Splashy Fen 2007, more comfy than ever before!
If you’ve not yet made plans for the Easter long weekend, then why not head off to the Southern Drakensberg for the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival from 5 to 9 April. Aside from the great music, with performances by over 70 of the country’s hottest established and up-and-coming artists, there’s also a host of other fun activities to keep you entertained while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. We are giving away *two double tickets*… The most magical and appealing aspects of what is regarded by many as the ‘ultimate outdoor experience’ have always included a tent pitched under the stars and nights around the campfire meeting new, interesting people. This is a big part of what Splashy Fen is all about and festival-goers at this year’s gathering will be totally spoiled for choice when deciding on sleeping arrangements, because facilities are even better and the range of options even wider – four new developments in addition to the already-improved camping sites, hot showers and fragrant loos. Family Campsite First up and in keeping with the emergence of Splashy Fen as a fun-for-all-ages music festival is a cordoned-off family campsite close to the children’s marquee and entertainment zone run by the Ocean View Montessori School. The appeal of this innovation is obvious, and although it will carry a R30 per vehicle surcharge (payable on arrival), it must be remembered that festival admission for Under 12s is free. Demand for this first-come, first-sited convenience is bound to be high, so anyone with a young family and wishing to take advantage of it would be well advised to arrive early. Tent Hotel The second new venture is a slice of semi-luxury in the form of a ‘tent hotel’ offering bed and breakfast plus separate ablution facilities. Each of the 100 spacious, high-quality and lockable tents will have either a double or two single beds complete with linen, but guests must bring their own warm coverings. Alternatively, sleeping bags may be hired at nominal extra cost. Breakfast will be served in the ‘hotel’ marquee, after which guests can make use of an around-the-clock outdoor cooking facility. The price for the entire long weekend from 5 to 9 April is R1 350 per person sharing, which includes festival entry. Bookings and special breakfast requests can be made at http://www.kreefhotel.co.za/. Homes-on-Wheels Yet another new option is the mobile accommodation offered by Rainbow 4X4 and Motorhome Rentals: air-conditioned vehicles fully fitted with fridge/freezer and stove, cooking and eating utensils, bedding, camping furniture and – in the bigger motorhomes – an onboard shower and toilet. A range of prestige vehicles is available at affordable rates...
TOKYO SHOPS – the wow factor unpacked
In Tokyo, it doesn’t matter whether you’re stepping into the marvellous MUJI – heralded for it’s reliable blandness in design, it’s mundane minimalism but unbendable quality – or the basic and bland Japanese clothing shop UNIQLO that not unlike Muji features simple lines and quality ‘plains’ desired throughout the world … – or if you’re wandering down the blinging Omote-Sando with the incredible architecture of designer shops Prada, Dior, Cartier, Chloe etc…. Maybe you’re at the Ueno fish market checking out some fresh salmon or wandering through the second hand stores in Harajuku – wherever you may be you’ll have to agree that the Japanese are experts at making their shops, shopfronts and their product displays utterly tempting and tasteful. Mwah! Check out our Tokyo pics of shops, shopping and displays right here. Don’t miss the breathe-taking Prada building photos especially the ones we managed to ‘sneaktake’ inside – note the fur covered railings! And by the way if ever you’re in London or Tokyo make sure you get to Muji and Uniqlo – two of Japan’s greatest exports! Whatever you buy will last you for a long long time even though it may look a little...

UNATHI moving to METRO FM – Good Luck Sis’wami.
