Levi’s Young Guns goes Boxing
When last did you get your musical kicks in a boxing gym??? We’re giving you nearly a month’s notice about the Levi’s Young Guns event in July featuring the awesome Japan and I and The Kicks… Jozi’s getting colder and colder, except for the first floor of a corner in Norwood where, on Thursday the 24th of July, the heat’s going to be turned up until it reaches boiling point. This is not a fire warning, it’s an invitation to check out the next Levi’s® Young Guns show as it blazes into town, complete with two hot young acts that are going to let off some steam by going straight for the jugular. Japan and I are joined by The Kick in a Boxercising Gym for another evening of fierce rock and rolling. It’s another instalment in the infectious wildfire of independent music that’s been engulfing the country since the tour got started in May. Come get burned. In less than three years Japan and I have made an indelible mark on the local scene with an infectiously uncompromising approach to making music. They’ve put the grrr back into grrrl rock and continue to push boundaries with their indescribable, upbeat blend of ska, punk and do-wa-pee-do. Comprising of three high school friends who share a taste for musical deviance, stylish outfits and big performances, they’ve won hearts and blown minds with mesmerising live shows that combine up-tempo antics with exquisite compositions. Inspired by life, Japan and I have already made a global mark, winning an LA Music Award. But they’re most at home, at home. So don’t miss out on this opportunity to dance to a new sensation. The Kick are good. They’re better than television and UFOs, are violence and sex rolled into one and sound like life…and death. This manic foursome are 100 percent Jozi and totally original. Blessed with the rare ability to build crowds up and then tear them down with distorted guitars, screaming feedback and rich, dark writhing rhythms, they leave a trail of exhausted fans and post-party chaos wherever they perform. Theirs is a psychedelic mix of infectious grooves, blues rock fury and experimental jazz, all mashed together, mixed up and thrown back at ya with a fury and venom that will knock the hardest hardballs back. It’s a rough ride rocking with The Kick, but it’s so, so worth it. Date Thursday, 24 July Venue Boxercising Gym Address 1st floor (on top of Spar) Corner Grant and William Streets Norwood Time Doors open round 20:00 Price R20.00 Contact Annelie Hoffman @ 012 327 6601 / 6163 Tickets are available from the Levi’s®...
MTN DURBAN FASHION WEEK: Gavin Rajah
Yip, we’ve got this year’s MTN Fashion Week in Durban covered, so keep reading Represent for our updates as the excitement unfolds… Thanks to Aarif and Daniel for Representin’… Gavin Rajah – Irreplaceable CLICK HERE for our Fashion Week Flickr site to view some of our photo’s of the action. More to follow. Mademoiselle Coco Chanel once said that in order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different – a philosophy that couturier Gavin Rajah has fully embraced in his Spring/Summer collection unveiled in the 2008 MTN Durban Fashion Week. Aarif Saib was there to witness Mademoiselle’s philosophy taking form on the catwalk… The anticipation for Gavin Rajah’s collection has created an atmosphere of euphoria amongst the audience of mainly celebrities, fashionistas and journalists who had gathered to be mesmerized by Rajah’s métier. Titled ‘La Belle Dame Sans Regret’, Rajah drew his inspiration from Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ – a story about a woman in search of love and purpose. He describes his collection as ‘romantic…and it’s really about a woman traveling on her own and finding love…with pieces to suit her every mood…from being contemplative to being a sultry temptress.’ This season has a multifaceted approach: from cotton and silk voile dresses to soft suede, from swimsuits to knitted cotton cardigans for balmy evening, and not forgetting the renowned Rajah cocktail and evening pieces. His use of exquisite and exotic materials (silk dévore satins, cashmere, knitted bamboo and mohair) gives his outfits a forbidden fruit feel, a decadence that we must all indulge in. Rajah further adds a touch of masculinity to this season by including a few separate pieces for men. The show also highlights his philanthropic activities with UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador. Gavin Rajah truly embodies Mademoiselle Coco Chanel’s philosophy this...

