Represent is loving: Haute Cabriere

We love being South African.  So many different kinds of people, cultures, opinions and flavours, life is certainly not dull.  For example, you gotta love Cape Townians.  Many a dinner party conversation has ventured towards the mystical Mountain and beaches of the fairest Cape, the topics ranging from Khayelitsha to Claremont.  But one question that seems to always do the rounds is about the people.  What is it about Cape Townians that makes them so different from Joburgers?  What is it that differentiates us?  Why do we feel like such distant cousins?  Why do their houses seem better designed, their restaurants more sexy, their lifestyles more appealing, their fashion more edgy?  What is it that makes us so different? “Money”, ‘they’ would surely quip, referring to the fact that Jozi peeps actually work for a living and blerrie hard at that.  “Ambition”, we would reply, continuing our earnest struggle up the corporate ladder.  “Black Diamonds” a Capie would say referring to the annoying new label; “Black People” a cheeky Jozite would reply causing much spluttering and coughing.  We can and have spun the debate in many directions and sometimes it gets tiresome in its predictability, but today we’re not interested in fauna, flora, politics or wealth as a differentiator.  Today we’re going with WINE and we’re sticking to it.  Yip, you heard right, VINO, WINE, PLONK, WYN, TASSIES…. Hear us out. We only know about 4 or 5 Capies in Jozi and everytime we’re in their company, our lips are moistened by the most delicious of fermented grapes.  No graca, JC or Johannesburger for them, WINE is like a fine art form for a Cape Townian and as much as Joburgers covet freedom of expression, small business and BEE, Cape Townians worship their Wine.  Now obviously CT has a varied population and we’re stereo-typing here and some wine-worshipping is not so fortunate, but has anyone else noticed their general affinity for the good tipple in life?  “Some of our best friends are from Cape Town” and we will be forever grateful to them for sharing some of their hushhush WINE secrets with us.  The whole point of this article is to venerate the wonderful Cape creation that is HAUTE CABRIERE… Tasted it yet?  It’s been gracing a number of our little weekend shindigs in recent months and it’s delicious flavour and composition is unforgettable.  We love it so much we decided to look it up on the net and we found http://www.cabriere.co.za/ that confirms our argument above as they describe wine as “the mystical synergy between sun, soil, vine and man…” We can highly recommend the Chardonnay Pinot Noir, with it’s unmistakable touch of magical pink, it’s delicious with any meal...

Mo’nique gives Paris a FAT Chance

While we’re on the topic of new TV shows, and rather than focus on the dreary ‘real world’ on this balmy Mon morn’, let’s amuse ourselves with larger than life comedian and actress Mo’nique and her new reality show FAT CHANCE taking place in Paris. We love it. A bunch of buxom ladies get to hang out and just be their fabulous voluptuous selves with Mo’nique in the French capital, telling their backstories, sharing their lives and celebrating being plus sized .  Ultimately the ladies are competing for the title of “Miss F.A.T” , the show features them learning how to strut their booty with the goal of winning the “FAT” beauty pageant.  Nice change.   Mo’nique’s star continues to rise as her natural talent and exceptional goedspa see her diversifying into all kinds of ventures: “Mo’Nique has become a role model for voluptuous women everywhere, proving that you don’t have to be a size 0 to be sexy and fabulous.  Her musings on life are featured in the best-selling book entitled Skinny Women are Evil published by Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster. Released in April 2003, the book quickly became a New York Times bestseller.   She recently released with co-author Sherri McGee McCovey a follow-up called Skinny Cooks Can’t Be Trusted for Amistad Press, a division of HarperCollins. In addition to Mo’Nique’s F.A.T. Chance: Paris, Mo’Nique is currently hosting the VH1 hit Charm School.  Recently Mo’Nique’s stand up comedy special I Coulda Been Your Cellmate aired on Showtime Television. The special was also released on DVD by Salient Media.  Mo’Nique is currently shooting the feature film The Better Man opposite Martin Lawrence.  ” Check out the show here and search YouTube for clips from the last few...

