13/09 :: RICHARD SMITH exhibition @ CONHILL

Best known for his political satire, Smith began his career as a cartoonist for the Sunday Times in 1966 and served as curator for the inaugural Brett Kebble Art Awards, the country’s largest visual art award. His CV includes a host of solo and group shows both locally and internationally. ‘Dialogues’, an exhibition of recent works by Richard Smith celebrates a collaboration betw…een Artspace and Constitution Hill. This body of work was produced by the artist during a period of 18 months of near seclusion in the artist’s home in Onrus. ‘The only people to have seen these works are those that have visited my studio over the past year…’ Smith commented, ‘This is a completely fresh collection of work’. The exhibition comprises mainly large portraits of real people and smaller portraits of imagined people. Smith uses mixed media on Fabriano paper. Central to this exhibition is the theme of dialogue and communication, both as a means of hope and a source of tension. The work explores conflict, communication and exchange between the past and the present, between the people depicted and the visual elements within the works. SKIN QUARTET World tour coming to WITS

Thanks to Kaganof for the heads up, these guys sound VERY interesting… Drawing from the CIA World Factbook’s relentless list of ethnicities, populations and life expectancies, visual artist Louisa Bufardeci and composer David Young compose a series of panoramic micro-landscapes of skin, bringing together digital film and an acoustic string quartet: 1st violin Yasutaka …Hemmi – Japan 2nd violin Andrea Keeble – Australia viola Jason Bunn – Australia violoncello Caerwen Martein – Australia The programme includes string quartets by Alejandro Iglesias Rossi (QUIPUS for amplified quartet_ and Michael Blake (FIRST QUARTET) and the world premiere of a film by Aryan Kaganof. MICHAEL BLAKE UNTITLED directed by Aryan Kaganof South Africa, 2005, 12min, DVCam A portrait of an untitled composition by South Africa’s foremost contemporary composer, Michael Blake. The portrait follows pianist Jill Richards and clarinettist Robert Pickup as they rehearse the fiendishly difficult composition and ends after the premiere performance of a work that Blake describes as “My most minimalist work. It is largely concerned with surface and very little with traditional formal structures; its finely graded variations of nuance and colour belie the virtuosity required of both performers. Aryan Kaganof’s notion of the cinematic frame as being 6-sided – the four sides of the image plus the beginning and end of the shot in time – articulate very well what I was doing in Untitled, which in a way is about painting, about working quietly on the surface, reconfiguring small brushstrokes by way of changes in register, rhythm, articulation, etc.” 7:30pm monday 26 september wits university amphitheatre R100 (including wine) New Musica...

Review: Get to Kentridge at the JAG in Hillbrow

Robyn, a great fan of the KENTRIDGE RETROSPECTIVE at the Johannesburg Art Gallery in Hillbrow has been hustling us to go for ages… but we’re snowed under. So she did what we’d been hoping and sent us her own review: “Miss this at your peril- and the entrance is free.” “Because you have nought on your amazing site about this exhibition, I’ve drafted a ‘review’… for you to use, abuse and hopefully edit and place on the site. I need no credit, and would love to see you letting many know that it is on. Kentridge at JAG Not being one for writing reviews, but having experienced the amazement that constitutes the Kentridge exhibition at JAG, I am moved to proselytize. The entire entry level floor of JAG has been utilized to showcase his work. My first sensation was of an unreality, as I stood in one of the main central rooms. To my left on the far side of the gallery, the wall was alive with imagery. The same was happening to my right. The sounds of diffuse and diverse soundtracks ebbed and flowed as I moved from room to room. Sitting on one of the many couches, I was able to take in an entire moving story. Walking through the gallery I was assailed by his giant figures, his minute statues and both his art, as well as that of others who had influenced him. I’m not an art critic by any means, just an ordinary person who was well and truly moved by one of the most amazing exhibitions I have seen in years. Exhibition ends on 31 October 2005. The Johannesburg Art Gallery is in Joubert Park, corner Klein and King George Streets. It can be contacted at (011) 725-3130. Thanks to the CITY OF JOHANNESBURG WEBSITE for the picture (courtesy of JAG) and as usual topclass information. Click here for more info on the Gallery itself from Joburg.org....
