Jerm joins eNCA.com as the editorial cartoonist!

Jeremy Nell, otherwise known to South Africans as Jerm, is joining eNCA.com as our official editorial cartoonist. His first cartoon will appear on eNCA.com from Tuesday, 08 October. Jerm began his cartoon career in 2005 after leaving his corporate job and he went on to win a number of awards. He’s also been recognised as one of the ‘Top 200 Young South Africans’ and one of the ‘Top 40 under 40’ media personalities during 2013. Jerm’s work has appeared in a number of newspapers, magazines and online publications. He now joins South Africa’s biggest television news network, eNCA. Says Timothy Spira, GM of eNCA Online: “Our association with Jerm slots nicely into this dynamic, providing visual content that will work across both TV and online. It is also a step forward in our ambition to bolster our opinion content, building on a strong base that already includes regular contributions from the likes of Jeremy Maggs and Fred Khumalo. I am tremendously excited to be working with Jerm. His work reflects the same ethos of unflinching examination of contemporary society that has become the hallmark of eNCA”, Says Jeremy Nell, Editorial Cartoonist: “While print media dwindles, I am chuffed to be at the forefront of South Africa’s growing digital cartooning landscape. And it’s even better that eNCA see the value in digital media. I am pretty excited to be working with eNCA”. Jerm’s cartoons will appear on Tuesdays to Fridays on eNCA.com. eNCA.com FACTS eNCA.com is now just six months old and we’re delighted with the performance of the site. In September eNCA.com passed the milestone of half-a-million unique browsers (UBs), with 538,000 total UBs and 395,000 domestic UBs, placing us ahead of news sites that have been around for many years. Our combination of original text and image content, combined with extensive video coverage, is clearly hitting the mark with the South African online news consumer. We’ve also benefitted tremendously from the interplay between TV and the website by providing additional context to TV stories that give viewers a reason to go online. We recently extended this even further with the launch of a new Video section containing all of our online videos in a format that is easy to navigate, and which provides users with access to all current affairs and news content that has run on eNCA’s TV...

SERIOUSLY FUNNY is Darren Maule’s brand new comedy show!

For a limited season only – Darren Maule will be at Mardi Gras, Carnival City, Johannesburg with his multi-media show, SERIOUSLY FUNNY from Friday 25 October until 29 November 2013. For the past nineteen years, Darren’s versatility as a mime, trained theatrical actor and stand-up comedian has made him a name which, somewhere along the line, we remember. He was “that” guy on Survivor SA Santa Carolina or perhaps you remember his great repartee with co-host Pabi Moloi on PlayTV, his sharp cutting wit on “Out the Box” and “Last Say on Sunday”  or maybe you remember Darren as the dark horse/comic relief in the multi-award winning “Hard Copy” TV drama series. However you remember him, SERIOUSLY FUNNY combines Darren’s skills as a comedian, actor and physical performer to tell the story – as only Darren can – of all his ups and downs, highs and lows, for better or for worse and to show that there is always, always space for comedy in life. Darren uses his story-telling ability to demonstrate how absolutely anything can be funny. For the first time he will tell of his sometimes sordid, certainly colourful and definitely not boring life.  He takes you through the burgeoning days of comedy when stand-up comics really were the rock stars of the entertainment industry and when nobody behaved more like a rock star than Darren Maule!  He survived his lifestyle of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll and has emerged stronger, better and funnier and he just keeps achieving.  Darren relocated to Durban two years ago and has continued growing as a performer and can now boast an even larger following… as a breakfast radio show host. To this day people stop Darren and ask if he is the guy from “White Wedding”.  Quite an accolade really seeing as he only had 2 minutes of screen time.   He also had a cameo appearance in “District 9” which nobody will remember – his scene was cut! It is brave.  It is funny. It is his story told for the first time by him. SERIOUSLY FUNNY is Darren Maule’s multi-media comedy show and is an experience for the whole family. Tickets are R100.00 each and available at the door of Mardi Gras, Carnival City on the night of each performance.  Box Office opens at 18h00 before each performance. Performance schedule: ·Friday 25 October 2013 @ 20h00 – Media Review night. ·Friday 1 November 2013 @ 20h00 ·Friday 15 November 2013 @ 20h00 ·Friday 29 November 2013 @...