Represent Ayeye! Calling all strippers

Die groot krokodil and all other conservatives of our gagged past must be spinning in their graves as freedom of speech and the right to choose how you live your life spreads as far as a reality stripping show on TV and on M-Net nogal.  Tannies country-wide (and lots of others) will be horrified.  Ingeniously, STRIPTEASE, will feature SA’s very own “wannabe Hugh Hefner”, Lolly Jackson, who alone will attract hordes of viewers wanting a close-up of this notorious player. The show kicks off in September but auditions start next week.  Ayeye!Positioned as “sensual” yet “classy” we do wonder what the trajectory of this show will be in a country where women’s rights and sexual violence and abuse is always top of mind.  We wait and see. New local reality show for M-Net’s actionX – Stripdance your way to the top Reality show fever is running high on DStv. Come August, M-Net will bring you Idols, Survivor SA: Malaysia and Big Brother Africa. Now M-Net’s actionX, channel 6 on DStv, also gets its own local reality show. Get ready for Stripteaze, a late-night, sensual yet classy reality show in which South Africa’s best male and female strippers will strut their stuff to get your vote. Stripteaze is actionX’s very first locally-produced programme and will be on air from 1 September on Saturdays at 23:00. “It’s a giant leap forward for actionX to produce local content and we trust that Stripteaze will attract a lot of viewers to our channel,” says Tracey Nissenbaum, actionX’s Head of Programming. “Up to now actionX has brimmed with action-packed, fast-paced international shows and movies geared at an “older” audience. Our first local reality show, Stripteaze, fits perfectly into this mix.”     Auditions for Stripteaze will start soon. The competition is open to anybody between 18 and 35 years of age and includes amateur and professional dancers. Stripteaze performances are theme based, and the performers will only strip down to their g-strings. Auditions will take place at Teazers branches across South Africa. Forty girls and twenty guys will be chosen from the audition phases to compete in the first round of the competition. Each week, viewers at home will then vote for their favourite performers via SMS. The male and female performers with the most votes will then advance to the next round, after which they will compete for a place in the finals. The winners will receive prizes to the value of R300 000. The winning Male Dancer will ride home on a Ducati motorcycle, while the best Female Dancer will get her booty into a brand new  sporty1.4 VW Golf. The viewers at home are the judges and only they will decide...

Represent Ayeye! Chris Brown Rihanna and Khanyi

Bit of goss’ for a Wednesday.  It’s spreading like wildfire through the US cyberspace, radio stations and broken telephone – Chris Brown and Khanyi Mbau aka “SA’s Paris Hilton” had a tiff and tustle at a recent TV show launch in SA and he may have a crush on her.  It appears Khanyi’s reputation proceeds her all the way to foreign shores – just check out all the US blog entries and celebrity sites – particularly as the story grows.  To complicate the issue, Rihanna is supposedly seeing her Umbrella co-star Chris and is naturally unhappy about the Khanyi stories. Watch the Umbrella remix video here. We think it’s inevitable that more and more people discover the appeal of Africa, Khanyi is just part of the manic crossover as Africa creeps into foreign worlds and reveals our extremely desirable side.  Mark our words it’s just going to get bigger as more and more people venture forth to explore.  It’s just a pity that some of our people insist on being dodgy and mis-representing. Check out this blog entry from “A Hot Mess” : Reports from South Africa say Chris Brown tried to scoop “Khanyisile Mbau“, apparently a hot 21-year old actress, while he was visiting the country. “I tried to pull away but his grip was just too tight,” Mbau reportedly said. “When Malcolm [X, my manager] pulled me away Chris asked if I was sure I did not want to come with him.” Chris Brown denied the story to City Press though and said “They are fooling you, man. There is no such thing. I only know Malcolm X, the hero.” Well, it sounds like either this chick is the Paris Hilton of South Africa or “The R&B Tupac” needs some macking lessons. See the story develop at Love From Laya blog featuring some pics of the accussed. We watch with interest. ...

AxeJet plane ready for take off

AxeJet plane ready for take off

Axejet has redeemed themselves here at Represent with a fabulous response and healthy debate around the campaign. Big Ups. Now we wish we were on the plane!  The line up for Ibiza is well-balanced to cater for a range of music tastes and represents the Best of Breed of local DJ’s as the first passengers.  We hope you’ve all entered and hold thumbs that you get to join in the bash.  We look forward to the rollout. AxeJet, the risqué new airline by Axe deodorant, has been cleared for take-off to the party capital of the world – Ibiza, Spain. The airline, in partnership with 5FM, Metro FM and The Sunday Times takes to the sky on Satruday 18 August. Well-known 5FM DJs: DJ Fresh and Roger Goode as well as Metro FM’s Thomas and DJ Fistaz and DJ Tira are confirmed as the first passengers. The AxeJet aircraft is currently being prepared for take-off at OR Tambo International Airport and is scheduled to make its first flight to the sunny shores of Ibiza for a week of sun, music and parties. The Boeing 727 will have the first ever Mile High Class with all the AxeJet luxury trimmings – as seen on television. Targeted at young men, AxeJet will combine male fantasy with air travel to provide luxuries as yet unheard of in the local market. Apart from sexy cabin attendants, cheekily dubbed “mostesses”, the service will also include racy in-flight entertainment with a variety of options like pillow fighting, spanking and mud wrestling. Tickets for the maiden flight are already reserved for a host of well-known South Africans and a handful of lucky Axe competition winners. Axe users will be required to purchase a can of Axe and SMS their unique barcode to 33975 to stand the chance to join the Mile High Class this August. A limited number of tickets will be available for sale through selected travel agent partners. More details will be made available in the Sunday Times, on 5FM and Metro FM and at www.axejet.co.za. Whereas AxeJet was executed purely as a marketing campaign in overseas markets like Germany, Australia and New Zealand, the South African venture will aim to make this fantasy airline a reality with trips to exotic locations. Axe Brand Manager, Shren Moodley says: “Ibiza was the obvious choice for our first destination, and who better to fly our top house DJs to the island than AxeJet? We know our DJs can shake up the party over there, just like we know AxeJet can seriously shake up the airline industry. Our new service is about making every guy’s fantasy a...
