At last – film in Soweto! In Johannesburg this week two film screenings introduced by the filmmakers themselves – one of them being the highly respected author of “No Logo” Naomi Klein. Each screening is a once-off event and admission is FREE! Film makers and media wannabes – get there! MUSIC AND FILM IN MELVILLE – MON 27 June – It’s FREE!
In the first of many fabulous nights to come, you, our dear REPRESENT readers, are invited to the screening of two short films as well as a panel discussion by Eric Miyeni. There is also lots of music going on – from the HARD COPY musicians and a brand new band FREEDOM FIGHTER… WE ARE PROMOTING ORIGINAL SOUTH AFRICAN CULTURE. WHATEVER THE DISCIPLINE, WHATEVER THE MEDI…UM – IT’S ABOUT ORIGINALITY. And You are cordially invited to a premiere screening of IMAGINE (South Africa, 10min, 35mm, 2005) starring Keren Tahor, Mark Dymond and Wendy Sarria. Written and directed by Eran Tahor, re-mixed and re-edited by Aryan Kaganof. Plus the African premiere of MOST THINGS NEVER HAPPEN (Netherlands, 11min, 35mm, 2005) written and directed by Dick Tuinder. These two magical short films are perfectly coupled in a double bill that explores memory, reality, and the essence of cinema itself. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion led by Eric Miyeni. After the discussion HARD COPY soundtrack composer Joel Assaizky will present a selection of his original compositions. The evening’s finale will be the debut performance by FREEDOM FIGHTER, the poetry and music quartet that will be performing on July 6 during the National Arts festival in Grahamstown. Venue is the NEW MELVILLE THEATRE, 7 Main Road Melville, doors open at 7pm, entry is FREE and the bar is open until deep into the night. INNIBOS – Lowveld Arts Festival – Mpumalanga
The Afrikaans Arts festival in Mpumalanga kicks off today and carries on over the weekend… It’s got an interesting twist – the mainly Afrikaans festival is also geared at Portuguese speakers due to it’s proximity to Mozambique and the large Portuguese speaking community in the area. It’s taking place in various venues around Nelspruit and instead of buying one ticket, similar to the G…-town festival, you buy for the shows you want to see. Some big names at first glance: DOZI, Valiant Swart, Anton Goosen, Fokofpolisiekar, Amanda Strijdom, Cut Glass, Manuel Escorcio and NiaNel. INNIBOS 29 June – 3 July Nelspruit Mpumalanga Some background: Hold onto your chairs and strap in tight: InniBos 2005 kicked off on 29 June and is set to take festival goers to arts festival nirvana with some of the country’s most well-known artists, productions and actors confirmed for this year’s lineup. InniBos 2004 was undoubtedly a huge success – approximately 25 000 visitors from across the country attended the festival with its 62 productions. InniBos is bigger and better this time round and the 2005 programme, wich will be hosted in Nelspruit from 29 June to 3 July, is sure to take entertainment in the Lowveld to the highest level. The festival terrain will host 4 stages, ý30 food stalls, 4 sit down restaurants, ý250 art and craft stalls, a merry-go-round, an “art in the park” fine arts section for visual arts, 2 large beer tents, and much more. The RSG Opening Concert, which will take place on Thursday 29th June at the main festival arena, will kick off with favourites such as Kurt Darren, Juanita Du Plessis, Pieter Smith, DNA Strings, Karen & Reneý (the 2004 Zing winners), Nadine and Ddisselblom and will be hosted by Pieter Koen. The festival stage will offer non-stop entertainment every day of the festival. This year will see the start of a main stream artist performing a full show on the main stage every evening with singers such as Pieter Smith, Dozi, the ATKV show “Afrikiti” and Ghapi. The festival will again offer a delightful Portuguese flavor which forms part of the general festival activities with authentic Portuguese foods stalls, music and dance. The InniBos programme obviously offers more than just the festival ground activities: Lucky visitors can look forward to the likes of Nianell, Laurika Rauch and Amanda Strydom, as well as the legendary David Kramer, who will all be hosting shows in some of the various venues utilized for inniBos. Durbs is rocking and all next weekend!
The weather has been awesome in Joburg this winter – sunny but cool, with the odd rebellious fog – don’t know what Cape Town has been like but apparently it’s a little miserable at times. This year the Durban beach front will be alive with loads on the go as the Vodacom Beach Africa swings into action on the 1 – 10 July. The Mr Price Pro is the anchor event which starts on 2 July. Apart from all the competitive sports, Vodacom Beach Africa has a parallel leisure programme. Music lovers can enjoy the Mr. Price live music concerts brought to you by East Coast Radio on the North Beach stage. Concerts will take place Thursday 07th, Friday 08th and Saturday 09th July with the hottest South African bands of the moment. Sports events include the Vodacom Beach soccer and touch rugby; the volleyball tournament; beach basketball, East Coast Radio Soccer Clinic taking place daily from 13:00 to 16h30 and the Waveski contest.
