Urban Chick with a short story to tell?
Sharpile to Alexia for the heads up. If you’re an Urban Chick and you’d like to write a short story and have it posted on a short story blog then ‘Urban Chick: A Users Guide’ is for you. We’re not that clear on why they are gathering all the stories – if there will be any payment for the published stories or if they will be published in book form along the lines of Tertia Albertyn blog that became a book and is now up for a Blooker award. But the PR says the site will ‘showcase’ the stories which we assume means they will simply publish the best on the blog for all to read. The good thing is you can pick up tips and get some guidance on HOW to write a good short story which could be very helpful. We’ll try find out more but in the meantime get writing – it’s great inspiration! Urban Chick. Friday night. The bar is filled with smart, sexy, sussed women fresh from a week hard at work. Their stories are told with candour and humour. IMAGINI – Visual DNA of your personalit-ay!
Thanks to Aquoibon for this lead… IMAGINI – it’s a really cool social networking site that defines the kind of personality you have based on what visuals you choose … It’s frighteningly accurate and gave us one of the most on point summaries of how we flow. I remember a few years ago we did a similar test on another personality reading site and it was not half as accurate as this one… Goes to show just how impactful visuals are over words on defining what you do and don’t like. You can also see how you fare against the average joe around the world. Give it a bash it takes a few moments of pretty picture picking and then the site sums up your personality. Here are some excerpts from our “reading” – we fall into the category “SOFISTICAT”:”ESCAPE ARTIST” “HIGH TIME ROLLER” and “LOVE BUG” ….. give it a bash and tell us what you think!!! Click here to go there… ON MOOD: “The kick of the city appeals to you like nothing else – it makes you feel alive. you see beauty in the most inhospitable environments. You are street smart and quite self-assured. When it comes to art you appreciate raw and edgy stuff – you like to be challenged. You are definitely open-minded and you favour direct communication….” ON FUN: “You like simple pleasures – sometimes there’s nothing more relaxing. You really value your quiet time. For kicks you like to indulge in your great passions. You are probably happy spending time alone and your drive and curiosity will take you all over the world. When it comes to holidays you see them as the perfet chance to further yourself – to learn more about the wolrd around you. You like to be immersed in a completely different world…” FOR HABITS: “You probably like to get dressed up, go out and be seen! As for the home you have very cool and contemporary taste. It’s not just about function, your environment has to be as stylish as you are” (we’re loving that!) FOR LOVE: “You try to show your feelings in simple ways everyday. Your heart is right on your sleeve. When you think of freedom – nature takes over. Getting back, out into the wilderness is a big draw.”...

Dede, Nana and Dan have been holding it down for the viewers of Idols West Africa, in fact, if I may say so, I have found the judging trio more entertaining than the contestants themselves at times, especially Dede! And now it’s that time when you can vote for your favourites… How? It’s easy. Tune in to M-Net or AfricaMagic every Sunday. Bunny Chow is finally here!
Guys peep this… After we heard about the movie middle of last year we thought it would never arrive but it seems the long awaited Bunny Chow movie is finally here! Well actually it opens in SA on Friday 09 March 2007. Bunny Chow follows the raucous and often ridiculous weekend journey of three black comedians and Cope (Jason Cope), a strange and irritating white guy who latches onto this testosterone fuelled posse. Egos run high and careers are at stake as Kags (Kagiso Lediga) an arrogant womaniser, Yusuf (Joey Rasdien) a devout yet conflicted Muslim and Dave (David Kibuuka) a somewhat innocent and naive Ugandan immigrant with aspirations of making it big embark on a roadtrip to Oppikoppi, South Africa’s biggest annual rock festival. The quartet slip out of their normal lives for a few dusty and increasingly absurd days with hopes of mass debauchery, drugs, rampant sex, true love and conquering the rock stages with their comedy but they get a bit more than they bargained for. Dave has one thing going for him, his car. Kagi and Yusuf (established comedians) need a ride to Oppikoppi (three hours out of Johannesburg) where there will be a stand up comedy stage. Dave overhears them complaining about having to take their cars to the dust bowl, that is Rustenburg in winter and offers them a ride. Kagiso and Yusuf leave for Oppikoppi against the wishes of their long suffering girlfriends who suspect they are just going to the festival to get wild and fornicate with other girls. Their journey is filled with mishaps and funny moments of adventure as they travel through Soweto to buy beer and wors, Kagi is booked to perform and alleviate predominantly white farmers stress from the imminent drought, they stop on the side of the road to relieve themselves and leave Cope on the side of the road and there is even a bit of a twisted love story where Dave falls madly in love with Carla (The Marketing Manager of the festival) a Jewish princess type. The film directed by John Barker and produced by Barker, Kagiso Lediga and Leanne Callanan explores the different characters’ relationships with each other set against a gritty urban Johannesburg and it also tests the agility of relations formed by people from different religions and ethnic groups living and surviving together in a contemporary reality. The controlling idea of the film is about relationships be it friends or lovers, ultimately you choose! Click here to check out the...
BBC launches new Africa Beyond website
Tuesday 06 March 2007 saw the launch of the new BBC website Africa Beyond celebrating African arts in the UK. Africa Beyond casts its net right across the African continent to illustrate the diverse and complex cultures of the 54 African nations and the Diaspora – in cinema, television, photography, literature, music, architecture, visual art, history, craft, design, performing arts, workshops and debate. The website will be a hub for information, discussion and exploration of African arts, beyond the geographical borders of the continent, and beyond any preconceptions about Africa and its culture. The new site brings under its wing the BBC’s existing music website Africa on your Street, with its interviews, features and CD reviews covering everything from Afrobeat to Hiplife to Mbalax, plus gig listings from across the UK. Coinciding with Ghana’s 50th year of independence there will be a special focus on Ghana’s impact on the UK arts scene over the past 50 years. DJ and music promoter Rita Ray kicks off the new website with her preview of Ghana-related events this year. There’s an interview with playwright Ama Ata Aidoo whose classic play Dilemma of a Ghost will be revived in London later in the year. You can browse a photo gallery of Max Milligan’s extraordinary images of Ghana and read about innovative Ghanaian company Theatre for Change. Coming soon will be features on Ghana’s up-and-coming new writers, and more Ghanaian music from old-style highlife to reggae to hiplife. Africa Beyond carries on the BBC’s African web coverage where the Africa 05 festival left off. Africa 05 left its mark with many high profile events such as Africa Remix at the South Bank, Back to Black at the Whitechapel Gallery and Africa Live at the British Museum, and even incorporating commercial partners such as Time Out, Starbucks and Borders and Books Etc. The Africa Beyond programme will also include live events, including the Word from Africa festival, a week long celebration of African languages which launches on 02 June 2007 with an event at the British Museum featuring musicians, poets and storytellers in the galleries and theatre halls. Further events will be happening in African restaurants around London. Africa Beyond is supported by the BBC and Arts Council with other core partners including inIVA (Institute for International Visual Arts), the British Museum and South Bank...
