Candy Kramer @ the Obert

Don’t miss Candy Kramer’s exhibit entitled ‘Confluence’ at the Obert Contemporary at Melrose Arch from the 28 March 2008. In her first solo exhibition Candy Kramer explores her identity as a South African with Eastern European heritage. With the passing of decades and the migration between continents, Kramer is moved to ask the questions: how does one transmit immutable deep-rooted values while adapting to a new, fast changing world? Which of those values are malleable and which ones remain immutable? The themes of the passing of time, the fusing of old and new and the erosion and transmission of memories and values infuse the works on show. Kramer’s method includes both the traditional medium of oil on canvas and, more significantly, the rusting process of steel. by taking steel, something so solid, dense, strong and uniform in nature, and immersing it in water (to which it reacts by eroding all but the indelible image) the artist conceptually expresses her curiosity with degeneration and regeneration. The rusting process allows the essential portrait to emerge – the outcome of this technique, seen in these vibrant works, hints at the answers to Kramer’s questions: what has remained intact from the original? what has been eroded and what has...

Party People in Mozi, Jozi and CT

We told you they were gonna keep you rocking all year. DJ Khenzero takes his wicked event Party People and spreads the love to Maputo, Cape Town and Jozi this month. Wish we were there! This March Party People moves to Mozambique and without further ado Dj Kenzhero brings to you non other than Party People’s first song Bird Fifi along with the illustrious Simba and the Rocats. On the moonlit night of the 21st Dj Kenzhero will be bringing down the roof of a small place in the heart of Maputo called Gil Vicente. Doors will open at 10:00pm and a smooth R60, 00 get you through them. This one promises to be a tropical retreat that no-one should miss out on. THEN… Just a short week after coming back from a sun kissed long weekend in Mozambique, Party People moves on down to the mother city to host the third Party of its kind to reach this corner of South Africa. Friday the 28th of March 2008 will have residents of Zula Bar, situated on the long stretch of Long Street, skankin down to the smooth reggae sounds of Teba and his band, and of course to compliment the mood of the night Dj Kenzhero will do what he does best and that is to play his way through. AND FINALLY The very next day Dj Kenzhero presents another overwhelming Jo’burg line up. Starting off with a some what reminiscent sound of the night before, Zimbabwean born reggae musician, Rantoboko will open the platform for Brooklyn based rapper Wordsworth at Party Peoples first home, Roka. Indeed a balanced combination of the two acclaimed artists is something definitely worth seeing. R80, 00 presale, R100, 00 at the door. For presale tickets call Candace Allan at 072 314...
