Idols 2007 – how and where to enter

Yip – it’s another Idols and we’re looking forward to placing our bets.  Let’s hope that the judges choose singers who ‘stick’ or whose stars at least rise a little rather than fading miserably into obscurity within moments of taking the crown.  If I say Idols who do you think of? My first name is Zamajobe, then after a bit of thought Karen and of course Heinz… If I remember correctly, Zama was a runner up.  We’re still disappointed Gift didn’t bag it last time round 🙁 A lot of people we have spoken to about Idols worry that in the face of the mind-blowing talent illustrated on American Idols we may not compete.  We disagree, don’t you know music comes from Africa? We have the most amazing talent on this continent – now let’s find some more!  Go and sing your hearts out!  About that DSTV decoder… Here’s the info: This year it is easier than ever to enter M-Net’s glamorous singing competition and make your dreams come true! Here’s what prospective Idols have to know: No pre-registration: To make the process as easy as possible, there will be no entry forms this year. Contestants simply show up at any of the five audition venues (see below) and sing. Each contestant will be registered at the audition venue and be given a chance to audition. Age: To qualify, contestants have to be at least 16 and no older than 30 as of 22 June, 2007. That means if you turn 31 years old on 22 June, sorry – you’re too old! And if you only turn 16 on 23 June – try again next season! You will need to bring proof of age, such as an I.D. document or a birth certificate. (Sorry, driver’s license doesn’t count.) If you’re under 21, you have to be accompanied by your parent or legal guardian, who will have to sign permission forms. Or you could download the forms from http://www.mnet.co.za/ and have your guardian pre-sign it, then you can come alone. Clothing: It is typically very cold during Idols auditions (especially if you start queuing the night before!) so dress warmly. Dress as creatively as you wish, but remember that no amount of fancy-dress or revealing outfits will distract the judges’ attention from your voice! Singing: The judges want to hear you sing, so by all means bring your guitar if you want to amuse your new friends in the audition queue, but you will not be allowed to accompany yourself during the audition. Auditions: These are the audition dates and venues: Johannesburg: Standard Bank Arena, Saturday, 23 June. Cape Town: The River Club...

London 2012 Logo causing a blog stir

Londoner’s are not impressed with the 2012 Olympics logo.  And to be honest, nor are we – it’s pretty fugly.  Have a long look at it… what do you see? Stare long and hard now – can you make out anything?  It’s supposed to be a “powerful” and “modern” rendition of the letters 2012…. Reminds me of when I was in Std 3 trying to draw ‘cool’ graffiti style titles for my school projects.  Badly.  Just to check if we’re out of touch with logo design and branding trends, we asked one of the best designers we know to have a look and tell us his thoughts – he said, and we quote: “What is that? Jeez that’s crap.”  Your thoughts? Bloggers are venting their anger and confusion around the logo which looks to be a little too abstract for the everyday man. What will be interesting is what happens from here… if enough bloggers voice their opinion, will the public voice hold any weight? This is where blogging and the concept of citizen journalism gets interesting. The popular (and free) underground daily newspaper Metro gives us some of the Bloggers POV – read more here – good old British sense of humour! ‘OMG! The ‘London 2012′ logo makes me want to pluck out my eyes. And it’s going to be everywhere I work. I may die. Or kill. Or both.’ Reynolds, Twitter ‘I would say I’m left speechless but it’s more muttering and bashing my head against my keyboard… Fear not, should you not like pink though as it comes in a further variety of vomit inducing colours – yes, it’s a pick and choose wreck of a logo.’ www.diaryofawebsite.com ‘Despite the fact that if you squint it looks a bit like a couple engaging in an act of oral sex and despite the fact that one of the Londonist co-editors described it as a “joke”, I really like it. To those of you who agree with me – I fear we might be part of an oppressed minority for the next five years.’ Ben, londonist.com ‘The 2012 London Olympics logo looks like bad stone age art.’ dfl, Twitter ‘There were lots of good things about the 80s. Style was not one of them. And yet, this identity screams 1985 at me like a dodgy set of legwarmers.’...

