Editista must admit that she finds this kind of thing gross… But reading TANTAN’s review, even she may be temped – well for the laugh anyway. Just kidding! Not be turned on at all because I’m not attracted to people I pity. Loftily I considered this type of thing beneath me, men and g-strings being a definite no-no on my planet and I anticipated the shows would be funny in a ludicrous sort of way. Enter my first male strip show, the REAL Chippendales nogal! To my delighted surprise I’ve found that stripping can give men as much power as women. If done well of course, and this lot are the cream of the crop! Exquisite physiques, devious twinkles in the eyes, stage presence, great dancers with the exception of one who was merely competent. Hell they could even sing when they had to support David, the lead singer in the show. These men are very talented, BEYOND the obvious, singing popular music that had us up on our feet, some even up on their chairs, and with excellently choreographed dance moves worthy of any MTV music video. In the end the flesh flashing portion of the show was probably 30%, it was the waiting for those glimpses of flesh that made us scream and giggle and say utterly lewd things! I knew I was in trouble when I found myself standing in a puddle of alcohol shouting “Take it off! Take it off!” When the number of men at a show is so negligible that the women annexed their bathrooms and you have queues of women coming out of all loos, you can only be at a Chippendales show. Inside the ladies room during intermission one of the ladettes who looked like the owner of her own home hair salon casually warned a fellow punter to “Back off he’s mine!… I only have a year to live!” eliciting raucous giggles if there is such a thing. I don’t know which one of the Chippendales she was referring to but it pretty much summed up the level of primal lust all those boys awoke in us with their cleverly staged fantasies, hot bodies and red-hot dance moves. See our review of the night by Noxyrsox and a cd review below. REVIEW – LIVE PERFORMANCE If you missed the Kwani Experience you missed out. What a treat. The band is a mix of eight individually talented male musicians and one female vocalist whose voice is so controlled that it lulls you into a beautiful zone where you are drawn into the music. Most interesting, according to me, was the rasta percussionist who played his home-made range of instruments that included enamel mugs and bowls, and some ordinary looking sticks. One doesn’t usually notice the person playing percussion but this guy was fantastic. Plus he had some really cool gold-rimmed sunglasses. The saxophonist, too, was an act on his own. It’s so rare that you see such talent in such a young musician, but this guy was amazing and got better as he morphed into the music. But the favourite had to be the Lenny Kravitz look alike, the bassist, who jumped around the stage with such vigour that at times he stole the show. The other men, who included the keyboardist, bongo drum player and drummer, were more subdued but played their instruments with equal zest and were just as integral to creating the band’s rich sound as the others. It was really interesting to note that there was no guitarist, which is kind of a mind shift...

Like many girls her age (now 29), the big pop/R&B balladeers of our time – Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Karyn White, etc – incited in her a desire to sing in public. Unlike with most however, that desire became a matter of urgency when Pebbles decided finishing a journalism degree at Rhodes University was just not for her. Nor was an interim job at her parents’ car parts shop in Port Elizabeth. There she initially resisted encouragement from friends and family alike to take on Jozi’s bright lights as a means to fulfil her dream. ‘I was just lazy about it. I couldn’t find it in me to get it together and part of it also had to do with being scared,’ she recalls. ‘But they all just kept hassling me until I gave in one day.’ Giving in coincided with an opening at then brand new Outrageous Records for a female vocalist. One audition won over the label’s CEO Dzino, and fast-tracked her on to the theme song for Black Rage’s TV show Bassiq and then on to the compilation CD Rage in 2001. The latter spawned Destiny, the song with the haunting melody and uplifting message, acclaimed today as an underground classic, which appears as a remix (featuring Optical Illusion’s Golden Shovel) on the subsequent Maximum Sentence mixtape. It would be the public’s first taste of a brand of R&B/jazz/soul-flavoured music with cheeky inflections Pebbles coined – playful soul. Pebbles’ debut album, titled as such, amplifies this concept, which carries sometimes melancholy subject matter (on songs like Confused Again and Lonely) with unlikely yet effective nonchalance: ‘I don’t know what it is about me but I am drawn to sad songs,’ she admits laughingly. ‘I think the way I sing them makes them listenable.
