Ah how we miss those late 90’s Friday night Jazz sessions at the BAT centre in Durbs… Vukani remember those??? It’s the perfect place to relax and watch the sunset, watch the ships coming and going and soak in the Durban air. THe last time we were there was a young Jazz band from the University of Natal Jazz school – wow they were awesome and the beers were cold and the food from TransAfricaEx…press (i think that’s the name) was delicious. Starting on the 15 March there is a fascinating exhibition entitled Amagugu VII – Treasures Exhibition which features amazing traditional beadwork from hidden tribes and unexplored areas around the country… there is trippy beadwork from the 60’s and 70’s – see this hat in the picture… well worth a visit to celebrate our cultural heritage. Here’s the PR: The exhibit is from Wednesday 15 – 25 March 2006. It will be opened by Yvonne Winters, Senior Museologist, Campbell Collections of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Yvonne Winters will give a talk on the Amagugu VII – Treasures exhibition at 12 noon Saturday 18th March 2006 for The Friends of the Durban Art Gallery and general public – all are welcome. Russian’s full? No worries – Afrika is calling your name!

Don’t despair if you can’t get tickets to the Russian Ballet ‘SWAN LAKE’ because it’s sold out already, the gorgeous dancers from Ballet Theatre Afrikan are on at the Market Theatre in Newtown and then later this month at SPIER in the Cape. Based on the wonderful stories of Rudyard Kipling and featuring the incredibleONG legs of Thoriso, the breathe-taking choreography of Martin Schýnberg, Thoriso and Christopher Kindo never-mind the lithe agile talent of the extraodinary BTA dancers, we highly recommend that you catch this show. Is it obvious that we’re fans? “…when the moon gets up and night comes, he is the Cat that walks by himself…waving his wild tail and walking by his wild lone.”R. Kipling On its 10th Anniversary, Ballet Theatre Afrikan makes its mark as a creative, classically based dance company producing unique and indigenous works. Artistic Director Martin Schýnberg produces and directs Rudyard Kipling’s beloved “Just So Stories” in a collaborative and colourful production with an original score. “Just So…The cat that walked through Kipling”, is a cat’s walk through the thought-provoking Kipling fables, weaving the themes of evolution and domestication of the planet throughout the ballet. One of South Africa’s leading jazz pianists and composers, classically-trained Wessel van Rensburg has created an inspired score, drawing on his love of fantasy and skill for improvisation. Consummate percussionist Magda de Vries will be part of the musical quartet playing live, and actress and singer Dominique Paccaut will narrate and link the thread between each tale. With stories as diverse as “How the leopard got his spots”, “How the rhinoceros got his skin” and “The cat that walked by himself”, three contrasting choreographers will interpret the fables, ensuring a wide range of dance styles: Chris Kindo, Martin Schýnberg and Thoriso Magongwa evoke interest with their diverse choreographic vocabularies. The production will appeal to both young and old and will premiere at the Market Theatre on 25 February and tour extensively including the Spier Festival from 30 March – 1 April and the Gauteng area. “Just So…The cat that walked through Kipling” will provoke thought, entice visually and beguile spectators with exhilarating entertainment… Don’t miss it!...