Announcing TEDxJohannesburgCity2.0

Dream me. Build me. Make me real. On Friday 20 September 2013, TED will host TEDCity2.0 in New York, focusing on how bright urban ideas turn into collective impact through collaborative action. TEDx communities across the globe – including TEDxJohannesburg – will host parallel events along the same theme. Our event, named TEDxJohannesburgCity2.0, takes place at JoziHub on 44 Stanley, Milpark, from 12noon until 7pm. The event will feature talks from the bright minds and big hearts involved in remaking Johannesburg – stewards, artists, builders and tastemakers shaping a brave new future for the metropolis. They will share narratives of urban innovation and transformation focusing on global City 2.0 themes – Art, Education, Food, Health, Housing, Play, Public Space, and Safety – all elements essential to the future health and success of our beloved Joburg. Thereafter we’ll cross live to New York for talks from the TED stage. TEDxJohannesburgCity2.0 will feature up to five live local speakers passionate about the city and in tune with the issues. One will offer an idea for a clear, do-able, compelling collaborative action. Speakers from the TEDstage will present ideas that cut across borders, also with very specific calls to action. Expect to mix and mingle with an audience of city dwellers open to new thoughts and perspectives on how we can collectively build Johannesburg into the city we want. Drinks and snacks will be served. R200 covers costs. Registration is open. Let’s make it real. TEDxJohannesburg...

COMPETITION: Joburgers and the Holi Festival of Colours 2013

COMPETITION: Joburgers and the Holi Festival of Colours 2013

Are you  ready to paint the town red…and blue and green and yellow. Don’t hesitate to add more colour… Part of the eight countries and 30 cities worldwide, the Johannesburg leg of the Holi Festival of Colours 2013 World Tour will transform The Mary Fitzgerald Square on the 14th of September 2013 into a multi-colour dance floor. South Africa’s rainbow nation will come together in this open-air venue and fill the space with bright yellows, reds, greens and blues in the sky, on beaming faces and lifting up from the floor on the beat of moving feet and the music that drives it. Holi is one of the largest festivals in India announcing the arrival of spring and the passing of winter and marks the victory of the good over the bad. During the celebrations the caste system is out of force and so all people are equal – the symbol for that are the colours – all people are equally coloured. The festival breathes an atmosphere of laughter and is an expression of joy with people burying their hatchets and throwing their worries to the wind. The Holi Festival of Colours Festival Joburg supports one of Holi’s biggest custom of loosening the strictness of social structures and bringing communities together in an exhilarating experience. Every hour on the hour from 15h00 a countdown culminates in partygoers throwing their powder into the air to create a massive explosion of colour. The coloured powder is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and allergen free. The line-up includes big names such as Goldfish, Crazy White Boy (Live)and DJ Fresh. Goldfish needs no introduction to South Africa. Their genre-defying mix of live instruments, House beats and searing live performances has seen Goldfish go from impromptu jams at a tiny beach club in Cape Town to headlining Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium, cracking top 10 on the US iTunes Dance Chart, a residency at Pacha Ibiza with David Guetta and DJ’s like Fedde le Grand knocking on their door to remix their tracks. Crazy White Boy’s music can be described as a blend of Kwaito and House rhythms with little elements of electro, which the duo has coined as “Ghetto Tech”. It is this kind of music that has earned Crazy White Boy multiple Gold and Platinum selling albums, a South African Music Awards (SAMA) nomination for “Song of the Year” for their hit single, Love you Better in 2011 and a Metro Award nomination for “Best Group Album” in 2013. Their latest single, Zoma has been topping the charts on most South African radio stations. DJ Fresh is one of South Africa’s most-sought after mix masters. This much loved 5FM...
