BE AT ATLAS STUDIOS EVERY SECOND WED NIGHT
In 2004 John Barker and friends kicked off an underground movie club with the aim of exposing local and non-mainstream movies to those looking for something different. They were cool evenings held at 44 Stanley where debate and drinking were on the menu after each session… if I can remember correctly. We got to check kiff flieks like elolipop, DogTown and Z boys and up-and-coming work from the film school including Soldiers of the Rock, while lounging around on borrowed couches. The boys kick off 2005 with a change in venue to the trend-setting Atlas Studios, in Milpark, where weather dependent, the films will be screened in the open-air or inside the venue like a normal fliek.
But there’s nothing normal about John and friends – they are extraodinary guys with a zealous passion to push the film industry… you will be entertained! Make sure to watch this space for updates on when the films will be shown. ‘Apple Park films’ aka John and friends kicked off the screenings on the 16th February – if u missed that make sure you book out every second Wed from the 16th onwards.
What’s it about?
Johannesburg has a large television and film industry and yet there is no independent cinema in the city. We feel that our fledgling yet promising film industry needs a space where film makers and connoisseurs of film can get together to share ideas and network in a relaxed environment. Atlas studios on a Wednesday night is the perfect location.
Our aim is to create a venue where South African independent film makers can showcase their films and get constructive feed back from a knowledgeable audience. We will screen international independent films but our main focus is developing the local industry and eventually the Wednesday night movie club will have a distinct local feel. We encourage all young and young at heart, South African film makers to send your Short films, animation, stop motion, documentary and features to the address below. Ultimately we want to create our own Johannesburg independent film festival. Depending on the amount of projects we receive this year this festival could be a reality in 2006.
We invite you to join us on Wednesday nights at Atlas Studios and look forward to your support. John Barker barkerj@mweb.co.za. Ziggy Hofmeyr daziggy@webmail.co.za