Jozi Comedy Festival
It sounds like a largely international comedy festival to us as we fail to spot many local names although it looks like the Cool Runnings Comedy Showdown sessions continue to rock and form a part of the festival. If you’re up for a laugh, get to the Jozi Comedy festival… in previous years, Cape Town hosted the International Comedy Festival but this year Johannesburg will take its turn to present the broadest selection of comedy styles and material ever seen at such an event. The Festival, which will run over seven days, will consist of an international stand up theatre show – the “UN Comedy Show”, international comedy short films – “Funny Shorts”, international street performers from Canada, the UK and Australia in “Street Comedy”; a local stand-up competition – “Comedy Showdown”, and the much awaited Air Guitar Competition – “Hot-Air”. The UN Comedy Show will be hosted by international comedy icon, Paul Rodriguez (Mexico/USA). Paul’s career spans more than two decades and includes starring roles and featured appearances in over 30 films like “The Whoopee Boys”, “Ali” and “Crocodile Dundee” and countless television series and specials. He has performed live to well over one million concert goers and is considered to be the Richard Pryor of original comedy – with a Latin twist. He will be joined on stage by comedy heavy weight Sugar Sammy (India/Canada) who has been voted the number one stand-up comedian for the last three years in Canada and who’s performed to more than 10,000 fans during his previous tour to South Africa. Comedy legend Carl Barron (Australia), the biggest selling comic in Australia and Paul Zerdin (England) who is considered one of the most versatile performers and ventriloquists of our time will share the spotlight with funny man Frank Spadone (Italy/Canada) who performed his one man show to sold-out crowds in Canada and the US as well as Bobby Lee (Korea) who has garnered millions of fans through his comedy, film and television appearances. South Africa’s rising star Trevor Noah will complete the 5-star line-up. The UN Comedy Show carries an age restriction of 16. Funny Shorts, 90 minutes of the world’s funniest short films, will take comedy to the screens at Montecasino’s Nu Metro Cinema during the festival. A cast of internationally acclaimed street performers will be showing Jozi crowds that laughter is indeed an international currency when they take comedy to the streets around The Montecasino Piazza for Street Comedy. Shows, with content suitable for all ages, will be between 30 to 40 minutes long and a total of 30 shows will be performed over the seven day period. The ultimate...
AKENOSI finds his Polena
We love the democratic casting process of the North West crew’s latest creative venture, Akenosi starring Presley Chweneyagae in the lead role as AK. The film production process also started off with a launch party at Roka two weeks ago, setting an upbeat tone for the crew, we look forward to sharing the film’s journey with you: The movie is based on the 1994 civil riots in Mafikeng and follows the life of a 30-year-old heroic young man called Akenosi who suffers the consequences of being involved in the Bophuthatswana riots. AK (Akenosi) is going into production in July, and we are proud to announce that it will feature our home brewed stars such as our Oscar winning North West born Presley Chweneyagae, Boikie Pholo, Zenzo Nqcobe and one of our internationally recognized lyrical genius HHP, amongst others. The Akenosi auditions held at the Mmabana, Mmabatho Drama Studio this past weekend were a huge success. Like HHP, KB, Presley Chweneyagae, Zenzo Ngqobe, Tuks etc – there is always a new star coming out of the North West! Over a 100 hopeful young women between the ages of 23-27 from all over the North West turned up to participate in the auditions for the character Polena – who would act alongside Presley Chweneyagae (AKENOSI). The auditions took two days. The producers of AKENOSI were on their way to determine who this lucky young lady would be.The session started off with screen tests where the ladies introduced themselves, then the stages became more intense when 26 of the young ladies where chosen from the lot.. then eventually only 9 where given the script to show off their raw talent. The producers watched with such awe as one by one, many a lady, displayed such innovative and varied acting abilities. This is despite the fact that almost all of these young ladies do not have any formal training in acting. In the end it was a tie between two ladies – a lot of deliberations went on among Presley Chweneyagae (Lead), Rabotho Rakgajane (Director/ Co-producer) and Joan Legalamitlwa (Co-producer). Lerato Motswiri and Lebogang Matsosi where the top two. Lerato, a young woman from Lehurutshe was raised by a group of women in the small village of Lobatleng. This young promising actress kept it together under the raving talent of Presley. The producers are now proud to introduce this talent to you. Please see attached photos of Lerato Motswiri – our Polena in the movie...