Exactly a year ago some of Ye Old faithful Representers (we love you!) will remember the excitement around the lineup changes on 5FM, YFM and Metro… (We now realise that March is contract renewal month). Anyway – if you read further down the page you’ll be reminded of all the shuffling from our archives. Today it has been confirmed that a very good friend of ours UNATHI NKAYI will be moving from her beloved YFM to broadcasting stalwart METRO FM to join her man BadBoy T and her colleague Adil and the fabulous KG who are also migrating. We believe a change is as good as a holiday and that for both YFM and Unathi new challenges will bring positive growth. We’d like to wish them both lots of luck. We’ll miss Unathi’s caring sultry and calming voice, listening to her listeners stories no matter how mundane or long-winded. We thoroughly enjoyed her Top 10 moments and share many a fave song with her. But we also believe that her talent is not only in radio but in her magical singing voice and performing abilities and we will enjoy watching Unathi’s star continue to rise. Sis’wami – Good luck! Here’s the PR from BizCommunity that gives us the lowdown on Adil and KG’s move to Metro as well – what does this mean for the future of radio, a more hip and powerful Metro FM? Fresh sounds on YFM? We welcome the changes! Metro FM announces new additions While Metro FM’s new DJ line up will be detailed at an exclusive media and trade briefing next week Tuesday, 20 March 2007, the station revealed yesterday, Monday 12 March, that Unathi Nkayi, KG Moeketsi and Adil More will be joining the lineup as from 1 April. Nkayi currently presents ‘The Perfect Flow’ on YFM, while More is the presenter of AD@large on the same station. Moeketsi’s most recent position is as programme manager of P4 Durban, having previously presented breakfasts on Kaya FM.Says Matona Ntshona, Metro FM station manager, “We are absolutely delighted to announce that Unathi, Adil and KG are joining our team. All three are among the best radio talent the country has to offer and they will each add something unique to the station.” Details of Nkayi, Moeketsi and More’s responsibilities at Metro FM will be revealed on 20 March.Click here for the full article from BizCommunity ******************************************************* *******************************************************March 2006 This will surely be remembered as the year that radio as we have know it (and been entertained and bored by it) changed. We still haven’t yet seen the official press release on the lady we heard about … but here’s another move by another...

TOKYO FASHION – Alternative is the norm.
In the first of our features on Tokyo, Editorista tells us how she experienced the fashion and youth culture: So I’m back, jetlagged and luggageless – but I’m bubbling over with awesome stories from my sejour…The best way for me to explain what I experienced in Tokyo is to put it down as it went through my head – as a constant comparison to how we live here in South Africa and Joburg in particular. I can’t help it, I’m fascinated by how some places are so quirky and how they work so well – I believe that our emerging economy and developing country has a lot it can learn from others who lead the way. Don’t forget that Japan was devastated in the Second World War and that they have rebuilt their society since then… Their real period of urbanisation and social change and reinvention came about in the mid 60s and 70’s – only 20 years after the war and atomic bombs. We’re on year 12 of our journey – interesting comparison to start with… Anyway – I digress… As you may or may not know, Editorista set off for a week to Tokyo searching for trends and generally finding out what it is that makes Tokyo peeps rock as much as they do. “I was totally overwhelmed, inspired and humbled by the Japanese people and the glowing, pulsing, moving city of Tokyo and I encourage anybody who’s vaguely interested in the East to start saving now! Forget the usual suspects when it comes to travelling and make sure to head on to Japan! Even though I’ve never been to the US and I probably stand corrected, I imagine New York must pale in comparison to this futuristic streamlined metropolis that is TOKYO or Edo as it used to be known. It’s futuristic, organised, clean, mind-boggling and endless. Go GO HAMBANI!” (PS: I’m sorry the site was a little boring and ‘under-updated’ in my absence but I promise that the next few stories of our TOKYO feature will more then make up for it. Ncesi.) First up, FASHION and the YOUTH CULTURE. Wow. There’s definitely lots of similarities and coherence between the originality and creativity of Tokyo youth and Jozi youth and I often found myself feeling right ekasi. But there are lots of differences as well. For one, the unemployment level in Japan has reached a shocking “5%” which everyone is up in arms about. Hah Hah. Try our stats for size. This means that most of the youth are employed and therefore have disposable income and a guaranteed job no matter what their education or background – so they get to live it up and spend money on getting creative and trendy...
