so too the crowd, allowing us the headspace for oodles of experimentation and trialing. As has become expected of our motley crew, we have added some new dimensions to the stage we like to call home for one weekend a year: VJ Little Nicky joins us this year, as we have finally added a big screen to the area. The visual imagery is sure to add to the patina of this all ready swinging stage. A permanent bar next to the stage helps when you are dancing and don’t have the energy or inclination to negotiate the obstacle course up the hill and to the bar. Kwani Experience bring us their home-cooking skills once again with an all-weekend pap & vleis Cook-off. Remember to eat. hris will be serving vegetarian food alongside the kasi’s. Comedians Ntosh Madlingozi, Zee the Protégé and Trevor Gumbi join us in “The Dysfunctional Revolution” on Saturday afternoon. Tosh Madlingozi then goes on to Host the Party People lineup on Saturday night. Add to this the amalgamation of bands, dj’s, turntablists, sound and lighting crew, mc’s and tequila drinkers doing their best to include both musical genres known to man, 24 hours a day, and you undoubtedly find yourself with a recipe for 48 hours of total abandon and revelry. On Friday night the 8th, as is the custom, Blunted Stuntman hosts “Yo-Yo” with cutting edge breaks acts alongside live acts such as Tasha Baxter,...
