WOZA SISI WOZA MAMA – White gel gets braids

I told you guys I would have it done. VOILA – enjoy!!!!!!! I encourage everyone to do it! Just make sure you have lots of time – my hair took nearly 5 hours! SIS’WAM Sis’wami goes strolling in Kerk St amongst the bustling stalls… I encourage all Joburgers to take some time off and stroll through Kerk St in town – park your car on Rissik near the Wo…olies sign and just walk there – it’s a fantastic street with all kinds of bargains – from fresh juicy fruit and veges to belts, ponchos, second hand leather jackets, takkies, newspapers, cigarettes, batteries etc – the bonus is you’ve got Woolworths and Edgars right there as well as a Specsavers and many other shops to go to as well as the market-style shops… I was suprised to hear the ladies calling out my name to come and see their braiding photo-books – I am a white girl and I have approached these ladies before and received a rather cold greeting and confused looks – possibly because I have short hair, possibly because I am an Mlungu asking for miracles… But nonetheless, with a beaming grin I strolled over to the pavement braiders to find out what they had in mind for me… False dreadlocks – says Ma’Rebecca – funny enough, if ever it was going to be braids, that’s exactly what I would go for – false dreadlocks – I haven’t seen a white chick with them yet and I don’t know how they would look but I am brave enough to give it a go… And I have always wanted dreadlocks. Malini Ma? I ask expectantly – having fallen for Ma Rebecca’s great sales pitch – EISH SISI she says – for your hair we need three packs of hair plus it is going to be expensive for the braiding… Yoh! Too much…. Now I am used to being completely ripped off by suburban hair-dressers who gooi in a free hand-massage and expect you not to swallow hard when the bill comes. Your average hairdo will cost about R600 – R800 – thats a cut, colour and blowdry… And the colour fades 2 weeks later… To prevent the colour from fading you then try and wash your hair less meaning you walk around with dirty hair a lot with a style that fell apart two days after the salon. So yes – I am both tempted and interested in what the ladies have to offer me… So I ask Ma Rebecca to add it up and give it to me – R45 x 3 for the hair makes it...

PAPER… ROCKS! Get arty at the the NSA in Durban

The NSA Gallery is a fabulous spot in Glenwood, Durban – you can sit and kuier at the Arts Cafe where they serve yummy food or just wander around the very reasonable arts and craft shop or you can wander into the gallery and check out the latest Art Exhibition – But please take note visitors to Deben and Durbanites alike: THE NSA NEEDS Y…OUR SUPPORT! If you are not yet a member, please join – there is talk of a takeover by a corporate-style management, which would threaten the artistic integrity of the Natal Society for Arts. Our Deben Dee-VA fills us in on what’s cooking at the NSA: PAPER… ROCKS! Works on Paper is on show at Durban’s NSA Gallery until the 8 May. The exhibition features various works on paper, including sculpture, drawings, photographs and prints. The eclectic mix provides relief from the sombre simplicity of the gallery’s main exhibit, Promised Land, by Bonita Alice. The room is crammed with diverse images and themes: from modernist prints by Walter Battis, to the quirky postmodern postage-stamp-type illustration by Kim Longhurst; from Ros Sarkin’s photographic study of Down Syndrome across cultures, to to garish and delightful multi-cultural pieces by Simmy Dullay. Also included are works by Clinton De Menezes and Brigitta Gaylard, to name but a few. The most memorable pieces for me: Broken Coversation by Michael Croeser and, best of all, the field of pink paper piggies (and one piglet)! Pop in before the 8th May! Get Urban in Durban at the DDC meets Red Eye

The Mercury DDC meets Red Eye! Once again our Deben Dee-Va keeps us informed as to what is going down in the sub-tropics. The Durban Designers Collection (DDC), the biggest event on Durban’s fashion calendar, celebrates it’s 25th birthday this year. In keeping with the drive to draw people back into Durban’s ‘cultural precinct’ at night and as part of the city’s… broader inner-city regeneration plans, the organisers have decided to merge this year’s DDC with the May Red Eye, to turn the show into a larger entertainment event. Designers fall into three categories: The Mercury ‘Invited Designer’ category; the Mr Price ‘Young Designer’ category; and the Brutal Fruit ‘New Generation Designer’ category. Many of South Africa’s established designers began their careers as up-and-coming designers at the DDC. The ‘Invited Designers’ for this year include Laurie and Gary Holmes {‘The Holmes Brothers’), Paul Botha (‘Ruff Tung’), Leigh Schubert, Terrence Bray and Simona Mugnai-Rogan (‘Blond’) The event takes place on the 13th and 14th of May at the laah-nee Durban City Hall. The after party takes place across the road at the Playhouse (“Yay! Bring back the days of the Playhouse Raves!” I hear some say&) Pic Courtesy of the Sunday...

Big dogs AMAKHOSI v BUCCANEERS this Saturday

It’s premier league showdown time and the heavyweights of local soccer – ORLANDO PIRATES and KAIZER CHIEFS will be fighting it out at this year’s SOWETO DERBY. It’s going down at the FNB stadium aka Soccer City this Saturday 30 April where organisers are expecting a packed-out stadium and lots of true homegrown electric atmosphere as fans jet i…n from all over the country and don their team colours and their facepaint and gooi as hard as they can on their VUVUZELA’s. Kick-off is at 15h15 but you wanna get there a lot earlier so you can buy your ‘cellphone’ (booze in a small bottle that makes u talk) find your seat, sing a song, dance to the tunes of local muso’s and support the opening match: “The curtain-raiser for the derby, a celebrity match between the Buccaneers and the Amakhosi, will include the likes of Mapaputsi, Arthur Mafukate, Teboho Moloi and Tshepo Mabona and artists like Pitch Black Afro, Zola, DJ Ganyani will keep the crowd on their feet.” says Joburg.Org So there’s a free concert thrown in too! Tickets can be bought at Computicket – R20 for adults and R15 for teens… YOU WANNA HURRY THOUGH! This is kind of like our CUP FINAL and anyone that loves soccer or a true South African sporting atmosphere will lap it up. REPRESENT will be there – we can’t say who we support but suffice to say “UP THE BUCS!” “The race is getting hotter and hotter now between the country’s two giants, KUYOZE KUYOVALWA!!!!” Courtesy PSL...
