Visit Body Maps @ David Krut

We remind all Representers to continue to support the HIV/AIDS initiatives way after December the 1st in every way you can.  Visit the David Krut Gallery for the BODY MAPS exhibtion: From 22 November David Krut Projects will show Body Maps by the Bambanani Women. The Bambanani Women were invited to tell their stories of living with HIV/AIDS through a community outreach program initiated by the AIDS and Society Research Unit of the University of Cape Town (ASRU) and Médecins Sans Frontières. This program sought to document the lives of this group of HIV+ women who were given access to drug therapies. The project was initially run by Jonathan Morgan with the help of Cape Town-based art therapist, Jane Solomon. Participants created Body Maps – life-size images that traced the contours of their bodies allowing each of them to ‘visualise’ the virus, how the drugs were protecting them from the virus and articulate their individual history. David Krut was approached to exhibit these works in New York for AIDS Day 2003. The exhibition continued at David Krut Projects New York and received a great deal of attention. Several academic institutions requested that the exhibition travel to their university art galleries. Long Life – Positive HIV Stories, a collaborative book based on the Body Maps project, profiles the lives of members of the Bambanani Women’s group and provides a context for these exhibitions. Body Maps became a touring exhibition that started at the Flaten Art Gallery, St. Olaf College, Minnesota in September 2004 and has since travelled widely in the United States. Johnson and Johnson, a company doing major research in AIDS drug research, adopted the exhibition and promoted it internationally as their cultural project for 2005. The World Food Programme has also adopted the imagery for use in their posters throughout the world. DAVID KRUT PROJECTS 142 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood. What Would Jesus Buy?

What Would Jesus Buy?

“We’re a movement, we’re a movie, we’re a book, we’re common sense… We’re trying to get America to stop their shopping!…. Hallelujah. Amen.”  Rev Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping. We’re not sure when it’s out in SA but you MUST catch director/producer team Rob van Alkamade and Morgan Spurlock’s “What would Jesus Buy?”.  It’s a documentary (or mockumentary?) featuring  “Reverend Billy” the flamboyant Elvis-meets-RayMcAuley style PREACHER who moves around with a colourful gospel choir trying to rid the US commercial world of SHOPPING DEMONS before it’s too late and we hit SHOPOCALYPSE. It’s a spoof and it looks like a good laugh but it definitely has some brilliant intentions, particularly when one considers the debt situation amongst SA consumers…. – let’s hope people pick up on the irony and see fluff for what it truly is.  See what IMDB says here.  Watch the trailer below: Wikipedia tells us: The film focuses on the issues of the commercialization of Christmas, materialism, the over-consumption in American culture, globalization, and the business practices of large corporations, as well as their economic and cultural effects on American society, as seen through the prism of activist/performance artist Bill Talen, who goes by the alias of “Reverend Billy,” and his troupe of activists, whose street theater performances take the form of a church choir called “The Church of Stop Shopping,” that sings anti-shopping and anti-corporate songs. The film follows Billy and his choir as they take a cross-country trip in the month prior to Christmas 2005, and spread their message against what they perceive as the evils of patronizing the retail outlets of several different large corporate...

This goes out to the broken-hearted

You’re either gonna love or hate it – soppy, over-produced, cheesy…the whole “rock meets soul” cliche…. but *damn* it’s CATCHY!  For anyone going through a break up or on the other side of a messy one… you’re gonna FEEL IT…Tell ’em to rock off to this! It’s number 3 on the UK charts this week – watch Apologise from Timbaland featuring One Republic.  Tell us what you think! The (cringy) lyrics:  I’m holding on your rope Got me ten feet off the ground And I’m hearing what you say But I just can’t make a sound You tell me that you need me Then you go and cut me down But wait… You tell me that you’re sorry Didn’t think I’d turn around and say.. That it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late I said it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late I’d take another chance, take a fall, take a shot for you And I need you like a heart needs a beat (But that’s nothing new) Yeah yeah I loved you with a fire red, now it’s turning blue And you say Sorry like the angel heaven let me think was you But I’m afraid It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late I said it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late Woahooo woah It’s too late to apologize, it’s too late I said it’s too late to apologize, it’s too late I said it’s too late to apologize, yeah yeah I said it’s too late to apologize, a yeah I’m holding on your rope Got me ten feet off the...

