Jay-Z gives Twitter some L.O.V.E.
After announcing his yearly allotment on Twitter and telling his fans he’d see them in 2014 in mid June, Jay Z surprised everybody yesterday when he started replying to random people around the world. He’s not known to tweet much, follows nobody (not even his wife Beyoncé) and had about 74 tweets before his replies yesterday. Jay even replied to some South African fans during his Twitter binge saying he might come to South Africa, God willing. His page grew by more than 100 000 fans during this time. Here are some of our favorite responses from...
Win a VIP experience with The Comic’s Choice Awards 2013. 10 Days left!!
If I wrote “LOL” in response to a BBM chat with my friend, he would end the chat because he knows I’m not laughing – for that matter, not even loud. So to cut the story short, the comic choice awards aren’t gonna make you “LOL” with a straight face like me :-l and so here’s a chance to be entertained beyond my usual LOL, details after the jump. Support SA’s hottest local comedy talent by voting for your favourite comedian in the Savanna Audience Choice Award category and you could win a VIP experience to the 3rd Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards™ (CCA’s) on 24 August for you and your partner. Voting for the CCA’s closes on 14 July, which means there are only 10 days left! It’s easy to vote: visit http://www.comicschoice.co.za/public-voting/, scroll through the registered comedians, choose your favourite (and funniest), and SMS only that comedian’s unique code to 38374. You can vote twenty times (if you can’t choose just one favourite comedian!). But…something NEW for 2013! Whilst voting for the four nominees in each award category will close on the 14th, the CCA has decided to change the rules slightly this year. When the four nominees in the Savanna Audience Choice Award category are announced, voting will re-open for that award only, giving each of the four comics the opportunity to campaign for further votes. The comedian who earns the highest number of votes is awarded the ‘Waldo’ – the ‘Oscar’ of the comedy industry – at the awards event in August. Previous winners include Bevan Cullinan and Sifiso Nene. Ensure that your favourite comedian is in the top four by voting now! The VIP package includes dinner for two at Montecasino, entrance to the awards and access to the exclusive after party at Parker’s Comedy Club. Wawela Awards 2013 – The low down.
SAMRO officials and music lovers at large gathered at the Sandton Convention Centre to pay homage to SA’s top songwriters and composers living in the country & abroad. Before the awards ceremony went underway dinner was served: an exquisite 3-course meal enjoyed to the sounds of beautiful music while soft candlelight created the perfect ambiance. To kick things off, funny guy 5FM breakfast show host Gareth Cliff, and stunner Azania Masoka of the newly launched PowerFM introduced themselves as MCs for the evening to an excited crowd, and then the show began. The first performance of the night was by The Soil with a song from their hit album, followed by Black Porcelain, a young lady with an exquisite voice who many were experiencing for the first time. She took home awards for Best Female and Creative Album of the Year, becoming one of two artists to achieve such a feat, alongside Trevor Jones who scooped the Wawela Breaking Borders Award. The ever-lovely Lira took the award for Songwriter of the Year. The show continued with stellar performances by Mam’ Dorothy Masuku and Mafikizolo performing Nontsokolo to the crowds delight, & she proved why she is a living legend by winning the Lifetime Achievement Award to celebrate her 60 years in the music biz. There was a spirited performance by Phuzekhemisi alongside Koos Kombuis, who sang a beautiful ballad to the soothing sound of his guitar. The White Zulu AKA Johnny Clegg took us back to the days of Juluka & Sipho Mchunu & he also walked away with the prestigious Wawela Prolific Catalogue of Works award for his illustrious career spanning more than 3 decades. The Inaugural Recognition Award was awarded to five well deserving composers. These are artists who have gonebeyond their call of duty to compose melodies that have dominated radio, TV and even international Film drama series. Notable winners included Lebo M, Mbongeni Ngema, Alan Lazar, Trevor Jones and Sizwe Zako who praised their peers for inspiration in their acceptance speeches. As the night of celebration drew to a close, outgoing CEO of SAMRO Nick Motsatse’s two daughters surprised him with a piano & violin medley and the chairman of the SAMRO Board of directors, Rev. Abe Sibiya presented Mr Motsatse with a special award. He also thanked Mr Motsatse for his dedication and service to the state of South African music. Mafikizolo brought the house down with their single Khona which had all guests on their feet & getting down. All in all it was an exquisite evening where the people behind the music finally got their chance under the spotlight. Awards like Wawela...