See Rihanna & Amy prepping at MTV Movie Awards

There’s something distinctly voyeuristic about seeing an artist getting ready with the production crew in a quiet backstage area just before going onto stage with Jay-Z at the MTV Movie Awards- particularly if it’s Rihanna, the shiniest star on the pop scene, getting ready to perform her ella ella ella hitsong Umbrella.  You can watch Rihanna “shaking off her nerves” before her big performance with the Jiggaman on MTV’s site right here  – it’s a long video so let it load a while.  You even get to see a smiley Paris Hilton bopping along to the music – maybe this was before all the jibes and digs around her her impending (today?) jail sentence that she had to listen to from the various presenters including the harsh Sarah Silverman… And for all the Amy Winehouse fans (if you’re not over her already 🙂 ), there’s also a clip of an apparently tipsy Amy hanging backstage with her newly betrothed husband (of two weeks) Blake Fielder-Civil before performing a ‘smouldering rendition of “Rehab” ‘.  In the video she does look a bit shaky (doesn’t she always??) but they were definitely looking very in love and happy – which is a good thing considering the news that the performance was actually boo’ed by the audience (glad it doesn’t only happen at the SAMA’s) and they had a huge bust-up the next day or early morning at their hotel according to the dodgy Uk Mirror.  Not the smiliest of performers. In terms of celebrating the actors and who won the actual MTV Movie Awards – Barry Ronge would be horrified to hear that the THIRD Pirates of the Caribbean was the big winner, with Johnny Depp winning the Best Performance.  Mike Myers and Sasha Baron Cohen (aka Ali G) were also winners.  More from Hollywood Reporters...

Japan reveals first Robot child – CREEPY

I had to watch the YouTube Child robot “C2” video twice to believe that humans are that close to inventing robotic versions of themselves *shivers* – it’s a must see – but don’t watch it if you’re prone to Chucky nightmares.  Creepy indeed. Thanks to Aquoibon for the heads up…watch C2 here below. Freaky. Read all about it at http://www.japanprobe.com/?p=1877: A child-sized android with flexible joints and soft skin developed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency was unveiled Friday at Osaka University, where the agency’s research and development team is based. The 1.3-meter-tall, 33 kilogram humanoid robot has optical, auditory and tactile sensors. Fifty-one actuators inside its body run on compressed air and enable the robot to make complex movements smoothly. About 200 tactile sensors are embedded in the robot’s gray skin, which is made of silicon and other materials. The robot can react to its surroundings by blinking and altering its facial expressions. The robot, which has the physical ability of a 1- or 2-year-old toddler, can turn over and stand up with...

Pretoria…or is it Tshwane Comedy Festival

Winter means Theatre is the new Picnic and discounted block bookings mean you can take the whole gang and your basket.  For those looking for entertainment and *hopefully* a good laugh, make sure to book your seat for the upcoming jampacked Pretoria… or is it Tshwane Comedy Festival later this month at the State Theatre. Have a close look at the line up – we’re not taking them seriously as you know comedy requires that we laugh at ourselves – but the different genres are pretty literal – “Hardcore” clearly means leave your Aunty at home (unless she’s dirrrrttty like that), “Black”, we assume means lots of our 11 languages being gooi’ed and “Afrikaans” means just that – Afrikaans only – with “in” jokes. Gotta love this place.  So we’d advise you to either practice your fake “i get it” laugh and leg-slapping routine or take a very talented and patient multi-lingual friend with u… hard choice.  If you’re multi-lingual the Comedy Festival is your oyster.  We’ll hopefully go to loads and let you know who our favourites were! THE COMEDY FESTIVAL 19 – 30 June at 20.00 in the Rendezvous, State Theatre 19 June at 20.00 – Comedy Showcase Night Host: Chris Forrest Featuring: Hannes Brummer (pic), Roni Modimola – Tumi Morake – Magic Man 20 June at 20.00 – Comedy Showcase Night Host: Tshepo Mogale (pic) Featuring: Nina Hastie(pic) – Kedibone Muluadzi – Roni Modimola – Malcolm Ferreira (pic) 21 June at 20.00 – Hardcore Comedy Night Host: Loyiso Gola (pic) Featuring: Kyle Thorpe (pic) – Chris Forrest – Trevor Gumbi – Trevor Noah (pic) 22 June at 20.00 – Black Comedy Night Host: Eugene Khoza Featuring: Tumi Morake – Tshepo Mogale – Kedibone Muluadzi – Roni Modimola 23 June at 20.00 – Afrikaans Night Host: Melt Sieberhagen Featuring: Hannes Brummer – Denzel – Nicky van Niekerk – Joey Rasdien 26 June at 20.00 – Comedy Showcase Night Host: Chris Forrest Featuring: Nina Hastie – Trevor Noah – Eugene Khoza – Darren Maule 27 June at 20.00 – Afrikaans Night Host: Joey Rasdien Featuring: Nicky van Niekerk – Denzel – Pierre Breytenbach – Melt Sieberhagen 28 June at 20.00 – Black Comedy Night Host: Trevor Noah (pic) Featuring: Kedibone Muluadzi – Loyiso Gola (pic) – Dave Kibuuka – Kagiso Lediga (pic) 29 June at 20.00 – Hardcore Comedy Night Host: Mel Miller (pic) Featuring: Kyle Thorpe – Trevor Gumbi – Nqoba Ngcobo – Malcolm Ferreira 30 June at 20.00 – Comedy Showcase Night Host: Tshepo Mogale Featuring: Mike – Magic Man – Roni Modimola – Mel Miller Tickets: R70 throughout Discount: 10% on block booking of 10+ tickets Book at...
