BET has announced the nominations for the “BET Awards” 2014. Nominations were announced in 20 categories, selected by BET’s Voting Academy comprised of a group of respected entertainment professionals in the fields of television, film, music, social media, digital marketing, sports journalism, public relations, creative arts and fans. Getting to know DJ Zan-D
DJ Zan-D (Zandi Ngwenya) is a radio and television personality and has a weekly Thursday mix on YFM on their YTKO feature which he is doing now for the 3rd year. DJ Zan-D also appears weekly on television on Etv’s Club 808 show where he’s a Video Mix DJ (VJ) and mixes videos live on the show. Club 808 airs on Saturday’s at 18:30 to a viewership of over 2 million viewers weekly. Represent catches up with him to find out what makes him such a cool DJ. 1. Between TV and radio, which one would you say is your favourite medium? I love TV but it is quite challenging. On TV you need to be always on your best, looking good, smiling and there’s no room for mistakes. So I prefer radio because it’s a more relaxed medium and with radio I also get to launch or break new songs. 2. You’ve DJ’d at events with international acts such as the Kendrick Lamar concert, 2 Chainz, Wale and Keith Murray, how was that experience for you? That is one of the best experiences as a Dj mostly because in concerts like that you get to play for the biggest crowds and best stage, sound & equipment. My favourite out of all those concerts was the Keith Murray one. It is more special to me because I got to actually play for Keith Murray during his performance. 3. I always find DJ names fascinating, how did Zan-D come about? It actually took me 5 years to find a suitable Dj name. Before I used to just use my normal name Zandi. The one night I was sitting with a few of my friends and they were planning my first Club gig back in South Africa since my return from the UK so we decided to bounce heads in finding a name until the name Zan-D popped up and I liked it. 4. When did you start your career as a DJ? I was brought up in a musical background. My dad was a Dj. He owned sound systems and he would rent them out and play at those events. From owning sound systems, he then owned a Night Club called The Dukes Place in Vosloorus in the late 80’s. As young as I was then, I had to learn how to connect the sound systems and play at some of the events. Hansa Pilsener teams up with Kalawa Jazmee to celebrates 20 years of Dreamers, music and freedom. The beer brand that celebrates South Africa’s Dreamers and doers is gathering the cream of the local music industry for a concert marking the country’s 20 years of freedom. In partnership with record label Kalawa Jazmee and Metro FM. Kalawa Jazmee has been at the forefront of local music since the 1990s and will be marking 20 years of supporting various Dreamers that are now iconic acts in the country today. Artists taking the stage during the Dreamers Celebration include legendary Oskido, Thebe, Trompies, DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota DJ Zinhle, Uhuru, DJ Naves & Sphe, Fistaz, Lulo Café, and many more. “The artistic line-up embraces artists that have been shaking up the local music industry for the past 20 years, and is in collaboration with Kalawa Jazmee Records,” said Hansa Pilsener Marketing Manager Kelebogile Mashigo. “The collaboration between Hansa and Kalawa just made sense because what better way to mark both where we have come from and what the future holds for the country and its next generation of Dreamers, than a full day celebration?” Due to popular demand, the venue for the Hansa Pilsener Dreamer’s Celebration has changed to The Cultural Village, Power Park, Soweto. Bongeziwe Mabandla is more than just a singer…he’s the voice of the new generation
By Lebogang Mgiba He’s more than just a singer but an artist that uses his own voice to stand for what he believes in. For me, when it comes to music, there should be some emotions involved in order for me to get deep into it, otherwise there’s no point. I don’t mind listening to some ‘Ok” songs once in a while but I really appreciate artists that are story tellers and Bongeziwe is one of them. I was left in awe the first time I heard his debut album, UMLILO and wanted to find out more about him as an artist living in South Africa today. 1. You performed with Joss Stone when she was here in S.A, how did that come about? I got a call from a guy in Cape Town who was handling Joss Stone’s S.A tour concert and he told me she would like to do some cool things with South African artists. So I sent my music to him and he told me if she likes it, she will then invite me to do something with her. A week later I got a call saying Joss Stones really likes my music. Zahara and I did a performance at Balcony TV and second day we went to Soweto together which was nice and then she also invited me to Carnival City for her concert and we performed Isizathu together. 2. Interesting. How was the experience though? It was absolutely wonderful; Joss Stone is such a kind, warm and friendly person. I really like people like that. 3. How is your song writing process? I’m actually busy writing now and that’s why I got these musical instruments. This time I’m working with a band to kind of develop the song. It’s one of the things I didn’t have on the first album, UMLILO. I just did things, but I’m happy that it happened that way. With the first album, I didn’t really understand what I was doing. I wrote the songs in a guitar chilling in a studio and then they would be interpreted from there. Now I’m aware of what’s happening around me and I understand music more than I did when I was 24, making the first record. 4. What is Ndibonisiwe and Isizathu about? Let’s start with Ndibonisiwe. What I was trying to communicate was that, sometimes you can be in a situation that is not good and the song is about escaping and running away.
