Regardez les photos de Johannesburg!
ALLEZ-Y! See this amazing photo-story of Johannesburg city from photographer Richard Dobson for French magazine GEO right here. Entitled “The New Barons of Johannesburg” the photographer captures the inner-city dwellers from the roughest of the rough buildings with the poorest of the poor squatters through to the most blinging penthouse apartments of the Bridge Precinct with landlords relaxing in their free-standing bath. Makes you think… doesn’t it. Check out the RED ANTS in action – it’s not just a figment of the inner city imagination: Hope you can read French ‘coz the explanations are all in Francais but the photo’s tell it pretty much like it is anyway. Richard Dobson apparently works for GEO but spent some of his life in South Africa. We found out a bit about him through the publishing company Struik’s website: Richard Dobson Richard Dobson was born in Yorkshire in 1963 and educated in South Africa between 1975 and 1983. His passion for photography began in London in 1984, when a wander through the autumn forest of Hampstead Heath with a roll of fujichrome in his camera produced crisp, saturated slides that got him hooked. Four years assisting London advertising photographers provided the experience needed to step out into the world of professional photography. He now divides his time between Cape Town and Paris, shooting advertising and editorial photography. Clients include German and French GEO, Conde Nast Traveler, The New York Times, Vietnam Airlines, Nokia and Jeep. Enjoy! Merci a Boubou for the...

CreatingX- Leading the Deconstruction
“Creatives” make sure to check out the online creative community called CreatingX – they’re also behind the Joburg-based DECONSTRUCTION parties – there’s one taking place this Friday click on the flyer for more info – Malcolm Che tells us a little about CreatingX and the party below: Malcolm: CreatingX: the democratisation of creativity, through a social network, where the only people capitalising on ideas, are those who had them in the first place. CreatingX is a community that you can join, not just any community… it’s for the square pegs tired of round ‘holes… um, creatives in other words… think of it as a country-wide creative community. But just what does that offer you? at this point, there are a number of cool parties going on, and you’ll learn about them on the site… cool parties and cool bands doing cool stuff that when you get to, you’ll start taking the network from virtual into reality… cheesy line, but cool concept… we have blogs. cool blogs to read and write, and as a registered member, you can document your life and times for the rest of the country to enjoy… and then comment on if they so desire… which brings us to the forums. and while the cut forum is active with numerous comments, there are still huge gaps to be filled. why not set yourself up as an active member, and share your comments with the rest of us… then there’s the media gallery… this is just another component where you can showcase your creative genius for the rest of us. similarly, why not create your own ahem, X-site, where you can create your own personal piece of the internet. dare i say, it’s a little like myspace, but with a whole lot more… see, cos you can make connections with people you like by going to their profiles, and once you’ve done that, you’ll notice something interesting when you visit other members’ profiles… you’ll see how many degrees of seperation there are between you and that person, and then request connections through the line of linking… and man, are there a lot of people already worth connecting to… and more to follow… i’m not going to bore you with more details. But i recommend you check all of the links in the menu and find out more about the site… you can always send me a message, or better yet, post a question in the forums for more info… Represent: And what about the party? What kind of peeps are you hoping to draw? We see Miss Yucki is there so we’re sure it’s going to be...

Want to be a good writer? Listen to Orwell.
If you believe that you can never stop learning and like to get ideas and direction from the experts every now and then to keep you moving on up, then take a moment to read this article from George Orwell on how to be an effective writer. It’s from an inspirational website called “Pick The Brain”.In today’s world of constant communication: email’s, reports, citizen journalism, increased viral marketing etc we all could do with a reminder of how to write better. We certainly know a number of journalists who could heed his advice! Pass it on! The article is titled : George Orwell’s 5 rules for Effective Writing and you can read the entire article here which we recommend. In summary the rules are: Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. Never use a long word where a short one will do. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. Never use the passive where you can use the active. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous. For all the academics and intellects or those in need of a reminder of your word-filled tertiary days – we recommend that you read the entire ORIGINAL article here! Enjoy! AxeJet – a playboy mansion in the sky?
I love a campaign that starts off with teasers, like this new campaign for the cheeky AXE brand. I always leave the Sunday Times travel section for a Tuesday or Wednesday read and hence today on this fake Sunday aka Human Rights day morning, I decided to pick up the paper and see what exotic destinations are going for a bargain. And then I spotted the Axe advertisement. It’s on page 14 and pictures a luxurious first class area in a plane with gorgeous air hostesses offering drinks, massage and pampering in a jacuzzi. The byline is “Coming soon… An airline that goes all the way.” http://www.axejet.co.za/ So obviously we popped on over to the site. Any campaign that offers an outsider’s chance at free travel never mind luxurious first class, is a campaign for us – we believe firmly in the “if you’re not in you can’t win” mentality. At the moment all you can do is give them your details. You then receive an email that says “welcome player” thanks you for signing up and tells you that you will find out as soon as the new website launches. Let’s hope this teaser does not let us down and becomes another boring datacollection exercise… advertisers you know who you are. Now we can’t imagine that this deodorant brand has actually started an airline – particularly a luxurious one. Our guess is that its an online campaign like a lot of recent campaigns that offers a ’round the world flight with 10 of your friends’ or ‘a playboy mansion in the skies’ or ‘a luxurious first class flight to Sweden’ or something like that. But it’s clearly more targetted at boys (and I use “boys” with meaning.) Oh well, guess we’ll find out soon. For now, SIGN UP with Inge...