Represent Interview: Loyiso Gola

Miss P is back and she’s working it…Siyanamukela! Catch her tête-à-tête with supernovae Loyiso Gola – reach out for falling stardust as he shoots his way through the entertainment galaxy! Watch this space for ticket give-aways to his show next week. Represent! Loyisa Gola is a funny man. But what else is he about? It’s just over a week before his show ‘Loyiso Gola for President (Part 2)’and Palesa Madumo caught up with him on the set of his television show ‘Dinner with the President’ which airs on Thursdays on SABC 2 at 21:30. (FOR A LIVE ENCOUNTER: Catch Loyiso from 29 November to 1 December, Live from the Alexander Theatre (Siemens St, Braamfontein) from 29 November to 1 December 2007. Tickets are R100 at Computicket and R120 at the door.  Doors open at 19h30 and the show will start at 20h00 sharp!) Take it away Miss P:  Loyiso Gola’s forthright talk could definitely land him in hot water, however, I suspect that he usually gets away with it, it’s in his nature- after all he is a comedian! Watching Loyiso perform his role as Evita Bezuidenhoud’s, (Pieter Dirk Uys) grandson on the kitsch living room set of his comical talk show ‘Dinner with the President’ reveals his blasé yet spontaneous funny man nature.  He’s just turned 24 and scooped the Best Breakthrough Comedy Act award at the inaugural South African Comedy Awards held in September- it seems; this rather lofty bona fide heavyweight from Gugulethu has the world in the palm of his hand. I hung out with him on a break from the first half on the morning’s shoot and Loyiso almost immediately started speaking explicitly about himself, his work and his general opinion about certain matters, including interviews, which he finds to be repetitive and lacking substance at times. I agree, once you’ve read one thing about Loyiso online, it seems you know it all, so in an attempt to uncover new insight, when he asked my opinion about his show last year- ‘Loyiso Gola for President’, I jump on the opportunity to address what I felt was a rather insensitive joke about child sexual abuse in South Africa. “I’m a candid person. I don’t think that jokes about abuse are insensitive, I think what I do allows me to talk about what I want to talk about, the way I want to talk about it. I don’t think people come to a comedy show to learn, they come to laugh and hear about topical issues- in a funny way” It is clear that even though Loyiso makes jokes about sensitive situations, he is actually concerned and active in curbing some of...

Two weeks left to enter the 14th SAMA’s

Muso’s get going  – there are only two weeks left until entries close for The 14th Annual MTN SA Music Awards that take place in May 2008. November 30th 2007 is the cut-off date for those who want to enter the most prestigious music awards event on the industry calendar. With the exception of a handful of categories, product released between 1st December 2006 and 30th November 2007 will be eligible for entry into 2008’s edition of the awards. Those categories where the release date of the album is not considered are Best Selling Album, the Lifetime Achievement Award, Best Music Video and Record of the Year. The proprietary online entry system for record companies will once again be used for the submission of entries. Entry forms must be completed and submitted online at http://www.samusicawards.co.za/. Alternatively, RiSA staff have set up a helpdesk at their premises to assist anyone who cannot make use of the online entry system. RiSA’s offices are located at Unit 4, 150 Bram Fischer Drive, Randburg. All material being submitted for consideration must reach RiSA by no later than November 30th 2007 for entries to be eligible for the 14th Annual MTN SA Music Awards, which are scheduled to take place in early May 2008. Where eligibility requirements are concerned, entry is open to any qualifying recording artist, director, producer or engineer – the qualifying factor being someone who has been a legal resident in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, or Botswana for a minimum of six (6) months on the date of entry or is a South African citizen. For duos or groups, the rules stipulate that not less than 50 percent of the duo or group needs to fall into this citizenship requirement stated above. In addition, unless stated otherwise, collaborations/productions between qualifying artists and international artists are allowed, provided the South African qualifying artists’ participation is given star, or equal, billing. Rules guiding entry submissions are also available for downloading from the MTN SAMA website – www.samusicawards.co.za – a reference tool that serves as a guideline for the entire process of the MTN South African Music Awards. This year there are an incredible 62 categories, with enhancements to existing categories and brand new categories coming from an ongoing desire to reflect the diversity, the dynamism, and the talent that exists in the South African music industry! Of the 62 categories, TEN categories are not open for entry from October 29th to November 30th. These are the Record of the Year, a pubic vote category that employs radio airplay as the mechanism for determining the nominees; Best Selling Album and the newly inaugurated Best...
