You’ll remember that last year we encouraged all local musos to put themselves forward for the Splashy Fen music festival… well the names have been drawn, the teepees are being erected, the crops have been ploughed and the Drakensburg valley is getting ready to rumble. If you are a HIPPY, if you love CAMPING, if you love feeling HAZY, if you love …great MUSIC, if you love the OUTDOORS, if you love meeting people from all over the country… then this festival is for you. If you KWAITO or HIPHOP, I wouldn’t recommend it. Neat and tidy it is not, but fun and crazy it most certainly is. Tickets for Splashy Fen Music Festival in Underberg 13 – 17 April are flying out of selling points at a record rate and indications are that this year’s gathering will set new levels of attendance. Top Sounds Some of the alternative/indie groups from Cape Town, Jozi and other far-flung quarters will perhaps be unfamiliar to Durban gig-goers but they were chosen not only because they pull big crowds in their home towns but also on account of the fact that they’re really HOT – these are the outfits that everyone will be soon be talking about everywhere! Of the main-stage household names, Prime Circle are currently generating a high profile among CD-buyers thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign for their recently released album, while Polisiekar (censored) have been cultivating their ‘bad boys’ image via on-and off-stage antics with accompanying media frenzy. Music lovers whose memories can be measured in decades have made gigs by The Song Riders among Durban’s most well-attended events and their line-up for Splashy 06 so far includes Ken E Henson, Roger Lucey, Wendy Oldfield, Dan Chiorboli and Douglas Bean. The much-anticipated Blunt Magazine evening is yet another peak focal point of the moment. SA Fashion Week workshops – doing their bit
It’s awesome to find out that this years SA Fashion Week again has a social responsibility angle to it (it’s been going for a few years) – Bravo guys. The problem all too often with fashion in SA is that it tends to be perceived and in reality reserved for the privileged few… Many a fashion event that we have attended has had a snotty air permeating the crowd, leaving one feeling badly …dressed and clearly not in the inner circle. Exclusive… This has to change and it sounds like it is! SA Fashion Week is from the 27 – 30 July 2006. Here are two interesting projects on the go…. Since March 16 and up until April 26, this years fashion week is rolling out a country-wide bunch of workshops bringing high-level designers like Stoned Cherrie, Craig Native, Sun Goddess, Marion & Lindie, Ephymol, Holmes Brothers and Black Coffee together with local designers and crafters ” to foster a much closer relationship between crafts and design from the grassroots level… in an effort to build sustainable regional fashion and craft fusion hubs.” CLICK HERE FOR ALL THE INFORMATION And to celebrate a decade of South African Fashion Week (SAFW), teams of established fashion designers will join forces with some 27 up and coming designers, three from every province. In addition up to 25 crafters in the provinces will assemble for the workshops. In total some 252 individuals will create new and unique designer collections that will be exhibited and sold at the 2006 SAFW, with nine of the selected designers undertaking to stock products in their boutiques for a period of one year. The vision of the program is to nurture an appreciation of local fashion in the minds of the South African consumer and strengthen international interest in South African fashion. It also aims to highlight the creativity and diversity of South African designers and crafters and to develop the growth and business potential of the industry. SWAZI TIMES – Dagga man arrests himself
Yet again a classic article from Swaziland – thanks to NCIFI for sending it in: MANZINI – An elderly man who jumped into a police van thinking they were offering him a lift was stunned when he was driven to the police station and arrested for illegal dagga possession. Simon Vilakati of Mhlangatane believes that the dagga may have been planted… in one of his bags during the trip because one of the bags was on the front seat with the police officers while he had the other one. Appearing before Principal Magistrate Selby Gama, Vilakati told the court that he is still shocked at how he got behind bars. Walking “I was walking when I noticed the van following me, then all of a sudden the police stopped at the bus stop and two women hopped in. I was also told to hop in and I did, even though I did not know where we were going,” he said. He revealed that the trip was destined for Mhlangatane Police Station and later the Mankayane Police Station. Brutality Magistrate Gama asked the man how he could jump into a police van without even asking where he was going, to which he replied he was too scared to ask fearing police brutality if he dared question their instruction. This statement angered Magistrate Gama who warned the suspect and everyone in the courtroom against taking advantage of reports that police are accused of beating up some suspects and start making unfounded statements, hoping they will be believed. Feel like hanging with Jozi’s celebs?
Yes, there are affordable and easy-to-access places where you, our treasured reader, can hang out and check out your favourite celebs… This ain’t Hollywood darl and we don’t have The Ivy … yet. Well it depends on the kind of celeb you’re looking to meet. If it’s an SABC TV actor or radio star you have two main options. First is to simply go to the source… to the SABC b…uilding! You don’t need to be invited to go in there, you just have to find a parking (often a challenge unless you’re willing to pay) and stroll in casually to either Radio or TV park. Radio park you’re obviously more likely to come across Metro FM and 5FM radio jocks hanging out at the canteen in serious looking meetings. Or if you’re a real fan you can actually watch them “live on radio” through the glass booth… remember to wipe any drool off the window. If it’s TV celebs you want then you need to make sure you hang out in the TV building… there’s a canteen there too. You’ll be amazed at who goes riding up and down those escalators in the foyer. Then of course if you like to play a little more hard-to-get, you need to head off to our favourite suburb in Jozi, the one and only Melville. One sure-fire spot for a bit of TV celeb-spotting is Spiro’s on the corner of 2nd and 7th – the favourite hangout of many a TV person – stars and wannabe’s. Spiro’s also serves good food incidentally and is affordable too! Otherwise just keep moving from cosy restaurant to cosy restaurant and you will be bound to spot at least a few Isidingo stars. Then there’s musicians and our favourite radio station Y-FM…. well, if you want to hang out with famous musicians you have two choices too. Just go to any major gig at the Bassline or in Newtown in general and they’ll be there. You see, that’s the cool thing with Jozi musicians, they like to be real and hang out with the real people supporting their colleagues and competition. Tres down-to-earth. Otherwise, if you prefer a more sit-down environment, you need to head to the restaurant in this photo… yip, PRIMI PIATTI in The Zone in Rosebank. Primi’s is amazing. At literally anytime of the day you can spot a famous musician or at least a YFM DJ… (YFM is round the corner) having lunch, coffee and sometimes even drinks in Primi lounge (that mysterious room at the back.)
